It was another bright, sunny morning. Dewdrops rested on the wildflowers, birds chirped in the nearby trees and a cool breeze rustled the leaves of the great oaks surrounding the meadow. This peaceful atmosphere would put most at ease, but not Sunstar. His mind was deeply troubled over the events of the previous night. Old Thorneye, the clan deputy, had passed on. That meant it was time for a new deputy to be selected. One night hardly seemed a long enough time to grieve, but tradition had to be upheld.

Quietpaw sat a few feet from the fresh-kill pile, but did not eat. She was far too saddened to be hungry. Like most of her clan mates, she was still saddened by the loss of their deputy. Thorneye had been a cranky yet wise old warrior, and Quietpaw could only hope he was hunting happily with StarClan. She opened her mouth and sighed, though no noise came out. Amidst the wails of grief the previous night, she had been silent. It wasn’t as if she was physically capable of verbal grieving.

Willowbee eyelids drooped wearily as she scanned the camp with a blank stare from the entrance of the warriors den. It was hard to believe that LakeClan had lost such a valiant warrior. She wasn't particularly close to Thorneye, but she saw what did he did for the clan every sunrise, and the camp felt wrong without him giving orders. She noticed Quietpaw sitting with a defeated look across the camp and decided to check up on her. The she-cat padded towards her apprentice, greeting her once in earshot.
"Hello, Quietpaw. I hope you're doing okay, given the circumstances. It's awfully sad about Thorneye, but we should be glad he had a good life surrounded by cats who loved him." The warrior meowed in a soft voice. "We can take the day off from training, if you like." Willowbee tilted her head inquiringly, waiting for the silent she-cat's response. When they first began training together, she had trouble phrasing questions in a way that Quietpaw could answer, but she had improved greatly since then.

Zestpaw watched the camp wake up like a slow moving stream. The recent tragedy had upset her of course, but watching her clanmates grieve in inconsolably struck her in a different way. The young she-cat crouched outside her den, allowing the sadness filling the camp wrap her in a blanket of sorrow.

Quietpaw looked up as her mentor approached her. She’d always held a deep admiration for Willowbee. She was strong and confident; everything Quietpaw wished she could be. The apprentice strives to be more like her mentor, though their distinctly different personalities made that nearly impossible. She shook her head in response to Willowbee’s question. Thorneye wouldn’t want things to change just because he was gone. He would want them to keep their chins up and continue as usual.

The bright sun shone through onto Thunderpaw, who was asleep in the apprentice's den. He stirred, and as soon as he gained consciousness, he shot to his feet. With a quick shake, the moss clinging to his fur slid off. Yawning, he trotted out of the apprentice's den, squinting at the light. Immediately, he felt the pressing tension and grief in the air. He locked eyes with Zestpaw, and lifted his chin, turning his head away.

Cypressblossom lay in the clan camp, head resting on her paws as she gazed unseeingly at the flowers that decorated the meadow. Her mind was lost in the sullen mood that lay over the camp, grieving in her own way along with her clanmates. Breathing deeply, she quietly appreciated the soft grass that rustled against the fur, the beauty of the meadow and the warm sun that shone down on the camp. If the sun wanted to cheer the clan up, they'd better be happy, shouldn't they? she thought, trying to smile.
