For many, many years, mermaids have dominated the folklore of the sea. Beautiful maidens with long flowing hair and multicolored tails captivated the eye of man. The large variety of other sea creatures that roam the ocean seem to often escape the attention of the surface dwellers. All the better, as secrecy is key in dark times like these. As technology becomes more advanced, scientists invent new ways to track down the long-sought after myths and legends. Now, life under the sea will never be the same. You, as a part of this underwater society, must learn to avoid the deadly lures and traps of the surface-dwelling scientist. If they catch you, there's no telling what experiments they may run on you...
The Scientists
Their job is to try to track down mythical sea creatures, researching new ways to find them and collect data on them. Some scientists are more ambitious than others. Some scientists are gentle, and only wish to observe the sea creatures from a distance, while others are cruel and don't care if the sea creatures get hurt in the process. I don't want a surplus of scientists, but that shouldn't be a major problem considering most people will want to be the sea creatures.
The Sailors
The job of a sailor may vary--some are out there to fish, some are out there simply because they prefer the company of fish to people. No matter why they are there, sailors often take boats out to sea. They're often responsible for sighting strange marine life. If there is a mermaid, or a sea serpent roaming the ocean, they'll most likely be the first to know about it. They're usually adept at navigating in ships.

The Mermaids/Mermen
A description is hardly required here; mermaids (and mermen) are very beautiful/handsome people who look very much human except for their gills and tails. They can have pretty much any hair or eye color, so knock yourself out with that stuff.
The Selkies
Selkies are much like mermaids, looking somewhat humanoid; however, rather than being part fish, they are part seal. Hair color is more limited among Selkies, usually only having Human hair colors, but eye colors can be just as various as mermaid eye colors.
Sea Serpents
Sometimes referred to as the dragons of the sea, Sea Serpents are gigantic, sentient, ocean-dwelling snakes. Most are solitary, and don't socialize well. They speak in a majestic and ancient tongue not understood by most, but will often also live long enough to learn several other languages, considering they can live to be around 1000 years old. (I don't want a surplus of these either, considering they would be very powerful)

The Atlantians
The Atlantians are the only sea creatures able to walk on land, seeing that they look exactly like humans except for their gills, webbed hands and feet, and sometimes odd hair and eye coloring. Rarely, they will have blue or green skin, making them look even more alien. However, usually their skin is a rather average and less suspicious skin color.
The Sirens
Sirens can be part human part fish (mermaid) or part human part bird. They sing and hypnotize sailors to jump out of their boats to them, drowning them in the process. Sirens are exceptionally beautiful, and very skillful musicians.
The Echidna
The Echidna are a race of half-humans, half-snake. Females are most common, but males are not unheard of. Often, they roam the sea, and are referred to as the mothers of monsters. The most powerful among them can call upon great sea-monsters to do their bidding, and this makes them formidable creatures whom you would not wish to anger. I do not want a surplus of Echidna, but feel free to make one if there aren't already too many.

(PM me if you have an idea for another sea race!)
Roleplay Rules (Sorry, I know you must be sick of them by now.)
1.) Tess's rules apply.
2.) No cussing. No exceptions.
3.) No mary-gary sues, powerplay, godmode, etc...
4.) If you don't give us a picture of your OC, fine, but at least give us a brief description so that we have some idea of what they look like
5.) You may only be a race if it is on the list. Hybrids are allowed, but I don't want too many of them, and try to keep it simple. (ie: No humans with a mermaid for a mother, a sea serpent for an uncle, and a Selkie for a cousin. I encourage imagination, but that's a little crazy even for me)
6.) Try to keep genders even, thanks.
7.) ROMANCE IS ENCOURAGED! I wanna see drama.
8.) On a related note, fade to black at inappropriate scenes, please.
9.) No double-posts please.
EDIT: 10.) You are now required to keep genders even - thank you!
