One of the staff members made her life worst by beating her up, giving her disgusting food, and threaten to kill her if she ever tell anyone about his abuse. Then one day, the man caught Rena stealing some food she wasn't suppose to eat. Her punishment; having her left arm and right foot chop off and claw her left eye with claws from a declawed cat. But that where he made a mistake when two other staff members caught him for his shocking and bloody action so they fired him and tend Rena's wounds. They gave her an eyepatch made out of cloth and replaced her missing parts with robotic parts before they send her to live on her own with provided supplies to survive. That is where the apocalypse started when Rena found an abandoned restaurant filled with food.

The science behind this is that the condensation in the material drops to sub-zero temperatures so rapidly that the surface spontaneously freezes. The science behind how Raiden is able to do this is still mysterious.
