Raven padded out of her dark, musty den and into the sunlight. She hated lying around in that den, she'd much rather be out hunting, or even cave guarding, something. "Hey Raven!" Called Boulder, "Do you want to come on a walk with me?" "Yes but... aren't you on cave duty?" "Wren said he would take my place for a while, but I understand if you don't..." "No, no, it's fine. Let's go!" As she turned to walk past the camp entrance, she could have sworn she saw Wren wink at Boulder, as if egging him on about something...

Raven ran ahead and yelled for Boulder to catch up, "Come on you slow poke, are you telling me a strong cave guarder like you can't beat a skinny ol' she-cat like me?" she taunted. "Oh no, I wouldn't dare try." And with that, he sped up and past her. "Oh no you didn't!" She called, laughing, and she sped forward.

When she finally caught up with him he was sitting down near a big rock, grooming himself. "So what were you saying back there?" he laughed. Out of breath she puffed sarcastically, "How wonderful and great you were, even though no one could be greater than the great Raven!" "Whatever." he smiled. Raven jumped down laughing and they tumbled into a wide patch of grass. "I'm glad we're friends." he crooned. "But I'd like to be more than friends. " She jumped up, "I, I, I..." "I'm sorry, I understand." and he ran away.

Boulder's pelt burned as he dashed away from Raven. All those subtle hints she'd been giving him were purely his own, hopeful imagination. How could I make such an obvious mistake!?! He raced through the trees to a spot where he could be alone, a gurgling brook that smelt of pine and moss, and decomposing leaves. No other cats had ever been there before, as far as he knew. He made his way over to a rock and climbed on top of it, trying to sort out what he should do next. I could avoid her he told himself. Yes, minnow-brain. Avoid the most important cat in the clan. After some consideration, he came to a decision. I'll apologize, he reasoned.Friends are better than nothing. And with that, he stood up on the rock, stretched his worn-out muscles, and bounded silently back to the circle of willow trees that was their home.

Raven's heart screamed as she saw poor Boulder's hurt face. She'd broken him, and she could never forgive herself. She padded alongside the river and threw herself onto the bank. She thought long and hard about what she'd say to him when she next saw him.Would he be mad at her? Had she made an enemy forever? Her heart lurched at the thought of one of her own clanmates hating her.

Raven pushed those thought's out of her head when she heard the scream. Out in the middle of the river, a small body thrashed on a piece of log, mewling in terror. Raven's worst fears were acknowledged as she realized that it was kitten, and it couldn't go on for much longer, if she didn't do something.

There was no time for fear. Raven dove into the river and the water engulfed her in one icy swallow. Her paws moved swiftly as she pushed her way to the surface. She gasped for air and spun in the current. The kitten was farther downstream, it was thrashing, it's efforts only exerting in exhaustion. Raven lunged forward and sped through the water paddling with her front paws, now in desperation to save this poor kit. Right before her eyes, the kit only a few tail-lengths away, the wood banged into a rock, and snapped in two.

The kitten was engulfed in the waves and dragged under. "No!!!" she screamed. She searched the water, her eyes stinging, as a soft figure passed by her flank. She couldn't loose it this time, and she whipped around as she could in the water, and caught the kit in her jaws. Swimming to the surface she could already feel the warmth seeping away from the kits body, had her efforts been pointless? Would this kit survive?

With her last bit of strength she pulled herself onto the bank and curled herself around the poor mite, trying to keep it warm, though her eyes full of dirt and mud from the river, slowly closed shut...

"Raven!" Boulder yowled. What was she doing?!? Was she even alive? He raced towards the black bundle of wet fur, heart pounding in his chest. She has to be ok. She has to be ok! he repeated the phrase over and over, as if that would somehow make it true. His tail flicked anxiously, and he sat down beside her shivering frame, unsure of what to do. He was on the verge of running for help, but something held him, rooted to the spot at which he sat. She's so beautiful

Jay looked at the roof of the cave from her small nest. She stood up and shook her pelt out and stretched, ushering a quick yawn. She trotted to the mouth of the cave, and walked outside, momentarily dazed from the sunlight. Cheerfully, she trotted along the back of the river until she saw Boulder crouching of a lump of black wet fur. She sprinted towards them and gasped when she realized it was the Streamteller Raven! She stopped next to him and asked, "What happened?!" also noticing that Raven was curled up around a small kit.
