cal didn’t have to go through what he did, because he was a coward. he didn’t fight for him as wren would’ve done if it were reversed, and cal’s betrayal had led him to embrace the dark side so completely. he doesn’t believe there’s any way back from this, and even if there were - most likely he wouldn’t take it. because he doesn’t have anything left except for the power and strength that the empire has given him.
as much as it hurts him, cal has become his enemy. and all enemies must be destroyed - unless they destroy him first. he doesn’t want to fight him, he doesn’t want to hurt him, despite what he’d done. even after he’d abandoned him and, essentially, left him to die, he doesn’t want to see him come to harm.
and that makes him weak. he knows it, and a part of him loathes it…while the other doesn’t. he just wants cal to go, so he doesn’t have to hurt him.
“you’re right. i don’t.” and he doesn’t think he ever will again.
his eyes narrow, slightly. “yes. they will.” and yet, he is not afraid of death…even if it means he is a failure. “even after what you did, i don’t want to hurt you.” a pause.
he cannot, will not, be lured in by cal’s words. they’re dangerous, but betraying the empire is more dangerous, and that is something he cannot do.
betraying the empire after what they gave him? impossible.
“i don’t want anything from you.”
as cruel as it is, cal made his choice when he was taken.
“and you can’t. there’s nothing you can do.” nothing he wants him to do. just as there is nothing he could say that would make wren change his mind. he does not trust cal, not anymore. nor does he believe him.
his hand still covers his wound, and he winces slightly as he moves. there are med droids back on the ship, if he can get back to them. failure is not an option here - but he would rather die in the fight than by execution because of failure.
and even though it hurts, he has to fight.
// aaaa this is actually terrible i’m sorry, i’m running on low fuel atm!! but i love it too!! :0

The amount of pain he feels is almost worse than when Wren had been taken in the first place. It's heart-wrenching, enough for Cal to screw his eyebrows together and have his lips drawn back. Wren's words feel as sharp as daggers, twisting and finding their mark in his skin.
His chest aches, and BD-1 beeps in mild concern nearby. He knows, all too well, what it means; are you okay? Should we go?
Wren moves and Cal knows he's slipping through his fingers. He's insistent, however, always has been. He surges forward and moves to get in the mans way, eyes wide in alarm, and extends his hands forward. His fingers strain, extending towards Wren, but he doesn't try to touch him again.
The plea is silent.
Wren has only been in front of him for a few minutes, after what feels like a lifetime of solitude. He wants to pick up his pieces and put him back together. Treat him as he is, fine china, meld him until he's no longer fragile. Until the cracks are sealed entirely, until it doesn't seem like he was broken at all in the first place.
Cal speaks, finally.
"They'll kill you," He says, even if it feels like he's been talking to a brick wall since he brought up the fact the other needs desperate medical attention. "Wren, you know this -- don't let your pride get you killed."
He tilts his head, just barely, with a small twitch of his lips. "Don't leave," He says, "If you leave, I'm going to follow you."
He knows it’s not his place, yet it makes him feel safer when the words fall from his lips. As if it actually gives him a chance of persuading Wren. He knows what the Empire is able to do, how they could brainwash people — he knew, internally, this isn’t the Wren back from Bracca.
Desperately, he wants it to be. He wants to see some piece of that man left behind, something the Empire hadn’t taken from him.
Something Cal hadn’t lost. He’s desperate for it.

he pauses as cal surges forward to get in his way - preventing him from leaving. and wren can’t do much, injured as he is from cal’s lightsaber and vulnerable. he could try to push past him, maybe even succeed, but it would be a painful walk back to his transport. it’s a silent plea from cal, and wren presses his lips together tightly, gazing at him warily. he doesn’t want to hurt him, deep down he knows this and yet he tries to fight against it. it’s an internal battle, feeling against his training and conditioning. doesn’t want to return a failure, either, but maybe that’s a better option even if it would mean execution. at least then…he wouldn’t be forced to hurt him. it’s no longer cal’s place to care about him, or what happens to him, after bracca. he’d made that clear enough.
“of course i know that.” he snaps, frustration spreading through him. it’s hard enough of a choice. “but it’s not as if it impacts you.” of course cal is going to be stubborn. he should’ve expected that, but it doesn’t make it any less annoying. he shakes his head, looking away for a moment, trying to think. his only option for getting out of here without having to hurt cal is if he runs.
but, when cal says he’ll follow him if he leaves, that option is quickly becoming less than appealing. “if you follow me, you have a death wish.” he nearly growls it - they’d kill him on sight if they saw him, and that’s not something he can allow to happen. as hurt, and as broken, as he is from bracca, there’s a piece of him that doesn’t want cal to get hurt, just as he doesn’t want him to die. the other berates himself for having those kinds of thoughts and feelings even after his training.
he’s changed since bracca, changed drastically from the person who was utterly oblivious to the power within him, the one who knew how to feel. why does this have to be so difficult? he’d never imagined something like this could occur when he was given the mission. he’s always been able to do his job, and do it well, quickly and efficiently. but suddenly he sees cal again and all of that is turned upside down.
“you can’t save me.” his eyebrows furrow. “you had that chance a long time ago.” the only other option he has is to fight until he can’t fight anymore - which may be sooner rather than later with his injury has made him vulnerable and weaker than he was before.
he lifts his chin, slightly. “if you aren’t going to let me leave, peacefully, then i have no choice but to fight you.” it’s a fight that he knows the odds aren’t in his favor, but at the very least he has to try. better to die fighting than die a failure.

