on other cats’ conversations. Not even a day after Juniperpaw had
been killed, the Clan was arguing about who had killed her. About half
of the Clan was throwing suspicious looks at her deputy, and the other
half were gossipping about how Embercloud was acting. They
mentioned how neither the deputy nor the medicine cat said anything
to their Clanmates about the incident, and Mysticstar couldn’t help but
agree. She sniffed and flicked her tailtip before rising and leaping
gracefully onto the Highrock.
xx“Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join me beneath the
Highrock for a Clan meeting,” she growled. Anger and confusion filled her
gaze as the cats of ThunderClan congregated beneath Highrock, as their
leader had instructed. Most of the apprentices, especially Specklepaw,
looked scared and confused. A few of them looked as if they couldn’t care
less, and Mysticstar couldn’t agree more. She suddenly realized that they
hadn’t found Juniperpaw yet, but Mysticstar shook her head as if to clear
the thought. If she was merely yelled at, she’d come back soon. And if the
cat that had sent Specklepaw had kidnapped the apprentice and had been
in ThunderClan, more than one cat would be missing. She grunted and
carried on, the thought already whisking away from her.
xx“I’ve heard your suspicions,” Mysticstar meowed officially. “I see that the
Clan is a bit torn between two suspects… but I have thought about the issue
myself. I think there is one clear suspect here…” the leader glared at
Embercloud, whose gaze was fear-stricken. Mysticstar scoffed. They were
supposed to be the Clan’s medicine cat, but they couldn’t scold an apprentice
without feeling sorry.
xx“Embercloud,” Mysticstar began coldly, “the Clan has spoken. You are now
Exiled from the Clan, and are never to return. I hope that you never set a paw
on an innocent apprentice again.”
xx“I never have!” Embercloud yowled pitifully. “Do you all really think that
your own medicine cat would do such a thing?” they screeched.
xx“Apparently, yes,” Mysticstar growled. “Leave now, or you will be escorted.”
xxA single tear fell down Embercloud’s cheek as they turned to leave the camp.
Right as they were about to exit the camp, their home, and their family, they
let out a final cry. “I swear, I didn’t kill her,” they whimpered.
xxThe whole Clan watched as Embercloud exited the camp with their tail trailing
sadly behind them. Only her tailtip was in sight when a cat called
out.
xx"No! You can't do this to her!" Mysticstar and the rest of the Clan
whipped their heads around and saw Ivyshade standing up, looking
infuriated and devastated at the same time.
xx"I believe we can," Mysticstar snapped back. "Are you questioning
your leader?" Ivyshade glared at her for a moment before running
to stand beside Embercloud, who was staring at her, astonished.
xx"I'm going with them, then," she said with a sniffle. "Embercloud is
my best friend, and I'll never let them be alone."
xx"As you wish," Mysticstar sighed with a flick of her tail. She didn't
care much whether she left or stayed, anyway. She shrugged as the
two cats left the camp quietly and hopped off of the Highrock before
anybody could stop her.
