"Wait!" He barked as Foxpaw ran off. He quickly followed her, twigs and brush pushed away by his body. He stopped beside Foxpaw, "Why did you-" He started and then saw that her attention was diverted by something. He followed her gaze to the branch overhanging the river. "Why-" He said looking back at her but saw that she had walked away again. He started to get a little heated. "Come back here, Foxpaw!"

She was startled by the anger in Froststar's tone and whirled around, low to the ground, to face him. "I'm sorry, Alpha." She shifted uncomfortably, hearing the nearby water ripple at the movement of, hopefully, just fish. The apprentice swallowed. She replied, "I just - I thought I saw something useful, but I didn't. Can we just keep going, now?" She immediately lowered her gaze, realizing she had raised her voice, and she didn't bring it back up when she heard the heavy steps of Wildpaw, and probably Reedpaw, too, approaching.

She watched in silent surprise as her mentor snapped at Foxpaw - rightfully so, admittedly, but much harsher for Froststar than Wildpaw was used to. She felt a sudden frustration surge in her at Foxpaw's flimsy excuse, and said, with undisguised skepticism, "You bolted ahead of the entire patrol for something you could've only smelled, not seen, and only when you could've seen it did you realize it wasn't what you were after?" She raised her broad snout to the breeze without waiting for a response. The strongest scent in the air was sweet and overpowering, and, when she peered over to its source, she realized it was honey, hanging over the local lake. She didn't know much about herbs, obviously, but she knew that honey was one of them. She was about to ask why she was lying to them, but decided not to when she remembered her place and that others were watching her. Instead, she just fixed Foxpaw with a hard look, stepping back to give Froststar and her space.

Reedpaw blinked at Wildpaw's sudden surge of sadness. He was trying to think of the best possible thing to say ("I know you like him" or "Hey, I was just kidding, it's mostly my fault"), when Foxpaw burst ahead, Froststar following. She ran to the waters edge, and from where he was standing, he could see her putting on the brakes last-minute, barely missing falling into the water. What was THAT? Reedpaw thought. He stood to the side, simply listening as Froststar and Wildpaw took their turns yelling at her. Reedpaw surprised himself into feeling somewhat bad for Foxpaw. But hearing Wildpaw's comment, and following her gaze, he saw the honey. Huh... so she smelled it. Of course she did. We couldn't smell a coyote over this stuff. And... she saw it... but didn't cross the river to get it? Reedpaw looked skywards, his brow furrowed. Was Foxpaw afraid of.... water? Absurd, he scolded himself. If she was scared of water... Reedpaw looked back towards the arguing dogs, though he wasn't going to say anything. He had been kidding about Froststar and saying one more thing out of his place, but then, he wasn't kidding about the I'm-not-doing-it-again-at-least-today part. He looked back towards the honey. Geez, she thinks she has to do everything alone. WE could get the honey...

Noticing that all three of her companions had seen what she had been after, she swiftly remarked, "I have plenty of honey already. I thought it was something else." As genuine as she actually sounded, her lie still seemed painful to her own ears and it took real effort to not wince at herself. Wildpaw had taken a step back, but Foxpaw still cringed away from her intense stare. She had to admit, Wildpaw was starting to put her off; she'd seemed so shy and nonconfrontational before, even friendly, but now she was somewhat intimidating, especially because of how big she was. Foxpaw kept her eyes locked on Froststar, because, as frightening as his snappishness was, it was preferable to Wildpaw's frustration. She felt as if the towering female was going to bite her at any moment. Then, an idea came to her. "I just don't feel like I need it, but you can go get it if you think I do. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have extra."

She kept staring at Foxpaw in confused silence. Seeing her avert her gaze, obviously intimidated, made Wildpaw feel awful somewhere in the back of her mind, but the sudden onset of frustration overwhelmed it. She could've gotten hurt, and she won't even tell us why. She turned to look at the lake, searching for anything that could've spooked her. Was it possible that she was just afraid of the water? That was unheard of for a RiverPack dog; it couldn't possibly be true. Then again, she did seem kind of like a ball of nerves with irrational phobias in general... She then glanced back to Foxpaw as she offered her companions up to retrieve the medicine. Wildpaw raised a brow, annoyed and insulted that the medicine dog apprentice believed them stupid enough to fall for her manipulative offering. She shook her large, scruffy head, and turned to her mentor. "Can we just go get it for her, Froststar?"

