Murderers in Riverclan V.2 [Roster Update 10/30]

[gallifrey falls.]

Lillykit was sleeping soundly admist the other kits, curled up against
Riversplash. She had played hard the day before, and was quite tired.
However, a voice calling from outside the nursery disturbed her sleep.
"Lillykit! Lillykit, wake up!" The kit opened her eyes sleepily, blinking
herself awake. "Hello?" She crept out quietly, careful not to wake the
others. She purred at the sight of her friend, her pelt visible against
the darkness of the camp. "Do you want a quick fishing lesson?" She
hesitated. Her mother always warned her to stay away from the river
until she was an apprentice, but she could trust her friend to keep
her safe. "Okay," she mewed in response. The pair headed down to
the river, and paused near the edge. Her friend showed her how to
extend one paw out over the water and hold in their as still as a rock,
ready to strike when a fish came near. She wasn't quite getting it, so
her friend stepped behind her. "It helps if you're closer. Here - " she
suddenly gave the small kit a quick shove, and poor Lillykit tumbled
into the cold water. The current quickly carried her downstream, her
cries drowned out by the rushing water. The other cat waited until
they were sure no one had heard, and then slipped back in the reeds
and returned to RiverClan's camp.

Watch out, RiverClan! There's a murderer among you!

I'm going to get the old analysis doc up and running again
once I get a response from I.C. whether I'm allowed to
delete stuff from the old one or not. Until then, feel

Acornpaw woke up to the warm sunlight of the next day. Seeing that Twigleap was still asleep, she murmured a soft "Good morning" to her her mentor and then padded outside, deciding to check on the kits and see how they were doing so she could report to Twigleap later. She walked into the nursery, finding Riversplash curled around her kits Rosekit, Sproutkit, and Featherkit... wait, where was Lillykit? The little kit usually didn't hide from anyone, and there was no sign of her in the nursery. Acornpaw blinked in concern and backed out of the nursery to search camp, but Lillykit wasn't anywhere. She sniffed the ground and noticed her scent leading out of camp along with an unidentifiable RiverClan cat scent. Alarm flared inside her. What was Lillykit doing outside camp? Did a warrior take her out with permission from Riversplash? That had to be it, but Acornpaw felt like something was wrong and she sat down and waited for another cat to wake up so she could tell them about her worries and maybe they could help.

Nightfang walked into camp feeling a dozen years older, her shoulders slumped and her head bowed. The Deputy normally went out to fish in the morning, it helped keep her calm, but washed up by the river bank... she knew not every kit made it to apprenticeship, and not every apprentice got to live to be a warrior. That didn't do much to lessen her grief in that moment. She gently placed the kitten's soaked body near the center of camp, letting her voice ring through RiverClan. "Hawkstar." She called, her tone heavy. "I found Lilykit by the river. Riversplash, keep the kits in the Nursery."

Acornpaw jumped to her paws. "What?" she gasped. She padded over the kit, praying that Lillykit was still alive, just unconscious. But there was no pulse, no rise and fall in her flank, and Acornpaw sat back, numb with shock. "No..." she whispered, and licked the little kit's fur so that the soaked, messy fur was neater. "Why was she out of camp?" she asked Nightfang.

Rosekit yawned awake, and immediately felt an emptiness beside her. She noticed that Lillykit was missing from the nursery, so being the curious little kit she was, asked, "Mommy, where did Lillykit go? Wasn't she here last night? Did she run away?" After asking the last question, Rosekit repeated, "Mommy, did Lillykit run away?" She was on the verge of tears.

Nightfang looked back at Acornpaw, wishing she had an answer. "I don't know. I found her washed up on the river bank on my way to fish." She didn't falter, but her voice lacked the commanding tone it usually held. She was honestly and truly lost. She gave a sideways glance at the Nursery, silently praying that Riversplash would be able to keep the kits in the Nursery. They would have to know, of course, but they deserved to have the news broken to them in a more gentle way than this.

Puddlethroat slid out of the warriors den to a small crowd. It wasn't until she approached that she realized why. "Oh starclan." She whispered, thick fur spiking at the sight of the limp kit. Unable to drag herself any closer to the group and the body of Lillykit, Puddlethroat piped up from several foxlengths away. "Maybe she snuck out and fell into the river." She called, looking at each cat in turn before going silent.

"I think some cat took Lillykit out. I noticed her missing from the nursery when I checked earlier, and I scented two cats that had left camp, one of them smelled like Lillykit..." Acornpaw's voice trembled, thinking about the little kit that was now with StarClan, never able to grow up to be an apprentice and then a warrior like she had wished for. "I couldn't identify the other smell, but it could have just been you leaving camp," she finished. She looked up at the sky. I hope StarClan gives me a dream about what's going on tonight, she thought. Hearing Puddlethroat's comment, she blinked at her. "Maybe, but I don't think Lillykit would do that. She was always obedient to her mother and she knows the danger of being outside camp. Why would she sneak out to go to the river all by herself?"

Twigleap stirred, awoken quite suddenly by the commanding voice of the Riverclan deputy. The sun just barely shone on the horizon, so it was normal for early risers to talk in lowered voices; but Nightfang's tone was clearly not of the usual morning chatter. He blinked his still sleep-heavy eyes and padded out into the clearing to hear the deputy more clearly.

It quickly became apparent what the commotion was about when Twigleap caught sight of the soaked, unmoving body of a kit besides Nightfang. He snapped awake, immediately at the kit's side; she had clearly drowned—there was no question about that—but all kits usually had the common sense to not go out for a nightly swim. He felt dazed. "This certainly isn't the first kit to wander off at night," Twigleap replied to Puddlethroat. He then turned to his apprentice, and chose his words carefully as to not sound insensitive."That is ... a rather disturbing implication. But I do agree that this is unlike a Riverclan kit; the first lesson a kit is taught is to never go near the river. Acornpaw, this is your first death as my apprentice; tell me what you observe."
