Jackalfur nodded in agreement. "Poor tom, he's been so depressed," he meowed. He remembered how it was for him when Whiteberry died, but that didn't exactly compare, since he'd never mated and had kits with Whiteberry.

Sandstar

Sandstar nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly. "He hasn't spoken much since, either. I think this will be good for him." She suddenly froze, dropped into a crouch, and sprang forward a second later. She reappeared with a vole clamped in her jaws.

[Kess]

Jackalfur purred congratatorily [?] to her. "Great catch!" he meowed. He was silent for a long moment, then meowed slowly, "The death of Ravenpaw has really upset me." The confession stung his tongue. "I've only had two apprentices, and they both died, as you may recall." He sat down and swept his tail over his paws. "Ravenpaw was an excellent cat. He would have made an even better warrior..." Jackalfur took a deep breath before continuing, "I would like you to perform the ceremony to give him a real warrior name, so that StarClan will accept him as a full warrior when he goes to them."

Sandstar

Sandstar set down the limp vole. She was slightly startled by his request, but answered promptly. "Of course. It's only proper he be given a true warrior name, as he died a warrior's death. And I think it would mean a great deal to Fallownose and Fluffwhisker. Would you like to do this at sundown?" she asked. Sandstar wondered if this was the real reason Jackalfur had suggested hunting. It made sense; he was a hardened, respected warrior. He wouldn't want to seem soft. A flash of pitty and grief struck Sandstar, but she pushed it away quickly. She'd done her mourning; it was time to move on.

[Kess]

Jackalfur dipped his head. "Yes. I think that would be best." He looked into the sky. "I want Ravenpaw to know we won't forget." He flicked his tail.

Sandstar

She, too, looked at the sky. The sun was already sinking down in the sky and the first stars of Silverpelt were starting to appear. "He won't," she murmured quietly. She picked up her vole and continued along the path, still alert for the sounds of prey as she led the way to snakerocks.

[Kess]

Jackalfur trotted after Sandstar somberly. His apprentice deserved a good name.

After they'd hunted for a bit longer and had a good haul of prey, Sandstar followed Jackalfur back to camp. She set her catch of two thrushes, a vole, and a mouse on the fresh-kill pile and hauled herself up onto Highrock. She yowled, "Let all those cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Highrock for a Clan meeting!"
