There was a sudden roar of clapping and cheering in the terraces below. The name of the winning thoroughbreds flashed across the massive screen that overlooked the stadium, the silver logo of UGR shining in the corner of the display, discreet but clearly present. From her shaded balcony, behind the flowerless wisteria, Edel Mardavet had won with the cheering a small sum of money, thanks to the unexpected hight one of the racing creature's names had taken on that gleaming list. She'd have to thank the old family friend with which she'd discussed earlier, an enthusiastic old man who'd politely helped her analyze which horse she ought to place her bets on. He'd probably have much to tell her now that they'd have to bet anew.
A small summer breeze was lifted as she got out of her seat. The young woman's hat, respectful of the zephyr's request, had its long elegant rim flutter like a wing. The dress' rigid fabric however did nothing but let the vibration slide off of its dark mauve surface. The Mardavet daughter slowly moved back towards the inner terrace, swimming past the women's colorful lily pads of fabric and the men's designer suits which clumped together to form small groups of two or three and swayed around in unison. She placed her long-necked glass of champaign on a platter that passed under her hand and glided onwards. The pleasant hum of cocktail parties stood on the air, feeling very much at home on this white terrace strewn with delicate people. The names of the ones who'd possibly, hopefully, maybe arrive or hadn't arrived yet floated from left go right: the Sourbiers, the Karalino couple, the Nightingale family, the four Schwartz siblings... Very few words pertaining to any horse race could be heard amongst the lull, especially on the terrace itself, as any who'd come to watch the horses run had fled the ignorant crowd to rejoin their comrade equine enthusiasts by the 1st class area's betting screen. These races may have had their own specific set of activities or have allowed creativity itself to sometimes flourish in the form of intricate hats on the ladies' heads, they remained after all like any other social event and functioned much in the same way.

If you listen closely you can hear me cringing at all the purple prose I wrote on this green hellscape of a website circa 2011-2014.
