Sparrow; Frozen Thoughts Colony; Chick

You call it immature,
You call me stupid,
You say my antics are crazy,
You claim I'm suicidal.
I'll tell you my friend,
I just know how to have F U N.
Sparrow was too absorbed in his fantasy to notice Sin coming up the hill. He snapped out of it when the chick-sitter spoke though, and a wild look came in his eyes. He watched the older penguin glide through the air like a skua until he hit the water and he let out a loud laugh. "Whoo, Sin!" He called out, sliding on his belly down the slope. His eyes were focused on the water and the slope before him that would shoot him into the water. It was when he had reached the ramp when he heard a voice, a penguin talking to a chick. He seemed to go in slow motion as he plummeted to the water, and he saw her preening a chick. She was a chick-sitter! His eyes locked on her figure, hoping she would see his foolish stunt. Before he hit the water his voice rang out, "Whoooeh! What a babe!" His childish words were followed by a penguiny chirp, similar to a whistle, that was drowned out with gurgles when he hit the water.

Kinapak heard a voice call out and shot her head up from the chick, careful not to hit it; otherwise, the poor thing should probably be knocked into the frigid waters. Looking around the direction it had come from, she spotted a young penguin - still a chick, she presumed - screaming off of a 'ramp' of ice, chirping in her direction. Kinapak never truly thought of herself as a sight for sore eyes; then again, the female almost never took time for herself. Her life was all about helping chicks, and introducing them to their danger-filled lives. The young femme was mezmerized by his trick, until the young chick spoke up. "What's a babe?" Kinapak shook herself from her stupor and cleared her throat, lovingly nuzzling the hatchling. "It's a word for older penguins, dear. Don't repeat it; you do want to see me again, correct? If you say that word around your parents, I'm afraid I'd be in trouble." The hatchling gave a small nod of recognition and Kinapak sighed with relief; she'd have a talk with Sin later. 'That was the chick's Sitter, right? I'm sure; Sin with Sparrow, that sounds about right.' She knew many - if not, all - of the Chick-Sitters and their assigned young; her mother was one of the 'leaders' of the Sitters. Trying to clear her mind of the young penguin's quip, she continued to groom the young one before her, who was now beginning to delicately test the waters with a webbed foot.

To achieve anything, you must be prepared to dabble on the boundary of disaster.

Sin’s head poked above water. He looked around for Sparrow, finally getting back onto the ice as he dangled his legs desperately to pull himself up. Sin was a particularly short penguin, though he wasn’t as short as some other penguin. He shook his water-proof black and white feathers, a little call of greeting escaping his mouth in the decoration of Kinapak. Looking back at Sparrow, he held up his fin for the other penguin to high-five, “Sweet move, Spar! You’re going to be way out of my league when you mature!”

The little penguin had grown accustomed to liking the yearling, though it was more of him being like his chick rather a lover. He shook his head once more, turning to stumble toward the female penguin, “What’s up babe?” Sin had grown used to the word “babe” ever since he was young, so it just rolled naturally out of his beak. His beady black eyes scanned over the female. Hopefully she did know he was really only one to flirt with the females. Otherwise she may not be comfortable with him calling her “babe”.

Sparrow rose to the shore and hopped onto the ice-flow that Sin was on. Even though he was younger, the chick had no problems hopping onto ice. He was large for his age, both in height and in big-headedness. Chuckling at Sin's rather gay comment, he followed him over to Kinapak, whom he looked at with great gleam in his eyes. He leaned his head towards Sin, his eyes still on the female. "Is she a chick-sitter?" He asked in a hushed whisper, though he knew Kinapak might hear. "Dude, how come you never let her preen me once in a blue moon?" He asked, chuckling. "You are one fine chica." He chuckled and walked towards the female, holding out a flipper. "I'm Sparrow, commonly called Spar, and who are you, m'lady?"

