Jadepool sunk to her belly outside the den. She stared ahead blankly, wishing it would all go away. The guilt and the pain she was feeling now were more than she had felt when she'd been unable to save a cat dying from greencough. Or when Splashflower had died.

Sandpelt

Sandpelt stopped in front of the medicine cat, staring guiltily ahead of her blankly. "Jadepool," she meowed, trying to get the she-cat to look at her.

[Kess]

Jadepool looked up at Sandpelt, hollow-eyed. "I can't believe this," she whispered. "It's all my fault..."

Sandpelt

"It is not your fault," she growled, tail lashing. "It was a complete accident. You couldn't have prevented it."

[Kess]

Jadepool was shaken with emotion. "But I'm the medicine cat...I'm supPosed to heal.." she didn't add, 'Not kill,' for obvious reasons. "I watched her die. I watched. Her. Die!" she dug her claws into the hard early leaf fall earth. "I am useless!"

Sandpelt

Sandpelt cuffed a hard paw over Jadepool's ear, trying to grab her attention. "You couldn't have prevented it, Jadepool! It is not. Your. Fault. Did you purposely trot around the forest looking for a sick squirrel? No!" she growled, sitting down. "She died because it was her time. When StarClan wills something to happen, no cat can change that. Not even a medicine cat. And you can't heal every cat; it's just how it works."

[Kess]

Jadepool looked up sadly at Sandpelt and stared into her eyes for a moment. The emotion in the medicine cat's eyes were strong and unreadable. "I see." She whispered. "I have to go to the Moonpool tonight. I must tell Whiteberry I'm sorry. I could have done something, ANYTHING...maybe even ease her pain..."

Sandpelt

Sandpelt shook her head. "I doubt that she noticed the pain, Jadepool, as she seemed to have died almost instantly." Then, she dipped her head. "Alright. If it makes you feel better, go to the moonpool. Would you like a warrior to escort you?" she asked. She was worried more for the medicine cat's sake of mind than her meeting anything dangerous; medicine cats were given the basic training of all warriors to defend themselves.

Jadepool shook her head. "No. But I can tell you will have one go with me anyway."

Sandpelt's whiskers twitched ever so slightly. "Yes. I will," she meowed. Turning her head, she meowed, "Thorntooth! Would you please accompany Jadepool to the moonpool?" The mottled brown-and-white tabby tom nodded. "Sure. When are we leaving?" he mewed, padding over with his bottlebrush tail held high in the air.
