no cat expected to wake up to this.

another death, continued suffering.

blood is smeared over dust like some sort of painting, and in the hollowed earth at the edge of the trail they find mistfeather, her eyes just slightly open, the tell-tale signs of teeth lingering along her neck. whoever started this was still among them, still waiting, still watching. beestripe bared his teeth, claws digging into the dirt as his eyes burned. ebonyshade looked away, ears flat against her skull. a choked sob issued from sootclaw's throat... one of them was a liar. one of them was a traitor.

one of them was getting away with murder.

Ebonyshade managed to tear her eyes away from the scene infront of her. Mistfeather, her own Clanmate, dead. Another day, another murder. She looked over at the two cats standing by her, suspicion and fear evident in her gaze. One of these cats was killing through her Clan. She dragged her gaze back to the body- poor Mistfeather. She shook her head, sadness washing over her as she thought about the she-cat she'd teased about becoming an elder soon, or needing her ticks pulled. "It's not gonna be the same without her around."

Ebonyshade swung her head back around to face the two cats. "We need to get rid of someone, now. We can't risk another killing!" She hissed, ears pinned flat against her head. She took a deep breath, letting herself unwind. "We should have a vote." She declared in a much calmer manner this time. "Whichever cat gets the most votes has to leave and not come back."

Beestripe huffed, glaring at Ebonyshade. "Even if we vote out a cat, we could vote out the wrong one. This is twoleg territory, we could still get captured! It's not safe here, even if we get rid of the traitor." He hissed, flicking his tail and moving to sit beside Sootclaws. "I still think we should keep moving." He sniffed, laying down and burying his nose into his paws.

Sootclaws stood tall, her eyes betraying no emotion. "We have to move on. A twoleg problem is the last thing we need to face right now." Glancing around, she sighed. "I stand with Beestripe, though I'm not sure how long we can keep moving like this."

a halfbridge to your left, a halfbridge to your right.
there is nowhere to run to, here. perhaps some of
you could swim to the island, if you really tried. or
maybe that's just a silly dream, an attempt to find
escape from the nightmare in the woods as the
water laps your paws.

ebonyshade's fury at not casting a vote was well placed.

the clan had had only one chance... she'd seen the clues and knew they were running out of time, quickly. the way their higher ups had been poisoned. how mistfeather had been mauled by something much bigger, much stronger than a cat. she knew, so it was time for her to be stopped.

when sootclaws woke, her heart dropped. she didn't need to see ebonyshade's body to realize she'd made a mistake.

"...did you know?"

beestripe was sitting by the shore. the water lapped at his paws, rinsing the crimson from them with ever gentle wave. his back was to the she-cat, and dread filled her as she slowly rose to her feet.

"did you know that hazelfoot wasn't dead when they ran from that fox?"

sootclaws knew. she'd heard his cries as the rest of them ran, lead by the cat who would become the next deputy. they were all guilty.

"...i did."

there was a heavy silence.

"did you know i killed them?"

sootclaws's voice caught in her throat. she swallowed.

she said nothing as beestripe glanced back toward her, blood on his jaws, a cold fury in his eyes.

shadowclan never made it to the next gathering. nor the one after. cats began to grow concerned as the scent markers at the edge of the territory faded. eventually, one patrol went to camp to check... and found nothing but bodies.

four clans became three.

the bodies were buried where they were found... with sootclaws resting beneath the earth at the shore.

no sign of beestripe was ever found.
