Ares eyes flew open at the distant sound of bird song, and then his ears perked up on the top of his head. He lifted his head and then let out a wide yawn, trying to rid himself of the tired feeling that clouded his head. Ares drew in a deep breath, taking in the fresh scent of the brisk early morning air. He looked around and noticed the thin layer of frost on the ground, it would surely melt away before the sun fully rose up into the sky.
Ares turned his head and glared at his fellow pack member, Nick, who was still sleeping soundly. He yawned once more and then pushed himself up. Ares stretched out his back legs and then shook himself clean of any dirt that had gotten on him the day before. A cloud of dust and dirt flew of the alpha, sending small clumps of dirt flying in every direction. Ares blinked at the bright light around him and then padded over to the deer carcass. The deer had been wounded before Ares had found it, probably by tripping over something, which made it easy prey. Now, the meat had been mostly picked clean off the deer, it would only last one more meal.
Ares lowered his head down to the deer and then bit off a large chunk of meat off. He chewed on it for a bit and then swallowed it down with a large gulp. Ares looked back at Nick and then let out a soft mumbled mix of something between a growl and a sigh. He would let the wolf sleep a while longer, but they needed to get an early start at hunting that day. The herds of animals were slowly disappearing, more and more going daily. Ares frowned and then looked back at the deer carcass, he was lucky to even catch the deer.
