Grumbling, Ashpaw reluctantly got up. "Why? Isn't that warrior stuff?" She moaned, dragging her paws. She didn't become a medicine cat to fight, she wanted to learn to heal! What did fighting have to do with being a medicine cat?

"If a badger attacks camp and comes for you, do you want to fight back or die? You need to know basic defense moves." Hawkbreeze hissed, wheezing.

Hammerpaw looked up at Tigerfang. "I killed them," he murmured. "My parents... I killed them."

Ashpaw
"The warriors have probably scared the badgers away from around here by now." Ashpaw griped unhappily. "They wouldn't dare come where so many of their kin died."

Tigerfang
So many steps ahead, yet so many behind, Tigerfang thought with an inward sigh. "Why did you kill them?" He asked steadily, his eyes trained unblinkingly on his apprentice.

Hammerpaw looked up at his mentor. "Because it felt good," he meowed simply. "The blood on my claws, feeling their life ebb away."

Tigerfang flicked his tail. "I understand, though that's not exactly what I meant. Did you kill sheerly for the joy of killing, or was there an ulterior motive? Did they do or say something to make you angry?" he asked. His plans would not work if his apprentice was a psychopath unless he was able to get some kind of hold over him. For now he felt that Hammerpaw respected him but part of him wondered how long that would last if he really did kill for the sake of death.

Hawkbreeze suppressed a hiss. "No prey for two sunrises if you keep on complaining like a kit." She mewed simply, turning, flicking her tail, and padding out of the den, hoping Ashpaw would follow. Suddenly, tiny paws pattered beside her. The off-white she-cat looked aver to see Wolfkit. "You're not acting like yourself, and cats will notice." He said simply, and vanished.

Hammerpaw flicked his tail. "They were being mean to Bladepaw. Mama said that she was a disgrace." His face hardened and that black spark appeared in his eyes, darker than ever. "No one treats my sister like that!" he snarled, claws sliding out. "Bladeaw isn't a disgrace, she's just soft."

Tigerfang gave Hammerpaw a crooked smile. "Sisters can be like that." he replied. "I was worried about Ashpaw when she was a kit, but she was chosen to be medicine cat apprentice so I felt I could breathe easier for that. Bladepaw, though, I think she is stronger than Ashpaw. One day she would prove very useful to you, so I would keep her close. Cats seem to like it when a family stays close-knit. It makes them feel like they don't have to decide which family members they will take sides with, and it saves a whole knot of other troubles in interpersonal relationships."

Ashpaw grumbled to herself but followed Hawkbreeze obediently. She hated going hungry when there was plenty of prey running, it didn't seem right to her at all.

Hawkbreeze huffed. That's why I've been so lonely recently! StarClan is mad at me! But why? Even if there was a slim chance that I might be sick, I couldn't have stopped it! Could have I? She thought worriedly, making her way to the training hollow.
