She lowered her head in shame, slightly frightened by her leader's abrasiveness. She had hoped Echo would be more kind, but Whitewater did understand that the intruder would have to be dealt with. But when she realized that Echo was not aware of Birch's disability, her ears shot upwards and she looked to her leader. "Actually, uh, he's mute." she said, and surprised herself with her own forwardness. She continued to speak for the newcomer, knowing that he could not diffuse the situation on his own. "But his name is Birch. He has a way of communicating with actions rather than words, Echo. I didn't think it would be any harm to bring him back here, he obviously isn't a threat to us," though Whitewater didn't know how much she believed that, she said it, someone needed to advocate for Birch, "he seemed interested in joining Winterclan, at least from what I gathered. He's barely more than an apprentice, he could learn our ways."

Webpaw had been watching the whole scene unfold. First, when Whitewater had brought the strange new cat into camp, and then when Echo had questioned him. He quite agreed with his leader, this cat was an intruder. When Whitewater suggested that this new cat, Birch, who couldn't even speak for himself, be allowed to join Winterclan as an apprentice, he felt outrage fill his chest. Standing, and seemingly forgetting that he was just an apprentice, he let himself speak. "Why would you let him join when there are apprentices in this clan who don't even have mentors of their own? Apprentices who know the code, and aren't just a loner looking for sanctuary?" his voice was low and calm, but carried so that he knew everyone would hear. And with a glance at Birch, he had let a cool venom fill his tone. Webpaw knew his position on this topic would be heard and known, however young he may be. His sense had returned, and he knew he had spoken out of turn, and that Echo was likely to reprimand him, but Webpaw didn't care.

She glared at Birch. "And why should I let him?" She questioned, looking at Birch. He did seem capable, but she was suspicious.

Birch realized he still had the squirrel in front of him. He saw a pile of prey, and assumed he should put it there. He grabbed the squirrel in his jaws and walked over to the pile, then placed it there. He hurried back to his spot by the wall. He was thinking of just walking out of the camp, and maybe even the clan territory, but he stayed put.

When lightning was warm enough to walk back to camp, he picked up the fish and headed back to the warmth of his den. "I'll start hunting again when I'm dry." He said. When he walked into camp, he heard commotion, then looked at Birch and pity instantly struck the pit of his stomach. He went over and sat next to Birch, then smiled to him. "To Whitewater's defense." He said, looking at Echo. "We can't just let a kit die. What kind of cats would we be if we did that? And anyways, he could grow to be a great warrior some day. He could help this clan. It will be one more cat to hunt." He spoke up, then wrapped his tail around Birch. If no one else would, he would help raise and defend the poor thing. "We have enough warriors to be mentors. Heck, I'll be a mentor."

River looked around when she found a good enough spot. Spotting a squirrel, she flicked her ears in that direction. climb she mouthed to her apprentice. She then slowly made her way around the tree so that Sunpaw could chase the prey right into her claws.

She nodded and started climbing the tree expertly and silently. Once she was above the squirrel, she rustled the branches and she squirrel bounded down the tree.

Birch looked at Lightning, surprised by the fact that he was defending him. Did he really look like a kit? He was seven moons old! Well, it was better than not being defended at all.

Autumn couldn't help but agree with Lightning. ''It's not like he can do any harm to us if he does have bad intentions. What could some random cat do against an entire clan, even if it's a small one?'' She said.

Whitewater relaxed as Lightning sided with her and Birch, and felt the tight nervousness in her chest relax. Holding her head a little higher, she flashed a grateful glance in her warrior clanmate's direction. Watching Lightning stand with the young loner, she was glad that Birch had been able to garner support. She knew he would need it, especially when he would face the ret of the clan, some of which would not be so welcoming. Turning back to Echo, she picked up the conversation again, this time with more confidence. "There's no reason to turn him away. We shouldn't think about this as another mouth to feed, but rather another valuable warrior. Once he's trained, of course." She thought of Lightning and Birch; if Echo agreed, they would be a good match. Whitewater herself had considered offering to mentor the young cat, but she was young herself. And, after all, she hadn't stood up for him as much as she had hoped to. Anyway, she had less experience, barely a warrior herself.

She narrowed her eyes. "Whitewater and Lightning, go test him. I shall decide if he is worthy." She decided, flicking her tail dismissing them.

Taken aback by Echo's request, Whitewater dipped her head to the Winterclan leader. "Of course." she said, in a respectful tone, and spun to face Birch and Lightning. Giving them her full attention, she looked questioningly at Lightning. She had no intention in taking charge here, he had already asserted his dominance over training Birch overall, and Whitewater was willing to just follow Lightning's lead.

Webpaw snorted and turned away from Birch and the rest, holding his muzzle high and chest puffed out as always. To be quite honest, he couldn't believe this was happening in Winterclan. Where he came from, loners and rogues who asked to join the clan were few and far between, and only the best of the best were chosen to join. His pure-breed clan would never have taken in a mute cat. He supposed that things were different here, but Webpaw was still determined not to like the Birch character. Getting up, he bounded past the commotion and out of camp, careful to cast a passing judgmental glance and a low snarl at the newcomer as he went. He wasn't going to go far, just away for a while.

Lightning breathed a sigh of relief, then huffed at Webpaw's reaction, rolling his eyes. He then looked at birch, then flicked his tail. "Come on." He purred, then crouched down. "Attack me. Give it your best shot." He said. His tail steadily swept across the frozen ground. Not meaning to, he looked over at Autumn when she wasn't looking. Ever since they had met, Lightning had admired Autumn as more than a friend. He had no intentions of telling her, he didn't want to embarrass himself. Perhaps someday he would gather enough courage.

River thumped her paw down on the squirrel when it ran down, then bit it's neck, killing it swiftly. "Nice job!" She exclaimed, then pawed the fresh-kill to Sunpaw. "Here, you carry it back. It's your kill." She purred.
