Ashpaw sat down hard, feeling grumpy at Hawkbreeze. She hated fighting. "What do I have to do to go back to collecting herbs?" she asked unhappily.

[k9inpants]

Hawkbreeze whipped around. "Loose your prey for a moon!" She spat, done with her apprentice's attitude. "No get into your best defense stance." She added, sitting down and waiting for Ashpaw to obey.

Ashpaw frowned, put off by Hawkbreeze's sharpness, and tried to imitate the stance she had seen apprentices and her brother using. It was sloppy, weak, and so off-balance that a sharp breeze could have rendered her defense entirely useless.

[k9inpants]

Hawkbreeze leaped at her apprentice, hoping that Ashpaw would catch her and hold her balance. After all, I'm not at full strength. She thought, making sure to keep her claws sheathed.

Ashpaw yelped and dodged, backing away from where her mentor landed. Why did fighting have to be so scary all the time? No one else seemed to have any problem with it, but she would much rather just run away with her tail between her legs.

Hawkbreeze recovered quickly, shaking her head. "No, Ashpaw. Try to shove me away! I'm going easy! Try again." She mewed, this time instead of sitting there she bunched her muscles, forming a good attack stance, teeth bared, ears back and ready to pounce.

"But in a real fight couldn't I just run away?" Ashpaw objected, though she tried her awful defensive stance again, feeling wobbly.

[~Totally Insane~]

Hammerpaw nodded. "But what if she doesn't agree with what I do, or if she gets jealous when I'm deputy?" he asked. Tigerfang is the wisest cat in the forest, he'll know what to do.

[k9inpants]

Hawkbreeze huffed, slumping over. "Okay, you defeated me." She spat, disappointment soaking her voice. "No battle training. I'm to tired to fight you." Shoulders sagging and tail dragging the ground, off-white she-cat padded slowly off.

Ashpaw hung her head. She knew she'd disappointed Hawkbreeze, and she still had no prey for a moon, but she couldn't imagine how that could have gone better, unless getting squashed over and over again was better somehow. She walked back to camp, dejected like never before.

"Offer her something she wants, like being your deputy once I'm gone, or something else, I don't know. You know her best, you have to make sure she knows that being on our side will make her much happier than being against us. Normally I would say use threats, but again, family unity is good for your image. I hate always worrying about how other cats see me, but it is vital to becoming a beloved and long-remembered leader." Tigerfang advised Hammerpaw. "Bladepaw already feels attached to you, so foster that relationship as honestly and well as you can."
