Akinale pushed herself back through the window, pausing momentarily before stepping onto the old wooden floor. The room was lit, as she had left it, but a thick letter rested gently on the end of her bed and, in noticing the seal, she rushed to grab it. Her toes hooked on the window frame, and she tumbled out into her bed, snatched the letter, flew off the other side, and read the letter with her head about an inch away from a nail popping out from the wall.
The seal, decorated with a leaf and a raven, was that of her uncle. The letters always appeared out of thin air, her parents not putting them there because they hated the old man, and they were most certainly packed to the brim with his adventures. It could be from anywhere on the planet, and she couldn't wait to shove herself into another of his stories.
A loud laugh jumped through the house, filling the air vents with the loud cackling of her father. "Good, he's with company." She sat on her bed, grabbing a few pillows and laying them in front of her, resting her head on them. The letter began, as usual: illustrating the important points of his traveling, the people he met, the places he went.
The letter finished off talking of mermaids, demons, and angels. Holding the letter to her chest, Akinale fell asleep against the soft pillows and silk sheets. She woke only to the sound of footsteps, her mother and father making their way, finally, to bed. And she made her way back into the warmth of sinister, senseless, sleep.
