Thornheart nodded sadly. "Yes, Flowerpetal shouldn't have died so young, but she will be remembered by all as she makes her journey to Starpack." The ancient she-dog paused, closing her eyes, thinking. "And I'm not sure if word has gotten out quite yet, but the two new additions to our pack, Hawk and Spotted, have also joined Starpack." She shook her head sadly, sighing. "Today was a day of death, but life comes with both the good and bad." And if Starpack is punishing us, may we accept the punishment with dignity and do all we can to make it right.

Snowstorm was taken by surprise. But she didn’t show it. “We need to try and stay strong for those we lost. I get the feeling they would want that.” She said remaining calm in these tough times. Surely down the road things will get better. She looked around, hoping to reassure the pack.

"Wh-what? Them too? Rive stammered.
She had been less than thrilled when Hawk and Spotted were announced as new "packmates", and Rive would be lying if she said she did not want them to go back to wherever they came from, but she never wanted them to die. Three deaths in one day was a massive blow, and Rive could not help but feel suspicious. Maybe Needlefang was right to be cautious. It seemed to be too great of a coincidence that all of these losses were unrelated. The thought that some great danger was upon ShadowPack made Rive's blood run cold.
The little omega started shivering visibly. She looked up to Thornheart, searching for some form of comfort. The elder seemed to be taking this news much better than Rive, herself, was. In fact, she wondered if Thornheart was even being a bit naive to not wonder if the deaths were connected.
Snowstorm, meanwhile, kept talking, trying to reassure the pack. Rive recalled her asking for volunteers to help bury Flowerpetal's body, but it seemed no one had stepped up so far. Thornheart was probably too old for that, which was understandable, and Rive hesitated as well. She was too small for hauling corpses, and she was not even supposed to leave camp, but if no one else was willing to help, she felt obligated to at least try. That was her duty, after all. Omegas do the jobs no one else wants to. Yet, she continued to hesitate, still quivering with apprehension. Rive was at a loss, overwhelmed, and hoping for something to happen that would make this all make sense.

She had sat silently as this was discussed. She might have to deal with some confused dogs later today. Great. Sighing, she got up.
"I can help take the body." she said stiffly, dark eyes scanning the dogs nearby. They all seemed shell-shocked. Death was natural, but some dogs couldn't take it easily.

Snowstorm nodded in thanks to the medicine dog. “Now I know they only joined us but Hawkfeather and Spottedfeather should also be buried with Flowerpetal. They were still members of our pack, even if we didn’t know them well.” Snowstorm said.Or trust them. She thought. Sure Snowstorm hadn’t really taken a liking to Hawkfeather but that didn’t mean the two shouldn’t be buried. Besides. She still thought deep down maybe Hawkfeather wasn’t so bad. But now nobody would ever know. Snowstorm was aware she was not the leader of this clan. But Velvetstar appeared to be taking in everything she was saying. Snowstorm gave an apologetic look to the leader. Snowstorm had just been made a warrior after all. She wanted to help calm her pack mates in this crisis.

She exited the medicine dog den just to be greeted with a different sight. Applefrost whined when she saw the bodies of three dogs lying in the clearing, and she slowly approached the circle of the pack. She stayed at the back of the group and peered at Flowerpetal, Hawkfeather, and Spottedfeather. Applefrost never really spoke to any of them, but death in Shadowpack was always grievous.

Thornheart nodded in agreement with Snowstorm, silently voicing her approval of giving respect to the recent additions to the clan. She's grown into a wise warrior, she has. Already looking past mistrust and judgement to bury dogs she doesn't know. We need more dogs like our Snowstorm. She suddenly noticed the expression on Rive's face, and her heart softened. We need more dogs like our Rive, too. A soft heart in a small dog is a lot better than a heart made of stone in a big dog. "Rive? Do you want to come with me? Thornheart asked gently, slowly standing up and beckoning away from camp and towards the elder's den.

With Thornheart

With some volunteers stepping up to help dispose of the bodies, Rive felt a bit more secure. What really helped was Thornheart's kind voice inviting her to escape from the sadness, confusion, and paranoia that the omega was struggling with. It was a heavy load to bear, knowing what Needlefang had shared with her and then seeing mounting danger appear before her eyes, but in a way, that still did not mean she had to bear it alone.
"Yes, I really do."
The chihuahua mix finally stopped shivering, and instead moved to follow Thornheart in the direction she beckoned, which appeared to be the elders' den. In that moment, Rive realized just how much she valued Thornheart's presence.

Thornheart lay down with a sigh, and beckoned Rive to follow suit. "Rive," she said, a gentle smile on her face. "Many dogs would envy your empathy and heart. Death is a hardship, and more so to the ones that can feel, but don't ever mistake that for a weakness. Apathy is weakness, not empathy." The elder nodded as she spoke, her breathing steady and slow. She knew she spoke truth, for she had seen many dogs who refused to feel out of a wound they refused to heal, and each one walked down their own dark path, which ended without friendship, and friendship was one of the most important things a dog could ever have. You cannot own friendship if you do not love, and you can't have apathy and love live in your heart at the same time, Thornheart thought sadly.
