"I can't go anywhere, besides back in the mines. Which I'm not going." Jason tapped the path, "Can't go off of this." He looked down at his book, "Why'd you want to meet me here?" He asked softly, not that he was complaining. He was glad that he hadn't gone back into the house. "You could hide, even he comes for you, then he won't find you." He added, as an afterthought to having to hide.

River nodded, understanding. She didn't particularly want to go to the mines until she had to, either. Then, when he asked the question, she answered, "I think we- you should practice some spells.... I will, too, though I can't use them yet. You can look in my spell book, too. You can even test the spells out on me... well, I hope you don't use all of them..", she shuddered, thinking of the flame spell. Then, in a gesture of utmost trust, she pulled out her book, handing it to him. "I just have one question. Why did you defend me from Mason? Why did you pick me to join your group?", she lowered her voice, as if someone might be listening, "you don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

[fly away.]

Jason looked at her book, pushing it away from him, not wanting to take it from her. "I don't need your book." He said softly, then listened to her questions. "Mason seemed like the kind of guy who wouldn't think twice before hurting someone. I just, didn't want you to get hurt." He said, shaking his head. "Not that I'm blaming it all on Mason. He probably has had to go through a lot. Being a slave and all." He said, his voice quiet, in a whisper. "I chose you for the reason I chose everyone else. I didn't want them to go through anymore then they already were."

River nodded slowly... so it was nothing more than that. Of course; what had she expected? That he had FEELINGS for her. Mentally shaking herself, she prepared herself for what she would say next. "No, you should use my book tonight, and any other night we meet. They gave us different spells, I'm sure of it. There are some strong attack spells in my book, I saw them before the duel." Reflecting, she thought of how she hadn't used a single one. Sighing, she continued, "and I think you should trade me off. I know how to work hard, and I've had it a lot easier than most of the others. Trade me off and help someone else- if you're lucky, maybe you could trade me for two others who are in really bad shape." Now that she knew it was just sympathy that had led him to take her into his group, she wanted to be in a different one altogether. She didn't want his sympathy; she wanted a completely different feeling. She kept these thoughts deep inside her, where, even to an experienced reader, they were impossible to find.

[fly away.]

Jason couldn't tell what she was thinking, he had hoped that he would be able to read her. But it was impossible, right now. "I'm not trading you, River." He swallowed, "I don't think I would survive without you to talk to." He said, shaking his head to himself. He finally took the book, flipping through it for a moment. He looked at her arm again, and wrapped his hand around where she had been cut gently. He then spoke a healing charm again, trying to ease the pain, and make the injury heal faster.

River gave him a small smile, blowing her hair out of her eyes. At least they could be friends... River discarded that trail of though quickly. Feeling his gentle touch on her arm, she looked down, feeling the pain ebb away. Sighing, she spoke, "Thanks... but I think you should work on the other spells now. If my arm looks like it has healed too quickly, Drake will be suspicious." Wincing at the name, she asked him quietly, "Do you know what time we have to be back?" She realized that she would be discovered if she was not in her room before morning, but the dark sky told her there was still some time left. She smiled into the darkness, glad she had managed to sneak away, and, for once, not scared of the consequences.

[fly away.]

Jason shrugged ever so slightly. He let go of her arm, but felt bad leaving her with an injury. He looked down at her book, touching a page, running his finger over a spell. "Why did they give you more powerful charms?" He asked softly, looking up at her. His mind was racing, trying to answer his own question.

River felt his hand leave her arm, and felt a strange pang of emotion she couldn`t quite place. "I don't know- I didn't really look at those ones", she admitted. "Why did they give you better counter-charms?", she challenged, her eyes dancing playfully. Smiling mischeviously, she continued, "ànd better defense charms?", waiting for his answer.

Jason shrugged off handily. "I don't know. Maybe so we were matched evenly, but in different ways?" He asked, pondering through her question. Every aspect. Trying to figure this whole thing out. Finally, he just shrugged. Accepting defeat of the question, and blew his hair away from his eyes. The brown of his eyes looked at her for a second, before glancing at the night sky. One could see all the stars. Much unlike the city. With all the bright lights.

River breathed in the night air and sat there, silently. She, too was looking at the stars, and found them brighter and more brilliant than she had ever seen them. They traced a path along the sly, and she tried to identify the constelllations. The night air was cool and sweet, and the moment was perfect. She woud have been content to just sit there forever, but she knew that she couldn`t. There were more pressing matters on hand.
So she exhaled slowly, then turned to Jason. "We have to practice... let`s try out the different spells." Smiling, she got ready to stand up.
