"On the count of 3, ok? 1...2...3...GO!" Yelled Hollowpaw, and Ribbonstar pushed with all her might. Slowly out came one kit, two, three, four, five kits. Hollowpaw began patting the kits on the back, to help them breathe. "You can make it," she whispered to the 3rd kit, a Red Female with blueish eyes. Slowly, the kits breathing dripped off. She shoved on the kit's chest, breathed into it's mouth. "You CAN make it!" Ribbonstar stirred in her sleep, and Hollowpaw began to whisper. But finally, the kit stopped breathing. "I failed," whispered Hollowpaw, setting the kit in her nest. Then she went out to the edge of her cave and began sobbing.

Hollowpaw sighed. THe second kit had been dead already, and she had probably killed the third one. Meanwhile, Ribbonstar stirred awake, moving to lick her kits. Hollowpaw walked in, and began speaking. "Your second kit was dead, and your third just died. Your first kit is a Ginger Female, the second kit was a silver Female, The third was a Ginger Tom, the fourth is a Silver Tom, and the fifth is a Ginger tom with white markings around the tail and legs." Ribbonstar nodded, then the fact set in. 2 of her kits were dead. She began crying, and Hollowpaw came and cried with her.

"I want Redfox to be here for the naming, but I can name one right now. The Ginger Female will be Carrotkit." She then fell back asleep as Carrotkit and the other two came and suckled lovingly. In her sleep, she licked them clean and cuddled them carefully.
