Jason watched her for a moment, trying to figure out what to do, and decide quickly. Finally, he gave in. "Okay," he said, and looked at her for a few moments more. "I... I'm sorry about this." He said, then sprinted down the mining path, making sure to stay directly on it. He then sprinted to his room, and slipped into it, he kicked off his shoes. He then slid into the bed, and layed his head on the pillow, closed his eyes, pretending he was sleeping.

Drake looked at her, "I can't believe this." He said, grumpily.

As soon as she was sure that Jason was gone, River dropped to her knees and wept silently, her shoulders shaking. She was scared, now, and vulnerable... and the pull, like a current, that wanted to sweep her off the path, persisted. She felt the power of the spells and enchantments of the barrier, and, when she closed her eyes, she saw Hestia and DRake leading some slaves- searching for her. Shivering, she discarded her fears, and ripped of her sevant's robes, tucking them into a small handbag- which she also kept her book in. Underneath was a dark black cloak that blended into the night, with the faint remnants of an invisiblity spell woven into it. She used the cloak when she needed to observe without being observed herself, and had spoken many an invisibility sound into it. She walked carefully in her black shoes, which, incidentally, had a silencing spell on them. Even though it had grown faint- since she had not been able to renew it- it worked effectively when she walked carefully. Silently, she climbed the tree where Jason had sat the day before, and sat among it's branches, waiting and watching the search party in her head.

Hestia nodded miserably; she was exhausted, and now she as treking through the mud like a prisoner! Grumpily, she thought that it might have been better if she had just gone back to sleep- no-one knew the secret of the barriers, anyways, and no-one was powerfull enough to break the enchantments or brave enough to face them, even if they DID know. She knew that it was more likely a slave would try to leave without knowing anything- once they knew, they would be sure to always keep to the center of the path.

Sam finally went to Jason's room, breathing silently in and out. He didn't want Jason to be harmed, really- but he had to protect himself, and the mining status that kept him relatively safe from other workers. Knocking on the door, he pushed it open, and saw Jason slip into bed. So he HAD been outside... "Jason", Sam asked gruffly, "how long have you been inside?" Sam closed his eyes, waiting for Jason's answer, and half hoping he would say that he had just gotten back to bed after going to the washroom, which led off of a small door in his room.

Jason lifted his head off the pillow, looking at Sam. He was a good liar. But not under as much pressure as he was under right now. "I never went outside. I uh, just uh," he glanced at the door that led to the bathroom. "I went to the bathroom." He said, shrugging to himself.

Drake stepped onto the mining path, with each step he began to become angrier and angrier. He couldn't see the figure he had seen only moments ago. It was like it had disappeard.

Sam nodded, then spoke softly, "I know... I know that you are lying. I know that you have yet to tell me the truth. Think carefully, now, it could help someone else. Trust me." He knew that what he would tell Jason would put him and his status in danger, but he also knew that Jason would have to trust him first, trust him enough to tell him what he had been doing.

Hestia whispered to Drake, "I saw someone up ahead, but know they are gone..."
All of a sudden, a voice echoed through the night, coming from all directions and distorted in an impossible way. Softly and soothingly, whoever owned the voice spoke, "It is night. You are tired. Search in the morning. The enchantments will hold up." The voice driped with charm.

River sat in the tree, and saw the group in her mind. She felt a surge of anger, and, with it, power, and she conjured a simple spell- a voice- changing spell, and set it into action. Then she crawled down from the tree, and, with a strange source of power, small and faint, but still there, she ran lightly towards the building where Jason was housed, watching the search party, Jason and Sam, and the road ahead all at once.

Jason had gained his bearings, and his lying had become better. "I went outside for fresh air." He said, shaking his head. "Now, if you don't mind. I'm tired. And want to go to sleep." Really he just wanted to be left alone with his thoughts.
a hint of annoyance was laced into the words.

Drake nodded, then heard the voice. "Whoever that is is right, we can find her later." He was dazed, and trying to snap out of it.

Sam shook his head, getting upset. "Jas-on", he said his name with two sharp syllables, "I know more than you think I do. If you can't trust me, than how can I trust you? I have information you need, and I just need to know how MUCH you need it, before I go breaking my neck to help you." Sam was annoyed, know. He took a couple deep breaths, calming himself down. "Don;t get any ideas about torturing it out of me, either, because Iève gone through a LOT worse than what YOU can dish out. Either trust me or donèt; if you find you canèt, then it is my duty to tell Hestia just WHERE you went tonight."

River ran, reaching the building, and used her vision of Sam and Jason to find Jasonès room. Her insticts told her that Sam was telling the truth, that he DID want to help them, and hoped to intervene before he changed his mind.

Hestia nodded, entranced. She WAS tired....

"What kind of information? How do you know I need it?" Jason asked, "And even you don't know where I went tonight, so how are you supposed to tell Hestia where I went." He said, shaking his head. He didn't plan on toturing anything out of anybody. It wasn't that cruel. He didn't do things like that.

Drake nodded, and began to walk the way back to his house.

"No, but Hestia can find out. Wait untill River gets here, then you will know. Tell her to go to the part of the path closest to the mines. Tell her it is thiner there. Good luck," Sam left hurriedly, going back to his own room and locking the door, shoving the key under a dresser. If River tried what he was sure she would, his duty would be to stop her. First, he would have to get the key... and so he would not have to neglect his duty to let River accomplish what she needed to.

River found his room, and knocked on the door. She had seen Sam leave. "Jason, itès me," she whispered, "Can you open the door.È

Jason stood up, and walked over to the door and opened it. "Come in, River." He said, and once she was inside he closed the door. He leaned against it. "Sam said to go to the part closet to the mine. He says it's thinner there." Jason wasn't sure what it meant. Or what Sam was talking about but he figured he should deliever the message.

River spoke softly, "I suppose I owe you an explanation...", and the side of her mouth turned up in a crooked half- grin. "Well... sometimes I get... premonitions.. about things that are happening or will happen, like today, or I can sense something about an active spell. I think I know a way out of here- I sensed it in the barrier. It will be dangerous, and it will probably fail, but I'm trying it... and you can, too. I can only tell you what I know if you agree to come, otherwise if I escape, Hestia and Drake will torture you unill you tell them." Then she looked up at him worriedly, "I don't want that to happen... I CAN'T let that happen... so you have a choice." Waiting anxiously for his answer, she felt her visions dwindle and fail. They always had been unreliable... which was why , the seer who had cared for her was the one who saw the men come in the first place.
