Snowheart was flapping her starry wings, not quite used to their lightness. She flew down beside her son. "I saw what happened with Shadowwing. Are you sure that was right?" She looked up at the sky. "Now you have cast her out, and she has nobody." Snowheart put a long wing around Oakwing. "She lost almost all of her friends; she lost her hatchlings and you; think about how she feels..."

Sandtail found the last bit about her father rather hard to digest. A DuskFlock Flock-Guard? Did that mean she might possibly meet him in battle at some point? She couldn't stand the thought. She thought she might change the subject.

"So, are we the only hummingbirds, or...?"

Verdant shook her head. "Hummingbirds are pretty rare, but not that rare. They keep getting picked off by crazy squirrels and other stupid mammals. It bothers me how we're too small to fight back."
