"Oh yes, that is very true," Robert said. "Horses are such beautiful animals, but I'm afraid besides for competition and meat, they won't have much purpose in the future."

Harold and Robert launched into a discussion about the use of horses and cars, while Alice remained silent, about ready to rip Lupe's head off.

Lupe looked happily over at Alice, falling silent as well. He figured it was his last night in Chicago, and he might as well enjoy it because there wasn't much they could do when they found him gone in the morning.

Alice ate in silence as everyone kept talking. Eventually, dessert was served, and then the men, not including Raymond, went down into the secret bar in the basement of the house. Lupe was invited, Raymond was too but he refused. Virigina and Dorothy moved into one of the sitting rooms to talk, Evelyn trailing behind. She wanted to see the horses, peering out of the windows into the night, seeing the outline of the barn. She walked over to where Alice was just getting up and spoke quietly, head down, as she was rather shy.

"Um, Miss Alice, can you show me the barn?" Evelyn asked.

"I will if your mother approves," Alice said, smiling at her. Evelyn went to go ask her mother and Alice was left with Raymond. (and Lupe if he's still there I dunno :U)

Lupe looked between Raymond and Alice and suddenly felt third-wheelish and decided to follow the other men down to the basement. He stood up, thanked both of them for inviting him to eat with them like the gentleman he was, and followed the sound of footsteps to find the other two.

Harold and Robert gladly invited Lupe to a few drinks with them. Anywhere from wine to hard liquor was being served by their own personal bartender.

Evelyn came back with a smile on her face, and Alice led both cats outside and into the barn. She turned on the barn lights and walked in. She took in a scent of the horses and walked up to Sunny's stall. He stuck his big head over the door and nuzzled Alice.

"This is Sun Omega, but I call him Sunny," she said. "Here, hold your hand out for him to sniff it, then you can pet him."

Evelyn shyly put her hand up and Sunny perked his ears forward and brushed his nose across her hand, and then Alice guided Evelyn's hand up and had her stroke her hand down the front of his face. He stood contently and let the young cat pet him, enjoying the attention. Raymond walked over to a different horse's stall; a black mare with a broad white blaze running down her head, named Carnival Star, otherwise known as Carnival. Alice let Evelyn move to whatever other stall she wanted too, telling her the horse's name and letting her pet them. Eventually, Evelyn went back inside, and Alice and Raymond stood alone in the barn. Alice was leaning against a red bay gelding's stall, petting the horse along his neck.

"So you really like horses," Raymond said.

"Yeah," Alice said. "Raymond..."

"Call me Ray."

"Ray, you know why our parents set up this dinner," Alice said, sighing and looking at him.

"I know. They don't want to force us into anything, but I like you," he placed his hand on the horse as well, petting it softly.

"I don't want to rush right into anything," Alice said, sighing again. This was very awkward, but Ray seemed all for the idea. She didn't barely know him.

"I'm not going to pressure you, I don't want to go fast either," Ray said, shrugging. Obviously, they knew that from here they were most likely going to be together for the rest of their life. "They want us together right now though."

"I know," Alice said. She thought about her mom, and probably Virginia too, who was paired up with their husbands just like she was going to be, but they seemed to love their husbands all the same- she hoped it would turn out like that.

"My mom gave me her grandmothers ring. I'll let you take it when you're ready," Ray said. "Trust me, this is all going a little too fast for me as well. I'm not even ready." He put one hand in his pocket where he had the little box containing the ring. "They knew I wasn't going to, but they wanted me to ask you tonight. I told them no. Too fast."

Lupe sat near the counter, listening to the men talk for a while, but when it fell silent he leaned back on his elbows. "So," he said, "when's the wedding going to be?"

Harold and Robert laughed. "Oh, if all goes well," Robert said. "Hopefully pretty soon."

"Who knows, they might end up hating each other. I hated Virginia when I first met her," Harold said, letting out a loud laugh. "Of course, after all was said and done, I don't think I could ever loose her now."

Lupe smiled, looking to Robert. "You're letting her marry rather young aren't you?" he asked. "I'm twenty one and I've not even looked for a woman in a while, let alone thought about getting married."

"I was nineteen when I got married," Harold boasted.

"I was twenty one," Robert said, shrugging. "It seemed about time. She wasn't looking for any males well enough on her own so I found her one for her."

"And you picked well. I bet they'll start off a little rough but they'll come around in time," Harold said.

Lupe shrugged. "I don't know guys," he said simply. "I think if you give it a little time the person who's right for you comes around."
