Sapphire listened intently. were things really that bad on land? she had never been to see for herself. the thought once again came that she should show herself. after all, this human seemed nice enough and he did say he wanted to find merpeople. but at the sea serpent's comment about humans taking things of beauty to replace things that were ugly, she decieded to wait and see how he would respond.

Nissa listened with curiosity, astonished the humans would live in such an environment. Was nothing done to change it? Their young must die often if humans enjoyed killing and the air was so polluted. If one went close enough to shore, the air turned positively revolting.
Softly, Nissa murmured, "It is not surprising, then, that those of your number seek to take what is of the ocean back to your world. It is a common desire to replace a thing of little value with that of beauty."

Iris drifted away from the mermaid as her wish came into effect and she started getting teary-eyed over another female mermaid, most likely her mother by the sound of the wish. Sentimentality wasn't really her thing, perhaps because she never grew up with siblings or her true parents. Either way, Iris deemed it was time for her to depart. The two mermaids would most likely be too thrilled to see each other to notice her, so she simply dove under the water and swam away.
The sound of an underwater propeller caught her attention and Iris found a rather large boat blocking her way, a thing of curiosity given the face not many boats ventured this far away from the usual trade routes. Fishing, perhaps? She didn't see any nets. Iris paused in the water, gazing up with curiosity.

Leija rested hr arms against the rail of her uncle's boat, the Delfina, painted white with a stripe of navy blue. The salty ocean air whipped her dye-faded hair this way and that like purple dying blades of grass in a hurricane. ' Leija' She peered out at the waves as they rose and fell on the surface of the water, mesmerized by the constant yet ever changing motions that tipped the Delfina back and forth, back and forth, over and over again. " Leija" The shriek of the wind against her ears, the crash of one saltwater peak against another before they collapsed together into foam, it was as if the ocean was calling to her through the unspoken language of water and air. " LEIJA!" She finally turned around as one of her cousins, Aaron, yelled her name for the tenth time that day. " Ah-! Y-yes?!" He didn't have to answer, for she had already begun walking into the boat's part-rec room part-kitchen and sat down for lunch. Together with her cousins and Uncle, she sat and quietly listened as the others discussed the day's haul and when they would next return to port. She found her gaze drifting back out the window as she bit into her sandwich and chewed.
