Sparkpaw padded toward the camp entrance, staring at the sky, when he suddenly ran into the barrier. "Ow," he muttered, stepping back.
Jaykit heard him and came bundling out of the medicine den. "Sparkpaw!" she called happily. "I'm coming on patrol with you!"
"Are you, now?' Sparkpaw murmured, bending down to be eye to eye to the kit. "As much fun as that would be, I'm not bringing you," Sparkpaw told Jaykit. "You'll get, uhm, eaten by a fox."
He wished he could bring Jaykit; she was one of the only cats who treated him like he was normal, and he liked to be around her. Well, the new apprentices think I'm normal, he told himself. Poppypaw seemed to, at any rate.
Jaykit flicked the ground with her claw. "I never get to have fun." She began to wander back toward the medicine den.
"You'll be an apprentice soon," Sparkpaw called back, striding into the entrance tunnel without running into it this time.
As soon as he'd left, Jaykit whipped around and crept after him silently.
