Mintstar sat up abruptly, head turning sharply to side to side. She grunted, annoyed, and got up, stretching her stiff limbs. She took in the fresh scent of pine trees as she walked out of her den, padding quickly. She didn't have a deputy, and for now, she'd have to call a hunting patrol. She went over to the fresh-kill pile and gently picked up a scrawny vole. Just like me. She thought, as she was the runt of the litter, but she'd survived what her littermates hadn't. She settled in a sunny patch of dirt in camp as she licked her pelt, grooming it. She took a bite of the vole.
