Dewmist purred contently, curled up in a ball of fluffy white fur. She opened one eye a fraction, taking in the pale morning light as it spilled into the Warrior's den. No longer sleepy, she arched her back in a luxurious stretch, and then padded on silent paws out of the den and into the Dawnclan camp.
Lilypaw had woken at the first light of dawn. She'd carefully picked her way past the other lazy apprentices and sat at the mouth of the den, grooming her soft pelt with quick, neat strokes. When her pelt was as crisp and white as freshly fallen snow, she padded into the centre of the Dawnclan camp, watching the sun rise and enjoying the dawn-time silence. A soft mew suddenly sounded behind her and Lilypaw stiffened, caught unawares. Her pelt smoothed as she recognised the voice, and licked her fluffy chest to hide her surprise as a small white she-cat padded up beside her.
"Dovepaw! You shouldn't sneak up on other cats; hasn't your mentor taught you basic courtesy?" she mewed coolly, more annoyed that the odd-eyed she cat had disturbed her quiet. Not waiting for a response, she purred in a sweeter tone,"Why don't we go hunting and show those lazy toms that the early cat really does catch the best prey? Come on, if we leave now we can surprise our mentors when we get back!"
Sleetpaw was woken by the sound of his brother's snoring. He lifted his head and saw light already flooding the entrance of the den. Alarmed, he prodded Clearpaw in the ribs. "Wake up! Dewmist said our mentors would leave our pelts out for the foxes if we missed training!"
Clearpaw jumped to his paws, startled by his brother. He turned to look outside, and his heart sank when he saw the pale grey light of dawn just pooling at the Apprentice's den entrance. "Sleetpaw you mouse brain!" he snarled, "It's only dawn! Half the warriors won't even be awake yet!" He sighed, exasperated, and sat back down. As he was licking the moss scraps from his frost coloured pelt, he let his gaze drift across the den. Little Redpaw was still sound asleep, his thick ginger pelt spilling over the sides of his nest. With surprise, Clearpaw noticed that both Lilypaw's and Dovepaw's nests were empty. He wondered what they were up to.