“I made a mistake,” Cal says, knowing full well it’s an understatement. A mistake is forgetting to add an ingredient to dinner, slipping up on your words at the worst moment. A mistake isn’t letting the Empire take your only friend, all you felt you truly had at the time, away from you.
No — if that were on the level of a mistake to Cal, perhaps he’d understand why Wren would be so upset. It was more than that now.
It would have been a mistake if he maybe had tried to do something, or purposefully turned a blind eye. He hadn’t. In his shock, Cal remembered all too well how his tongue had gone numb, how he couldn’t even seem to lift a finger.
Perhaps it made sense. Cal’s past had come back, violently, to assault him and take the last of what he had. He had survived an attack meant to kill himself, and everyone he knew in training, and yet he had lived. Survivors guilt plagued his mind and crept up when he least expected it to. Seeing the Empire, so suddenly, in front of him that day — a brutal reminder of what he had lost — could you have blamed him?
It wasn’t an excuse. No, he couldn’t use this as an excuse. But he could try to explain.
“Bracca,” he says, quickly, as he knows his time here is running out. Wren isn’t going to stand around and listen to him all day, they both knew that. “On Bracca, Wren. That was the first place I’d ever felt safe in my life since I was a child. It was because of you.”
Wren speaks of attacking him and Cal doesn’t even make a move towards his lightsaber. His eyes are desperate, voice on edge. “I know I didn’t do anything back then,” he continues on, stepping closer, with a hand moving to extend towards the mans face. “I was so scared. And I watched myself lose you, and ever since then, I’ve watched it a thousand times over.”
His fingers reach, Cal yearning to touch him, and yet he doesn’t. Not yet. He doesn’t want to push too far, too quick.
“Don’t make me fight you,” and the way his voice breaks in the middle of that sentence is something Cal would have found embarrassing at any other time. However, he can only manage to focus on Wren in front of him. The icy air pricks at his hands, at his face, and perhaps he can use that as an excuse as to why his eyes well up with tears. ”Because I won’t. I won’t hurt you, Wren. I never will, not intentionally.” He means it, even if Wren thinks otherwise.
Cal reeks of desperation and yearning, this he knows. He has no shame in it now. All he’s wanted since leaving Bracca is back in front of him, and he doesn’t plan on giving that up so easily.
“Do you want me to beg?” He asks, and there’s no wit behind it. “I will. Wren — I will go through every single damn Empire base of it means I get to find you again.”
His hands move to his front, to clutch at Wren’s clothing this time. Oddly enough he has trust that the man isn’t going to attack him yet — though that may be a mistake, Cal judging much too quick.
“I’ll search the entire galaxy if I have to,” he whispers, “so don’t leave.”

