Quailpaw had been so absorbed in her catch that she didn't notice her mentor Sedgebird behind her. She flicked her tail gently from the tip, and set the squirrel down for her mentor to sniff at it. She pricked up her ears when her mentor brushed upon the warrior ceremony."Very well caught, Quailpaw. You know, you're due to have your assessment soon. You're about of warrior age now." Quailpaw blushed slightly, before touching Sedgebird's shoulder with her tailtip. "Thank you Sedgebird. You're a great teacher." She then added, "About the assessment, do you know...how it is going to work? Do I have to fight another cat or apprentice? Or will it be different?" She had heard from her father Snowthicket that the usual assessments involved a fight with another apprentice.

Icepaw nodded along to his mentor's words, and turned just in time to see the deputy disappearing into the trees. Well, she didn't waste any time. He thought, almost in annoyance. Even though the task was intimidating, Icepaw was up for the challenge. Dipping his head one last time to Eelfreckle, he took off into the forest in the general direction that Sablefawn had gone. Soon he realized that Eelfreckle had been right- it was difficult to track her scent through the snow. And this is only greenleaf snow. How will I fare in leafbare?
Determined not to give up, Icepaw slowed and eventually stopped in a small clearing. Sablefawn's scent was very faint now, and he felt frustrated, taking a second to sit down and give the forest around him a closer look. He didn't see a trace of the deputy's black pelt anywhere. A wave of embarrassment flooded over him as he realized he would have to tell Eelfreckle he'd failed. His ears laid flat against his head as he stood and turned, preparing to walk shamefully back to where he'd started.
And then, after standing, he noticed the indent his rump had made in the snow. The layer of white was so thin, he almost hadn't seen it. Ears twitching, he scanned the rest of the clearing floor, and then realized- there were pawprints in the snow! Icepaw leaped to his feet and bolted into the trees, following the pawprints. He had been so focused on Sablefawn's scent- how had he not thought to look down?
It only took a few heartbeats from there. Icepaw quickly came upon a tree that had a familiar black tail sticking out behind it. Purring, he trotted up to it and found Sablefawn on the other side.
"I did it!"
