Bramblestream looked down at the worried apprentice. "If we want to find Bramblestream, we'll have to," she said, looking at the river. She knew she was a strong swimmer and undoubtedly Reedpaw was too but not even the strongest swimmer could paddle against the rushing water of this river. Her maternal instincts told her protect Reedpaw as best as she could. She turned to face him, her face deadly serious. "I'm going to cross first. If I make it to the other side you can come too but if I get swept away you must go back to camp and get more help," she said. Although they were a long ways from their pack camp, Reedpaw could just follow the river back the way they came and make his way home if worse came to worse. Bramblestream put her paws in the shallow bank water, eyeing the current deeper into the river. Starpack please help me, she thought as she swallowed her fear and sprinted into the water. With a swift leap, she was submerged and the water tumbled over her. Her paws hit a hard surface and she pushed with all of her strength until her head was above the water. The river swirled around her, dragging her down the river but Bramblestream knew that would happen. With all of her might, she used the rushing waves to her advantage, paddling toward the shore. Her heart hammered in her floppy ears as a wave surged and took her under the water again. The darkness of the water was only momentary however as Bramblestream clawed at a shallower end of the river and manged to drag herself out of the current. As quickly as she could, she wadded through the shallower water, pulling against the dragging water until she was on the other side of the river. Choking and coughing, Bramblestream sat down on the rocky bank and attempted to catch her breath. Once she was certain, she hadn't died in the river and was in sky pack now, she stood and made her way back up the river to face Reedpaw on the other side.
