A grin stretched across her face when she heard him purring; she was relieved she had met him first, also. She watched him carefully as he reflected; it was odd to see him frown when he was thinking. But perhaps that was what she did when she was thinking, Xena wouldn’t know. He would, though. Xena was tempted to ask him, but she heard him speaking, so the Ocicat listened carefully, her ears swivelling in his direction and eyes watching him thoughtfully.
He shouldn’t be sorry; it was, after all, her who the toms were after. Just by chance he was here. And a very good dose of luck that was, Xena thought with a smile portraying itself on her mouth. It was still a little hard for her to believe that things had worked out so well. The cat realized that her mind was just hardly wandering and would go farther if not stopped now, so she snapped it back to attention rapidly, trying to hide her emotions again. Hopefully he was used to that, or he didn’t pick it up.
Had he intentionally flirted with her? It didn’t sound like him at all. Most likely not, Xena concluded. It was probably easy for him, he’d grown up here with many female cats, plus he probably wasn’t that type of cat and from what she had seen, he did like her. How much, she could never guess. He hid things from her and buried them deep in his mind, reflecting on them often. He was a bit like her, actually. A great thinker. And wondering how far this would go, and where it was now.
Where to go...? The lake would certainly have more cats, but that would give her a chance to tell them that she didn’t want anything to do with them. But then again, she’d rather not have to lecture any cats like that again. And still, she would not want to meet them later. Better to get things done early.
Xena sat down in front of Dumir, wanting to get closer but afraid to. What would he think if she did? Xena dismissed the thought; the silence that swathed them was too long now. She answered, her voice full of...something she couldn’t depict.
”I would love to still go to the lake, Dumir. Better to meet the other cats early and inform them of my position. And lakes are like giant mirrors, I love to peer into them. It’s breathtaking. Truly marvelous, especially at night.”