he made so much more than a mistake. before bracca, he was on his own. an orphan, with very little to his name. he had no one. and then, with the guild, with the scrappers - when he found them, he found cal. and suddenly he’d had someone, someone who meant more to him than the entire galaxy. he’d believed in cal, he’d trusted him with his life and so much more. only to have that brutally ripped from him…joining the empire’s ranks rather than death and completely and utterly destroying who he used to be. or so he thought, until now. until cal, again - but this time it’s different. much different, and for the first time since the empire took him from bracca, all of his training, everything, he feels it slipping through his fingers. “i trusted you.” he said finally, after a beat of silence. “and you destroyed that trust. like it was nothing.” he’s not going to listen to any of cal’s excuses, because he knows he probably has some. and he doesn’t want to hear them.
he mentions bracca, and wren fights to keep his expression under control. the mention of the planet is terribly painful, because apart from when he was taken his memories there were good. he was safe. he doesn’t say anything, just watches cal - still warily. he doesn’t trust him. and how could he, after everything he went through? he sees cal’s desperation, and surprising himself he doesn’t move an inch when he steps closer. his heart beats faster, and it’s like he can’t tear his gaze from cal’s face even as the other’s hand extends toward wren’s face. “cal..” he whispers, just his name, and his stubbornness is wavering, as much as he hates it.
as much as he wishes he could…he doesn’t believe him when he says he wouldn’t hurt him. because he did, and even though it was so many years ago, the pain is still as sharp and as fresh, as crippling, as it was then. he doesn’t know if he’d ever be able to believe him again, even though it feels like it’s tearing him apart all over again. “i…i don’t….” most of it was a facade meant to protect himself - he can feel it crumbling now.
and that scares him, no, terrifies, him to death.
cal clutches at his clothing, and wren swallows thickly. he knows what he should do, what his training has taught him to do - take his lightsaber and use it the way he knows best. but he can’t. he blames the wind for how tears prick at the corners of his eyes. he can’t hurt cal. he can’t kill him. even after the agony, the sleepless nights, after everything he can’t bring himself to hurt him.
”i…the empire, cal, i cant-“ his voice is wavering, and he doesn’t know how much longer he can resist until it all shatters completely. it’s there, on his tongue. i’m not going anywhere. but he resists. he doesn’t say it. he’s trembling slightly, as his hands go to cal’s front, gripping his clothing as he’s doing with him.

Trust. That's something Cal seemed to give and take so easily these days, as much as he wouldn't like to. He went along with Cere and Greez because he hadn't had much of a choice back then, it was that or be put somewhere else the Empire would eventually find him. He met others along the way, and every step, it felt as if he had fought to get their trust. Ever since he lost Wren, he seemed to act in such a selfless manner.
He fought for his friends, he let the Empire attack him even though it meant he'd be hunted. He couldn't do it for Wren, and yet, what would have given them an escape then?
Cere, nor Greez wouldn't have been around for a quick exit off Bracca. They might have met their end together, or Cal alone, if he had covered for Wren.
Apart of him wishes he had, but he cannot focus on what he did not do. The past, he's learned, will come back to haunt you in any way possible. Survivors guilt or what he wishes to have done differently. There is no changing that now -- Wren in front of him is proof enough of that.
Cal's fingers tighten, cloth between and scrunched in his hand. He holds on tighter, while Wren's own grip on his facade began to slip. He exhales heavily, looking up at Wren with a pleading expression. His eyes are wide, lips pressed together nervously.
“The empire doesn't deserve you,” he says, and that's an understatement itself; the Empire should have never gotten their hands on someone like Wren. Not only was it wrong, it was almost an entire sin to see the man he once knew, now a puppet for the fascist regime. It was against everything they'd stood for back on Bracca. It was a fate worse than death.
Perhaps some sick part of him is twisted enough to be happy that Wren is alive, that Wren is a brain-washed puppet instead of dead. Selfish, unlike most of himself. Wren always seemed able to bring out apart of Cal he wasn't aware still remained. Selfish behaviours because he wanted Wren all to himself -- no one else -- at least at this moment.
No, the Empire doesn't deserve Wren. Cal knows that he doesn't, either -- but at least he'll keep Wren safe this time, where as they both knew the Empire wouldn't. Cal wouldn't hold him against his will. If Wren wanted to leave, depart from him and live somewhere freely away from the Empire, Cal would bring him there.
Even if that thought -- Wren living out a peaceful life, safe, without him. Even if that thought kills him inside. "And I know -- I know I don't either, I don't deserve you. But you -- you can't go back there."
He swallows, thick, and releases one of the handfuls of Wren's clothing he has. His hand moves up instead, to gently and gingerly cup the mans face. His eyes focus on Wren's. "Please. I just want you to be safe, even if you hate me.”

