Thornstep sat in the early morning moonlight and waited for his apprentice. He quickly got tired of waiting, and poked his head into the apprentice den. He saw Adderpaw sound asleep in one of the closer nests. Thornstep hissed annoyed at his laziness, and walked carelessly over to him. He stepped on Acornpaw's ears, Yellowpaw's tail, and Wildpaw's paw. "Everyone up! Work to be done!" He hissed loudly enough for every apprentice in the den. He poked Adderpaw in the ribs impatiently. "Come on, Adderpaw! Wake up!" He growled.

Acornpaw's felt pain in her ears, and her eyes shot open. She blinked to the light and saw Thornstep waking every cat up. She ran her paw over her ears in an attempt to make them stop burning, but it quickly went away. She hissed annoyed. She was on the last patrol of the night yesterday, and got to sleep very late and was hoping her mentor would let her sleep in, but Thornstep just had to wake her up. She got up and stretched. She was so jealous of Morningpaw. Not having to wake up every dawn to Thornstep stepping on your ears, tail or paws. At least she didn't have him as her mentor, she thought. She walked out of the den and saw the sun wasn't even close to being up. She could barely see around her! She hissed irritated, she couldn't hunt or anything with no light, the prey wouldn't even be out of their holes this early. She padded over to the medicine den to see if her friend, Morningpaw, was awake. She doubted it, but gave it a try. She saw Morningpaw curled up neatly in her nest, sound asleep. She sighed, and walked out of the medicine cat den. She saw the prey pile was lower than usual, so she decided the second she could see her own paws, she'd go out and find something.

Fangpaw snarled as he lifted his head and caught sight of Thornstep. "You're not my mentor, of leader, or even deputy," he growled, "So please leave me alone." The lanky brown tom was irritated and tired from late night hunting, and was not in the mood for an arrogant furball who has his head up his tailhole.

Starlingswoop awoke to hearing Thornstep meowing at the top his lungs. She shook her head and emerged from the warriors den, yawning.

The squirrel was in his sights, within his grasp, and the defenseless thing had no idea. Adderpaw crept closer, about to pounce, when.. "Everyone up! Work to be done!" he was dragged from his dream like a large piece of prey would be dragged along the forest floor. A sharp jab in his ribs, and Adderpaw was wide awake, scrambling to his paws the second his eyes rested on his mentor, Thornstep. The warrior could be a bit harsh, yes, though there was no doubt that the warrior was skilled in combat, and Adderpaw admired him for that. He was a formidable warrior, and even if he Adderpaw had a rude awakening, there was no talking back to Thornstep. "Sorry Thornstep" Adderpaw mumbled, not daring to meet his mentor's eyes.
