At the other apprentice's words, he couldn't help but stare at her. "No, I'm not. I've already put chervil on her infected wounds, and the water is to go around her fur so I can slip the thorns out easier," Azurepaw informed, somewhat matter-of-factly. He grabbed one poppy seed from the storage and gave it to Dappleheart, telling her, "I can't give you any more, so you may feel a little bit of pain. I'm sorry if you do." Azurepaw then gently picked up the moss ball from Quickleap in his jaws and held it over Dappleheart, letting little drops fall one at a time over certain areas on her pelt. When he was done, he set the moss ball to the side and glanced into Dappleheart's eyes. "Okay, I'm going to take your thorns out."

Azurepaw exhaled a deep breath to calm his excitement and leaned over her, steadying his long legs. Before he started pulling, he gently licked Dappleheart's fur so the water would spread around the thorns and her fur would be somewhat softer. He sniffed out a briar on her neck and grabbed it with his incisors. "One, two... three," the medicine dog apprentice muttered and yanked the thorn out. The wound began bleeding, so Azurepaw hurried to grab wads of cobwebs and placed one on the current wound. The rest of the cobwebs would be for the other wounds. He sighed as he gazed at the rest of Dappleheart's body, feeling bad for her. But this was the only way to take the thorns out.

"I candidly hope not," the beta replied dryly. She almost flinched as Bramblestream limped into the distance with her apprentice, their wounded silhouettes growing ever smaller on the horizon until they were just specs. When she was certain they were out of viewing distance, she sighed deeply and allowed her ears to flatten against her skull. That had been a tough one, that encounter. She licked one of her slender paws and drew it over her ripped ear absentmindedly before she hastily spun on her feet and darted back in the direction she'd come from. As she went over their scents again and again, she liberally scent-marked and dug with her strong claws, throwing fresh dirt over the old. She knew that she couldn't disguise their profiles completely, but she could make it many times more difficult for others to deduce that they were of RiverPack descent. They'd just register as a pair of random outsiders, too insignificant to ask too many questions about. While she covered her tracks, approaching SkyPack territory at a steadier pace than when she'd been forced - forced? - to escort two others who couldn't even avoid a lumbering bear, her mind wandered back to Bramblestream. She'd never admit it to her, obviously, but there had been something almost...admirable, about the she-dog. Her steadfastness reminded Nightfire of herself, and it had been in the face of, to Nightfire's standards, a relatively minor issue. It made her feel worse for letting them continue to think that Foxpaw was dead. She would be if it weren't for my Pack. Her own let her get swept off for miles. It was this fact that she restated and insisted to herself as she gradually made her way home.

Azurepaw's judging stare and tone of voice caught Foxpaw off guard. She felt stupid just for asking. She swallowed, lowering her head and gaze. She couldn't resist looking back up as she realized that Dappleheart was currently being treated; the slightly intimidating, older apprentice was a medicine dog, too. The fear in her was soon overtaken by her eagerness to learn. Instead of continuing to cower, Foxpaw sat up, broken leg splayed out from her body to keep the bulk of her weight off it, watching him work. All of her focus was riveted on his process, her expression suddenly growing intense. I didn't even know that water could be used for that, and I live in a Pack literally named for it. I still have so much to learn...

Lupinpaw nodded along with Doepaw, but wasn't quite listening; that Foxpaw had just left one of their spare dens, and, after much hesitation, had run into the medicine den. However, he soon spotted his mentor, Nightfire, coming into camp. "Hey! It's Nightfire! Hold on, Doepaw, I'm gonna go ask her if we can go hunting!" He ran breathlessly down the small hill they'd been resting on, and came to rest, grinning despite himself, in front of his mentor. "Nightfire! Can me and Doepaw go hunting? We won't go far, I promise." He looked up at her, excited. He had completely forgotten about the exact reason he had been in trouble the previous day.

Quickleap nodded, pleased to have helped, and was just going to ask what else he could do when that little medicine dog apprentice, Foxpaw, came tumbling down the sloped entrance into the den. He blinked at her question, and a small smile quirked at the corners of his muzzle, though it wasn't a particularly judging one; the way Azurepaw had responded, the of-course-I-wouldn't-do-that tone, and Foxpaw's shock and fascination, was interesting. Why is she suddenly so interested? This is something to sort out... he watched her staring at Azurepaw, too focused to be scared. "Did you come for something?" he asked kindly, ears flicked back in a relaxed manner. He wondered where Blackrose was, but Azurepaw, their devoted apprentice, would take care of it; he could tell just by the way he acted, and responded to Foxpaw.

Reedpaw followed Bramblestream silently, thinking. Smokenose is dead, and Foxpaw is dead. I'm just glad that we have Inkfeather, he can treat Bramblestream's leg. We're going to be alright, we're going to be alright. He repeated this to himself, focusing on not thinking about anything else. When Reedpaw finally looked up again, he was shocked to see how far they'd walked already. In fact, they were almost to the river.

