Sootface paused before answering, "I just want to talk to him, that's all." It wasn't entirely a lie--he did plan on talking to Jack, at least at first. But he would let his claws finish what his mouth started. "Maybe find my old mate, too." Even if they found Jack, he knew they weren't guaranteed to find Cherrytail as well. After all, if she'd left Sootface all those moons ago, with little warning or remorse, then why wouldn't she do the same with her kittypet lover? Leave him for another tom once she grew bored of him? But still, he had to hope.

Reed nodded. Sootface said that his mate was no longer mates with him, so Reed wondered what the purpose of finding his old mate would be. Jack had stolen Sootface's mate, so Reed assumed that she wouldn't come back. There's always hope, though. Reed stopped walking mid-thought. He noticed that the two of them were at the first thunderpath they'd have to cross. "Have you crossed many thunderpaths?" Reed asked. He had crossed a lot of them himself, but he never enjoyed doing it.

Sootface was relieved when they arrived at the thunderpath, changing the subject from what he intended to do when he found Jack. "I don't cross them a lot, but I've crossed enough in my life that I'm used to them," he replied. "Not that I like doing so," he added, echoing Reed's thoughts, "but they're a minor obstacle."
