I was sitting, watching a small bird, slowly swishing my tail back and forth. I should catch it, I supposed, while it was unaware, pecking at something on the ground. I began to slowly stalk towards it, my paws seemingly barely brushing the earth.

I dipped my head. "Thank you," I mewed softly, then glanced at Oliveleaf. "Well---I like Fernkit and Shellkit, for whatever that's worth," I offered. I was always reluctant to share my opinion; after all, where had it gotten me? Alone with the clan I'd left? Expecting kits I could hardly stand, sometimes? Why should anyone listen to me? Still, I tilted my head at the apprentice. She was a few moons younger than me, so she'd been a kit when I'd left, and she was positively adorable now. The kind of cat you wanted to protect. "Okay...I can do that," I finished, looking around. I had some experience finding herbs; I'd had to find my own for moons.

I nudged my sister affectionately. If Weaselkit was my partner in crime, then Deerkit was the treasure I wanted to protect. She was so precious to me---in my small world, she was the sun. Of course, that never stopped me from trying to get her to join her siblings in mischief-making. "Aw, Deerkit," I complained, "it's only scary 'cause you've never seen it. So if you see it, it won't be scary anymore!" I beamed, proud of my reasoning.