the situation he’s in is dangerous. his loyalty is being tested, and he’s never felt more conflicted than he is now. kriff, it’s all because he’s feeling things, feeling things he’s thought were long dead and gone. feelings are dangerous. feelings are weakness. but looking at cal now, that stubborn part of him can’t find it in himself to care about his training right now. even though he knows he should, with how they’d engrained it into every fiber of his being. for the first time, he’s at a loss of what to do. he doesn’t know, it’s too much, he can’t think. cal is here desperate, pleading, and everything within wren is aching. the sith is overwhelmed, torn between two things, cal and the empire, and he shouldn’t be. it should be the empire, through and through. unwavering loyalty.
he doesn’t speak, lips pressed together as cal holds onto him tighter. he has to fight. he has to. or make it seem like he went down fighting. he can’t walk away from the empire, not now. the loyalty runs too deep, and the training is like an override. he shakes his head, trying to soothe the tremor in his hands - he clings to the loyalty they’d given him like it was his lifeline. “cal, cal, i-“ he tries to find the words, but they come out a jumble of the jedi’s name.
his shoulders stiffen, muscles tensing, at the gentle and ginger touch of cal’s hand cupping his face, finds himself leaning into it on instinct, one of the only gentle ways he’s been handled since bracca. he groans, low in his throat, closing his eyes tightly for a moment to try and find something to steady him. “i can’t…i won’t choose. whether or not they deserve me, it - it doesn’t matter.” his voice breaks somewhere in the middle, but he continues on anyways. he has to.
“why won’t you fight me?” he whispers, swallowing hard. “it’s…it’s the only way.” the only other option would be to take him by force, and he doesn’t think cal has it in him to do that. “i would rather…rather have you be the last thing i see.” he doesn’t even realize tears had made tracks on his cheeks until they drip off of his chin. he doesn’t want to die. in fact, he’d really rather not. “i can’t give up my loyalty. you know this.”
wren has always been unwaveringly loyal. even to the empire, even though they’ve turned him into a monster. even though they are the reason his hands are bloodied. “please, cal.” he takes a chance, lets his forehead rest against cal’s as his grip on the jedi tightens. he doesn’t think he’ll ever be the same wren he was on bracca. he’s been broken and beaten far too many times.

Wren's voice, saying his name, in such a manner is near painful to listen to. The words that fall from the others lips are like knives to the heart, even in ways that Wren might not have meant them to be.
Once again, the Empire takes someone and breaks them. Even the strongest minds would falter and succumb to them -- there was no holding back. Their methods were painful, brutal, and tore every piece of the person you were beforehand apart. Cal could only imagine what Wren went through.
He doesn't want to. Knowing that Wren had been in such treatment was borderline agony on the man's heart -- knowing full well that maybe, he could have prevented that. It was his fault that Wren was taken, even if his reaction to the Empire showing up on Bracca had been expected.
He knew what he should have done, and yet, he did not have the strength to go through with it. So many lives lost, so much bloodshed; people he once viewed as friends, mentors, allies, turning on him. Aiming their blasters towards him, and pulling the trigger without mercy. The Empire worked in almost predictable ways each time.
People are not inherently evil, or so Cal would like to believe. Even people who've done the worst could be redeemed -- such as Trilla, or perhaps even Cere, from a certain point of view.
There are a million reasons he could tell Wren why he would not fight him. The Jedi Code being one -- Wren is weak, susceptible to brainwashing and going to die if he returns to the Empire. That seems like an insult to say out loud, however, and he does not think this is an appropriate time for the sort of banter they might have participated in back on Bracca. Instead, he closes his eyes briefly while their heads rest against one another, and his thumb moves to wipe away some of the spilling tears off the other mans cheek.
So he doesn't answer that question; not yet. Perhaps part of Wren already knows the reason why Cal refuses to fight him.
"You're not giving up your loyalty,” He whispers, "You're just returning it to where it once was."
His breath is soft, warm air exchanged in the little space between the two. Cere would begin to wonder where he was -- this wasn't supposed to take too long. He was supposed to find anymore information on the people of Zeffo, and report back to the two to continue their investigation further. They were hoping to at least try to take back this part of the planet from the Empire, even if it was seemed like it was literally four against the galaxy.
History is rich and something Cal would not give up so easily. People, are something Cal would not give up so easily. He refused, and learned to plant his feet in the ground. He was not the same man he was back on Bracca, for the better -- even if he knew the man before him, was the opposite.
He's still there. "You're still here with me, aren't you?” It's no more than a murmur, as if it's a secret exchanged between the two of them. "You're still there, Wren.”

