I purred as I separated myself from Frostpaw, though I didn't quite want to break the contact, but the purring stopped when I noticed Crowfoot. His eyes were cold and calculating of us and I shuffled my paws nervously.

Brackenstar slipped out of his den. Wonderment
glittered in his wise, moss colored eyes. He
effortlessly padded trough and down the gnarled
tangle of roots, maneuvering around the sharp
roots with practice. As he neared Crowfoot
alarm passed through his gaze as he knew
by the look on Crowfoot's face it was
something devastating. "What
happened?" he asked,
really not wanting
to know.

I've been through so much in my life. I worked and served my way to leadership, putting my own blood into this camp. But along the way, I've lost clanmates and kin that I love dearly in battles. Battles of sickness, battles of leafbare, battles of age, and most of all, battles of the clans. To be honest, I really don't think I can lead my clan into a battle anymore. For I am not fit to send another cat I love to a brutal death by a heartless cat. Even though I'm not fit, I must. They look up to me and would be lost without me. Would it be selfish of me to leave them now? Yes. It would. I cannot leave them now. Not until I know they'd be fine without me. When the time is right.... I'll go.

Crowfoot leaned forward, close to Brackenstar's ear. "Cloudfrost betrayed us. We were ambushed by twolegs
when we were dealing with a Fogclan apprentice crossing our border, along with Dovestar who as she said she
came to retrieve the apprentice. Our patrol and the tresspassers were taken to a nest. There were other cats
too and when I was freeing them, Cloudfrost said she couldn't reach a kit. She had me go in to get it when she
slammed the cage shut behind me. She said now I wouldn't get in her way." he swallowed and went on. "Dovestar
saved me. She forced Cloudfrost to leave the clans. Cloudfrost vowed she'd return and kill everyone I have ever
loved. I owe my life to Dovestar." He shuddered. "Dewmist didn't make it. Nor did Ashfire. They were swallowed
by seperate monsters..." grief nearly swallowed Crowfoot.

"I'm all busted up. Broken bones and nasty cuts.
Accidents will happen, but this time,
I can't get up..."

Brackenstar tried hard to mask his horror. He nodded
solmenly and made his way back up the roots. Standing
with his chest fur puffed out and Crowfoot at his side,
Brackenstar called a clan meeting. "Let all cats of
Birchclan gather below the Tall Root!" He was surprised
at how clear his voice rang trough the clearing.

Frostpaw went to sit down beneath the Tall Root. Scarletpaw's
pelt brushed his as she sat down next to him. He beckoned
Lilypaw to sit next to him. Scarletpaw gave him a look and
purred and perked her eyebrows. She shoved him with
sisterly love and looked at Brackenstar. Frostpaw rolled
his eyes at his sisters assumption that he like Lilypaw.
"She's just a friend." he meowed hotly. "If she's just
a friend I'm a mouse! Do you see the way she looks
at you? I'm surprised I have to tell you this!" the
she-cat purred with amusement. She just loved
teasing him. Frostpaw just flicked her ear harshly.
Scarletpaw just giggled.

Not forest born. Just taken into a clan.
There's bound to be cats who despise
my sister and I, so I make sure
I'm doing something my
father never did.
Protecting us.

Padding over to where Frostpaw was, I sat on the other side of him. Our pelts brushed and for a little while I cherished the contact.

Cloudfrost has been banished from the clans! Brackenstar let the gasps spread through the clan. When they ended, he continued. Besides Cloudfrost, we have lost two other warriors to twolegs. They ambushed a patrol that consisted of Dewmist, Ashfire and Crowfoot. Only Crowfoot returned. The rest were taken... His voice dwindled as he continued. We shall mourn them tonight... Taking a deep breath, he went on, trying to sound optimistic. Even though we are down on warriors, we will have new ones! Our apprentices will live up to the lives of our loyal warriors that would give their lives to the clan!. His voice rang through the clearing. I will now choose a new deputy!
