Personality: Radium has a brilliant mind, but is easily distracted by thoughts of experiments and possibilities. He often gives little thought to how what he is doing will affect those around him, and as such has accidentally hurt former friends due to that.
It is never on purpose, and some one willing to speak up and point out what he is causing is usually enough to halt whatever he is doing.
He doesn't fall into the common 'loner mad scientist' trope despite what others may think though, Radium loves interacting with others, and is usually cheerful and out going, if a bit easily distracted at times. He isn't the best with noticing, expressing, or even understanding emotions, both his own and those of others, though. Due to that he never really sees the point in sugar coating things, he can be a bit blunt and painfully honest at times.

He has a second side, however obscure it might be. Radium has dissociative identity disorder, though he is completely unaware of it, and the second personality, Uranium, hasn't appeared since he was a foal. Uranium is much more violent and purposely harmful, both in experiments and in normal conversation. His only true goal is the protection of Radium. That and to have a bit of fun. He only appears in times of great trauma, however. Thus why no one actually knows. His parents, the source of the abuse that caused it, are both deceased, and his godmother, Foxglove, never saw it. Anyone else who ever came into contact with him just assumed that Radium was trying to act tough.

History: Radium Shield was born and raised in Canterlot, though his parents were... questionable when it came to how they treated him. His name was only 'Radium' at the time, as they basically only saw him as some toxic substance they had to deal with. He lost them when he was eight, however, and from then on was raised by his godmother, an herbalist.

Despite this, even as colt he was always questioning and trying new things. He discovered his talent at the age of ten, when something appeared in the school yard and no one knew what it was. The substance had traces of radiation in it, and this triggered the discovery of his spells. Using his new found abilities, Radium identified that it was dangerous and neutralized it. He also took it home to study, but that led to a whole different situation and maybe a week or so of being grounded. As well as a slight radiation scare. It was after this that Foxglove officially added the 'Shield' to his name, therefore making his name not a testament to how his parents had seen him, but an indication of his talent.

By the time he finished school, Princess Luna had learned of his talent, and he ended up employed by her to identify and remove unknown substances and objects that appeared occasionally across Equestria. He got regular paychecks due to this, but it left him with quite a bit of free time. He took to creating devices with varying results.
