(good but don't use 'Calamity Jane is my hero' so many times. Just cut that out once or twice and you should be good. Bold is what you could leave out....remember this is just my opinion. You could also put she like in paragraph 4....)

Hero Essay:

Everyone has heard of them but who and what are heroes? According to Webster’s
Dictionary it is “one that is much admired or shows great courage.” Well, for me Martha
Jane Cannary, otherwise known as “Calamity Jane” is my hero. In my opinion, she shows
examples of heroism, in her great adventurous life as a settler, caretaker, soldier and many
other ranks in the early 1900’s. Prepare yourself to explore this heroic, atypical gal.


To me Calamity Jane is a picture perfect description of a hero. Calamity Jane is my
hero because of many reasons, one of the reasons why she is my hero is because she had the
poise to be different in a very discriminating era, where women were expected to act
sophisticated and to cook, clean and raise their children.

Another reason why Calamity Jane is my hero is because she showed extreme
audacity . During a battle with Native Americans, the Captain of her troop, Captain Egan
was shot. Calamity Jane saw the captain slump in his saddle and raced to his side,
dismounted to place him onto her saddle, mounted up again and raced to their Fort where, he
jokingly gave her the nickname of Calamity Jane. There is one source that says that all the
soldiers were “slaughtered” by the Native Americans while Martha and the Captain didn’t
acquire a scratch.


My final reason why Calamity Jane(put she instead) is my hero is because she stayed with eight men
ridden with small pox and cared for them using only Epsom salts and cream of tartar. Three
of the men a died and as she buried them she recited the prayer “Now I Lay Me Down To
Sleep”. She showed that even though she was a tough cookie she had a soft heart, through
her act of volunteering to care for these men that she barely knew, risking her own health to
care for and comfort them.

Overall Martha Jane Cannary, Calamity Jane, was a rough and tumble kind of
woman, with a split personality. One minute she could be mining for gold, drinking whiskey,
cussing, shooting guns and riding dare devilishly and the next she could be comforting and
caring for those that need her. That is why Martha Jane Cannary, also known as “Calamity
Jane” is my hero.)

Rowdy stomped his hoof. "Why can't she just leave us alone? There's no important shows until the last week of August and you could still compete then. Besides, she should be happy that I'm a registered champion, not just some random horse off the streets!" he snorted.

Sugar smiled, nickering softly to him "I'm so excited, my dear." she pawed the ground a little.

Sugar nuzzled his neck, sighing contently. "I love you."

Kaze turned around twice in an attempt at comfort in her stall. The large Mustang mare snorted and tossed her head, ears pinned. Her leather halter hung loose on her face, jingling at her slight movements.

Twist snorted and kicked at his stall, before munching on his hay and grain.

Kaze rested her head on the stall door, her ears pricking when she heard hooves pounding briefly on wood. She whickered quietly, flicking her tail.

Black Rose trots about outside before deciding it would be nice to just calm down and graze. She slows to a halt and grazes on the grass quietly.

Flare tossed her head "Protective is the reason....She does not know that....and she goes to almost any show she can go to. She is leaving in a few days with King to go to a small show north of here."