Kinapak heard another voice squawk out, and she recognized the greeting call, glancing down the beach. It wasn't actually a beach - or, at least in the sense that it didn't have sand. Instead, snow replaced sand, and icy waters replaced the warm waters typically found off of beaches. She rolled her eyes at the males, a slight huff escaping her; she was in no mood to put up with two rambunctious penguins when she already had a young one to look out for. When Sin waddled down the coast and called to her once more, Kinapak clacked her beak, the penguin equivalent of a human 'tsk'. The chick - obviously too interested in the water to care - leaned over the edge, peering down as if to see how deep it was. Glancing to the chick, Kinapak took a small step toward the shorter male, looking at him in a slightly disapproving way. She wasn't truly mad, though; she was rarely mad, and right now, it was more like she was disciplining a hatchling. "I happen to be getting a young penguin adjusted to the waters, Sin. Just as you have been doing." The female spoke in a business-like tone, taking a moment every now and then to peer back at the young, water-entranced chick. Sighing, Kinapak returned her gaze to the male, her eyes looking him over and taking in his already familiar figure. The other male stepped forward and spoke, and she stiffened slightly, obviously not taking his compliment lightly. When he offered a flipper, she heaved a sigh, but offered her sleek flipper-wing to his as well. "Kinapak. I prefer Kina, although I can see you have other means of addressing females." Kinapak's words were slightly teasing, though still serious. Taking a peek at the hatchling behind her, she returned her gaze to the males, becoming business-like once more. "Also, on the topic of addressing, please don't use such...strong words around the chicks. I don't plan on getting in any trouble with the elder Chick-Sitters."

Sin rolled his eyes at her comments, “It’s not like I’m calling you a fat blubber-faced penguin.” He paused, covering his beak with his sleek black wing, “Did I just say that out loud? Well, little miss priss. If you want to teach her you have to make it a game!”

He stepped closer to the edge of the ice, diving into the water and resurfacing to look at the little penguin, “Hola. And what might your name be missy?” He swam circles some as he waited for a reply, occasionally flipping onto his belly then his back and repeating the pattern. Finally stopping his showing off, he hovered in one place as he looked at the chick, occasionally dipping his head under water. “What do you say we race to the ice block over there? You up to that? I’m very slow. I bet you’d be a fast swimmer when you grow up, huh?”

Sin had always had a gentle nature around chicks, though with Sparrow he didn’t feel like he was making any mistakes. He pointed his flipper in the direction of an ice block not too far out so the chick could glance at it. Nodding reassuringly, he waited for a reply.

Kinapak scowled at Sin, her eyes narrowing at his behaviour. She wasn't one to joke or kid; that was probably the biggest reason - or perhaps the only reason - they didn't get along. When he waddled to the young penguin, she turned and allowed her eyes to follow him, watching how he behaved. She was wary of him - he wasn't exactly the best role model a penguin could ask for - but Kinapak had to admit, he did have a way with hatchlings. "M-Marie..." The young chick said softly, looking to her feet as she scuffed them against the ground. When Sin spoke again, the chick looked up, eyes wide, as if he'd just asked her to swim around the world and back. Seeing her shock, Kinapak stepped in, bringing an air of calmness to the chick. With a motherly instinct, she nuzzled into the young penguin's side, offering a reassuring smile. "There's nothing to fear in the water; at least, not here. You're safe with these waters, and this penguin knows them like the back of his flipper." The young one gulped, and the femme smiled, giving her a gentle nudge forward. "It's in our blood, Marie. Just try. Once." The chick looked hesitantly to Sin and suddenly squealed, hopping into the water. Kinapak was on edge as the small bundle awkwardly thrashed and flapped its wings, but soon she settled, bobbing on the surface of the water. "Am I...am I swimming yet...?" The Chick-Sitter laughed softly - a light, chime-like noise - and nodded, a smile spreading rapidly. "You've got it. Now, just a little kick, a little flap of your wings..." Obediently, Marie tried, succeeding in pushing herself onward. Kinapak smiled and gave a small toss of her head, motioning for Sin to take over.
