She compressed a laugh as she saw the confused expression on her mate's face and smiled at him. "Hey, Darkears. No, no, we were just talking, and Moonwatcher was trying to get me something for discomfort but the medicine cats were busy." She leant forwards to drag the squirrel and started eating it, despite having already had breakfast, she wanted to please Darkears. She winced as she leaned forward, and then gasped with pain, but tried to compress it, still eating the squirrel. When she had only finished part of it she gasped again, and lay down, wincing with every small movement she made. She panted heavily and manged to meow, "I... think you should get the medicine cat."

The Black tom gives a firm nod at this. "Yea, yea. Let's get some fight training done, we can practice some hunting on our way up to the hollow" he meows, heading towards the camp entrance.

Mooncatcher cast a thoughtful look outside of the nursery. She wondered what had happened to land Howlfur in such a sorry state. She wasn’t one to needle a cat for information but she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t curious over the events leading up to now. The leader would inform them if it was anything serious, she supposed. Not much of a consoling thought but it’d suffice for now. The pale warrior was halfway through her meal when Darkears’ face popped into view, his contribution to his mate set firmly in his mouth and looking rather perplexed to see Mooncatcher there. She spared him a mischievous smile over her mouse but it vanished quickly as Ashenwing accepted the squirrel. “You sure you’ve got room in that big belly of yours for more?” The cat was already full to bursting, no way she could eat that whole thing on top of the vole! Worried glances were stolen but Mooncatcher voiced no further protest, doing her best to ignore the winces and gasps.

If Ashenwing was in trouble she’d say – ”I… think you should get the medicine cat.”

What? Why would she – oh. OH! The warrior was on her feet; fast enough apparantly, to smack her head on the nursery roof. “Ow- Darkears! Get Berryfall! Or Cherrynose! Acornpaw? No, she’s an apprentice, uh… just whoever you run into first!”

Darkears manged to stop himself from panicking and nodded. He hurried to the medicine den and poked his head in. "Cherrynose? Berryfall? Acornpaw?... I think Ashenwing is having her kits!" He exclaimed, glancing around the den and praying that one of them would be here.

Ashenwing tried to relax until the medicine cats came, smiling at her mate as he left the den. She was still panting, but less hard now she knew the situation was in control.

Looking none-too-pleased to hear the shouting outside the den – particularly the nature of the awful racket – Cherrynose turned a disdainful eye on Berryfall. “Make sure he,” gesturing loosely to Howlfur. He wouldn’t put it past the warrior to try and slip out unnoticed and he’d have none of his self-destructive antics. “Doesn’t split his head open.” Ducking farther into the hollow he began assembling a small parcel of herbs together. He’d only recently returned to camp with his raspberry leaves and, wouldn’t you know it, somebody had to start kitting. How convenient.
With his sweet smelling raspberry leaves and a piece of chervil root, the tom slunk into camp to answer the distressed Darkears whom he sent an unimpressed look. “Calm down. She’s kitting, not dying.” Though his scolding was tired and had little bite. Really though, she would’ve probably been fine without him hovering over her but he supposed the presence of a medicine cat during a birth added some level of reassurance. He couldn’t rightly understand it but he was bound by his oath to do everything in his power to help them, personal opinions aside. Stalking into the nursery he was surprised to see Mooncatcher there. Was this why she’d stopped by the hollow? He could only speculate on her brief appearance under the soft wheeze of Ashenwing’s breathing. “You’re calm, good. Much better than your mate by far.” Setting down his herbs he walked around her prone form. “Let me know if your belly begins aching more than you can tolerate.”

Ashenwing shook her head. "No, I can bear it." She flicked her tail, softly stirring her nest, trying to say that she felt fine-ish. "Did Darkears come with back with you?" She asked quickly, remembering the half-panicke expression that had been on the tom's face when he went to the medicine cat's den at Cherrynose's words about Darkears not being calm.

Darkears hurried after Cherrynose to the nursery and hovered outside, wondering whether he should come in or not.

Lingering with Ashenwing, Mooncatcher found herself at a loss for what to do. This would be the first kitting she’d witness with her own eyes and her knowledge of the process was general at best. Her paws shuffled in the dirt, itchy her growing anxiety. It was a relief when the spotted medicine cat arrived with little fanfare and promptly began overseeing her friend’s comfort. She wasn’t sure what she was expecting but being addressed directly made her jump. The she-cat was not too pleased to be ordered around in such a brisk fashion and pursed her lips at the tom but voiced no opposition. “I guess you can take my spot now, Darkears.” she said, looking a little put out as she padded out of the Nursery to get fresh moss.

Cherrynose didn’t bother to repress his scoff at her question. “Your mate is lurking outside the den but I’d prefer not to be crowded in here with the three of you.” Not that he was clausterphobic by any stretch but the fewer cats next to him the better off he’d feel in the long run. StarClan knows all he needed was for some hapless mousebrain to trample one of her kits seconds after birthing them. “Mooncatcher, seeing as you’re not essential to this moment make yourself useful, go fetch some fresh bedding for Ashenwing.” The cat had scarcely even looked up from the queen’s laboring sides to address the she-cat and could only take a distant form of delight in the affronted look she must be giving him.