All of his attention was fixated on Dappleheart now, and he had at least gotten through half of the briars on her fur. She seems to be doing okay... but I'll give her more chervil when I'm done, Azurepaw thought to himself and briefly glanced up at the herb storage. Perhaps I should have her eat something else for the infection. Chervil is just topical. "Almost done," Azurepaw announced cheerfully to the warrior that he was currently helping.

At Quickleap's words, he glanced over at the two somewhat talking together. It was only then that he noticed the apprentice's broken leg. "What in Starpack happened?" Azurepaw exclaimed. "Quickleap, please help her into one of the beds." Another dog to treat, he thought excitedly.

Upon stepping into SkyPack territory at last, her exhaustion finally became apparent to her. Every few steps, she'd snap her eyes open with no recollection of having closed them. Her muscles felt sore, even though her most strenuous activity had been a minor struggle with the injured Bramblestream. Sharp pain pulsed from the small tear in her ear. Despite it all, though, she didn't want to stop. She was making good progress towards camp, and that was far more significant than satiating a need as pathetic as sleep.

Her eyes flew open as the sound of a familiar, young voice filled her ears. Disoriented, she glanced around - and saw her apprentice, Lupinpaw, sitting before her. Noticing the eager, excited glint in his eyes, she tensed just slightly. Her apprentice never became this peppy - not without the catch of him having done something disagreeable beforehand. Her gaze narrowed the tiniest bit in her suspicion. "Clarify what you define as 'not far' and I promise that I'll consider it. And..." She studied his face for a moment before swiftly adding, "you must bring a warrior with you. It isn't required to be me, but I wouldn't mind if it were. I would just need to get a word in with Alpha, first."

The spell was broken immediately when Quickleap addressed her. Blinking, her gaze became timid once more as it shifted over to him. She stared in silence for a bit - and then it set in that she was meant to answer. "Oh, um..." Automatically, she glanced at Dappleheart, though she swiftly corrected herself, tearing her focus back to meet Quickleap's gaze...at least, almost meet his gaze. "I guess not. I, uh, smelled blood, but the one who has the blood - uh, bleeding - I mean, IS bleeding is, um...handled..." Her lips squiggled back in an awkward, sheepish smile, but the realization that the hope of her escaping had been wasted on a pointless instance of misguided sympathy tainted the gesture even more than it would be under normal circumstances. Ugh, I'm such an idiot! What are they thinking of me right now? She glanced nervously around the den, trying to read their intentions off their faces while simultaneously avoiding their eyes. They're plotting how they're going to kill me, aren't they? Honestly, they're probably just cannibals. I should've known this would happen! This was such a stupid - "Wait, what?" she replied to Azurepaw after her mind just barely picked up on his words. She swallowed and stumbled backwards, the prospect of others touching her, even if it was just to examine her injury, bringing an icy chill to her spine. Doing her best to remain calm, she rose to her full height and actively impelled her own tail not to tuck between her legs while squeaking out just a pitch too high, "N-no, actually, that won't be necessary! I'm fine. It doesn't even hurt and - oh!" Her ears perked up as she remembered her handiwork. Sitting back against the wall she'd unknowingly backed into, she jutted her broken leg forward. "I already splinted it, see? I'm fine."

The young warrior kept her head down as it was painful to move, smiling up at Quickleap as he helped out, it sting a bit when the water was put on her wounds and as the first of the thorns was pulled, she yelped before whimpering. Definitely not doing okay with just the first briar. “S-Stop! I need a break!” She pleaded before looking over at Foxpaw. “Treat her for now, I need time to recover before you get the rest out, I have a lot on my flank and that’s where my fur is the densest.” She said, the fur around the already pulled thorns turned crimson.

Halting his work and leaning down to press his nose to Dappleheart's, he murmured, "Okay, I'm so sorry. Rest now, please." Padding over to the other apprentice, Azurepaw noticed now that her leg was in bad shape but she was also skittish and afraid. "What do you mean you splinted it?" he asked and sniffed her from afar. She smelled a lot like herbs and of strange dogs, so Azurepaw assumed that she was a medicine dog apprentice from another pack. "Well, it's good that you splinted it, but you could be doing more damage if you're walking on it or by... tripping on things," he mentioned, not trying to be mean about it. "Can you lay down and allow me to look at it, please?"

Quickleap smiled gently, having somewhat figured out why she had come tumbling down the entrance: she wanted to help. He sat besides Dappleheart, feeling bad for her. Her pelt was a bloodied mess, but at least Azurepaw knew what to do. Meanwhile, Foxpaw clearly did not want to be treated. She reacted much like she had when he had attempted comforting her the previous day. "It's fine, pup. Azurepaw is not going to eat you." Quickleap said this jokingly, unaware that the thought had been racing through the riverpack medicine dog's mind a second before.
