Jackalfur padded under the Highrock and stared up at the leader. She was probably just going to announce the patrol for the Gathering.

Berryfeather sat down beside the deputy and smiled serenely at him. "Good afternoon, Jackalfur." She turned her attention to Sandstar.

Sandstar

Sandstar cleared her throat. "I have two things to share with you," she began. "As you all know by now, one of our number will not be joining us at this meeting — ever again. Ravenpaw fought and died like a true warrior... So his mentor, Jackalfur, and myself, have decided he should have a naming ceremony... giving him his proper name so he may join the ranks of StarClan as a full warrior. Jackalfur, if you would join me up here, please, and Berryfeather, if you would be so kind as to alert Fallownose and Fluffwhisker to this, and to bring Ravenpaw's body out, I would be very greatful."

[Kess]

Jackalfur swallowed the pain that was forcing itself to the surface and jumped up to join Sandstar. He looked down at his paws, determined not to make a scene, but his heart hurt. Ravenpaw was one of his best apprentices, if not the best.

Berryfeather nodded and went off to find Fluffwhisker and Fallownose. "Would the two of you be all right with helping me bring your son...your son's body out for the clan to see? We plan to honor him now with a real warrior name."

Fallownose

Fallownose, choking back a sob of gratitude, happiness, and grief, nodded his broad head once. He nudged Fluffwhisker gently, then got a firm grip on his son's scruff.

Sandstar

"I'll let you do the ceremony, Jackalfur. I think you've earned it, and I know you'll want him to have a fitting name... so you may choose." She dipped her head and stepped back a little, giving him some room.

[Kess]

Jackalfur stared up at Sandstar with gratefulness on his face. "Thank you, Sandstar." He turned to the Clan. "StarClan, I ask that you look upon the body of Ravenpaw, and welcome his spirit with a new name." He didn't even need to think about a good name for the black apprentice; the name just came to him immediately. "May StarClan welcome Ravenpaw by a new name...Ravenheart. May we remember his bravery in battle and hope that StarClan agrees with the choice of name."

Sandstar

Sandstar dipped her head once. A fitting name. She joined in with the traditional calls of "Ravenheart! Ravenheart!" Sandstar could hear Ravenheart's kin calling his name the loudest, and she knew that this would at last help bring them all peace. "That was a wonderful thing you did for Ravenheart and his family, Jackalfur," she murmured. "You'll make an exceptional leader someday."

[Kess]

Jackalfur's face burned with pride. "thank you, Sandstar..." He meowed. "It was only right that Ravenpaw - er, HEART - to be honored for the brave death he suffered for us all."

Sandstar

Sandstar dipped her head again, agreeing. Once the chants died down, Sandstar walked to the tip of Highrock and announced clearly the names of the cats going to the gathering at moonhigh. At his name, Harefoot gave a small start and peered up at Sandstar. She met his gaze with a stern but soft look of her own.
