"You are not the first to Fall," he replied. "And you would not be the first to seek redemption."

[open appendectomy]

"Redemption? Have-have some of the Fallen gotten back? How is that possible?" Alyce said, quite suprised that there was a way.

[Interiu]

"Some have, yes," he said after a moment. "Most have done so by the sacrifice of a human with a pure soul."

[open appendectomy]

Alyce looked at him, shocked. "You-you mean-kill a human?" she stuttered. "But that's just…evil. I can't kill a human! But if it is the only way to get back…" she said, her voice trailing off.

[Interiu]

"There is another way," he said, "though it is not as easy. You must either kill...or save. If you can save the life of a person, truly save his or her life, then you will be allowed to return."

[open appendectomy]

"Ok…let me get this straight. I have to either murder a human in cold blood, or save their life? Couldn't I just…I don't know, poison someone's wine then stop them from drinking it? Convince someone out of suicide? Wouldn't that be very easy then?" she said, thinking over her options.

[Interiu]

He shook his head. "But then you have only saved their body from death. To truly save them, you must know them, and you must save more than their body. A person you poison was never dying, and stopping a suicide is only delaying their death until the next attempt. Either way, life or death, it is a sacrifice you must make, and only when it feels like a sacrifice are you worthy of redemption."

[open appendectomy]

"But, that makes it impossible! I think I'm just going to sacrifice someone. Much easier than getting to know a human…" she said. "So thanks, dad, for telling me all this fantastic news. Hey, before you go, you couldn't do me a favour and heal my leg, could you?" she asked, very pissed off now.

[Interiu]

"If indeed you wish to seek a human with a pure soul and offer him and her up for atonement, then that is your sacrifice to make." He touched her leg, healing the break and mending the bone almost instantly. "This is the reason so few have returned. I am sorry that you have to suffer this, and I am even sorrier that it had to be me who delivered the news. These rules are not mine, however, and if I could change them, for you, I would." He turned to leave.

"Well, this is just great. What else could go wrong today?" Alyce muttered under her breath as her father left. She got up, and with her leg still in the cast walked over to the cupboard on the other side of the room, getting her clothes out. She looked through the cupboard until she saw a drawer where a careless nurse had left a stanley knife. She got it out then sat on the edge of the bed and began to cut the cast off, white plaster falling like snow onto the ground.