"What was all of that about exactly? You ask to be accompanied, and not even in the first twenty Fox-lengths you run off!" He now noticed the distinctive sweet smell of honey now. "And not only that you, you saw honey, and you know it's there. Otherwise you would never had taken of running. Yet you walk away from it." He dug his claws in the ground. Trying to ease out some of his anger. "Now, I don't care if it's not going to do much compared to some of the other herbs, but if that honey is going to help out my clan." He gestured to the hive with his muzzle. "Then I will do whatever in my power to get it. Do you understand?" He calmed down and looked over at Wildpaw, as she asked her question. "We are now." He said calmly, and turned around toward the creek. I don't believe that she has very much honey at all, and If she did already have honey like she said she did. Then why did she run to it? Wouldn't she have smelled it and realized that she already had it? He stopped at the creek and looked back up at the honey. Why? He wondered to himself. He then realized that the beehive was above water. Of course he saw this before, but he fully understood that the beehive was above water now. For whatever reason, I think she might be scared of water. He made a mental note as he realized this. I'm not done with this topic. When I get this honey, I won't be done with Wildpaw, she might think I forgot about this incident before the end of the day, but I will address it the next time I get a chance.

She wants us to get it for her, he realized. Foxpaw, like Wildpaw, was very interesting to Reedpaw, but unlike Wildpaw's fascinating mood swings, and intimidating size, Foxpaw preferred to keep everything about her locked away, making it hard for others to know her. There's a reason every dog becomes a medicine dog. Why Foxpaw? It could be shyness, her nervousness, or size, I suppose... As Reedpaw was thinking of all this, he was jolted back to reality as Froststar once again began his scolding. Well, I guess it means we're getting it, he thought. Reedpaw turned towards the hive, river, and tree. Hmmm... the tree seemed incredibly weak, as it was leaning over the water, and the weight of the hive seemed to be dragging it down. Reedpaw slowly walked towards the riverbed, gauging the distance, wondering if he could make the jump. Although he was a good jumper, it was pretty far, and if he missed or dropped it, they might lose the honey. And, bees. Let's not forget bees... The river seemed too strong to stand in for very long as well. Reedpaw then walked over to the base of the tree and studied it closely. It looked like it would fall if something bashed into it. "Froststar, how do you think we should get the honey?" Reedpaw asked.

She flinched at Froststar's words, then nodded meekly. "Yes, Alpha. I understand." She sighed quietly in relief as the others turned away from her, to the attention of the hive. Why of all places did that hive need to be hanging there? It's like StarPack wants me to fail... Foxpaw was a little worried about their ability to obtain honey - she didn't want it washing away downstream because of their failure - but she was too relieved at the prospect of not needing to obtain it herself that she didn't dare say another word.

Wildpaw inspected the beehive's placement. It was such an inconvenient place for any dog to try and get something from, with the frailty of the tree and the slipperiness of the bank - which, now that she thought about it, was probably the very reason that the bees had picked that location. She dipped a huge paw into the water, testing the stream's strength. "I think I can stand in this, but not for too long. Hm...Okay, I have an idea. If I hold the base of the tree up from inside the stream, it can probably hold some dog's weight. Reedpaw, you're the lightest -" she paused for a moment, realizing that Foxpaw was the lightest, but she kept her comment to herself "- so you can get on my back to reach high enough to rip that beehive off the tree, then jump directly onto the bank to avoid losing any honey. What do you guys think?" She realized she had gone on a bit of a tangent, and she averted her gaze from the others in mild embarrassment, both because she'd barely given them the chance to suggest anything and because ears were turned toward her. There was also this underlying fear that her plan could just be plain stupid and the others would judge her for even making it.

Reedpaw smiled encouragingly at Wildpaw. "I, for one, approve!" He said honestly, but saying in a cheerful manner. "I bet I could reach the hive standing on your back... pretty easily actually." Reedpaw leaned out over the water, trying to decide on his jump. If Wildpaw holds it up, I could probably stand on my hind legs and grab it, then jump to safety. But... we have to be fast, as she's right; That stream is strong, and no dog can stand still and upright in it forever... "Froststar, what do you think?" he asked. Reedpaw had also wanted to ask Foxpaw what she thought, but then, Froststar probably wouldn't approve, so he had decided to ask his leader instead.

She listened to Wildpaw's plan with perked ears. It surprised Foxpaw, how quickly Wildpaw had thought of that and how she had accounted for everything, but she still didn't trust it. She wondered if they would ask for her opinion and felt a tiny bit hurt when they didn't. She would keep her jaws shut, though, especially since everyone but Reedpaw was starting to get impatient with her. She waited for Froststar to approve the plan, eager to hurry up and get this honey so that she could get back to looking for more herbs.

Wildpaw blinked in surprise at Reedpaw's agreement. For some odd reason, she'd had it set in her mind that her companions would hate her plan. She felt a surge of warmth in response to his encouraging smile. She returned the gesture with a slightly bashful one, gaze dropping to the ground while she dragged a big paw through it, and murmured, "Thanks, Reedpaw." She then looked over at her mentor, awaiting his input.

Froststar sta down as Wildpaw explained her plan. He sat up as none other than Reepaw asked him what he thought. I didn't know he knew how to ask a warrior or a leader, before he went off and did his own thing. Froststar thought sarcastically. He focused his mind on the plan though. Froststar thought for a moment and nodded his agreement, "it might work. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try at the least." He told them.