he’s being torn apart. a part of him doesn’t want to go with cal, because he doesn’t trust him. the other part, the one that wonders what it would be like to be free, kind of does - and that terrifies him. would he really give up his standing with the empire, turning his back on his training and his mentors? he doesn’t know, and he’s confused. his loyalty back on bracca had been with cal, because he was everything he had at that time. now, after his reconditioning, it lies with the empire, the people that destroyed him rather than the person who betrayed him. he doesn’t want to go through what happened those years again, and it’s his mistrust of cal that makes him wary to believe anything he says.
but he also doesn’t want to be a monster, and that’s exactly what the empire formed him into. it’s something he can never come back from - the scars from his training run deep, deeper than the scars littered across his skin. he may not trust cal, but that doesn’t mean he wants to hurt him, or have him follow him back to his transport and get himself killed.
he’s running out of time. he needs desperate medical attention, and without it he’ll die here on zeffo, whether he fights or not. they’re going to start wondering where he’d went - this was supposed to be simple, it was supposed to be easy. but it’s turned out to be nothing but pain. nevertheless…he has to return before they go looking for him, before they find him with cal and kill him on sight. he doesn’t answer, because he thinks cal already knows.
“cal…go.” he whispers, reaching up to roughly wipe his tears away, hating that he’d allowed himself to cry. he looks at cal firmly - he’s not going to take no for an answer, stubbornness or not. “they’re going to come for me. you can’t let them see you.” he won’t let him get hurt. he can’t.
the blood loss makes him woozy, unsteady on his feet. his grip on cal slackens, his injury sapping much of his strength. still, he manages to gently push cal in the direction he’d come from. “go. please.” he lost cal once, and now he’s going to lose him again. he swallows the lump that rises in his throat. darkness swims at the edge of his vision, and he knows he doesn’t have long before he’s going to pass out.
“just-“ he can’t say anything else, however, because it seems his injury has finally caught up to him, and he crumples as he passes out, far too weak to keep himself awake any longer.
// i hope this is alright!! i figured wren would be too stubborn to go with cal willingly haha

The wound is worse than Cal thought, perhaps. The man pushes him away and Cal looks at him with a heart-torn expression, lips parting to once again tell him no, before noticing how Wren seems to have been barely holding himself up. Had he been using Cal as support that entire time? Had Cal been so focused on trying to convince him, he hadn’t even noticed the blood seeping onto his hands?
He lunges as soon as Wren crumples. He’s not quick enough to catch the man entirely, instead dropping to his knees to catch him by the front. That’s better than letting Wren face-plant into dirt.
BD-1 releases a few concerned noises, which Cal could roughly translate to, “what was that?” After months of learning BD-1 talk.
“We’re gonna help him.” Cal says, moving Wren to haul the mans front against him. He adjusts so he can drape Wren over his knee, and slide his arms under the man. He manages to get up straight, carrying Wren bridal style.
Then he’d realize he’s going to have to walk all the way back to the ship with Wren like this. A rough sigh falls from his lips. If anything, he’s just glad that Jedi training, as well as his time on Bracca, gave him the body strength to do this.
It takes him longer than he’d like to admit either way — he’s careful with his steps, and BD-1 hovering over his shoulder curiously doesn’t help. Empire stormtroopers wait in their typical positions to cut him off, and Cal uses the force to throw them aside or simply push his way through, protecting Wren as much as he could. They shout orders and commands to one another, alarmed at the sight of Cal “kidnapping” an Inquisitor.
He makes it to the ship. As usual, Cere and Greez would be waiting on the Mantis for him, even if they’re both visibly alarmed at the sight of Wren. Cere’s lips part to question if Cal is holding an inquisitor, and for a moment, Greez doesn’t want to let him on with Wren. Cal argues — he’s stubborn, he always is. They don’t have the time to stand around and fight about it, with Empire troops already rushing to their location to try and figure out why one of their Inquisitor‘s was being taken by a Jedi.
As soon as he steps a single foot onto the ship, he’s heading back to the common area. Merrin comes over to assist, while Cal works to rip open the clothing around Wren’s wound. The ship starts up within a minute or so afterwards, Cere giving Cal a look that would typically make the hairs on back of his neck stand on end while she heads to the cockpit. He can’t help but ignore her for now, focusing on Wren instead.
Lightsabers will typically sterilize the wounds from the intense heat they give off, and cauterizes them if you’re lucky to live with a lightsaber wound. Judging by the seeping blood, Wren wasn’t that lucky at this time. The burn is rough and it takes a while for Cal to get it looking better, for Wren not to look so pale.
Wren is bandaged up, after nearly an hour and a half of improvised surgery with the help of Merrin. Once he’s stable enough that Merrin assures he probably won’t die while unconscious, Cal takes him to the sleeping quarters so he can continue his rest back there.
He sets Wren’s fragile form down. It takes him a moment for him to slip the mans lightsaber from his hip, setting it on the workbench nearby. He eventually moves to take a seat on the floor near the bed, back against the quarters, a heavy sigh falling from his lips. He rubs a hand over his face, eyes closing, and he would stay like that until Wren showed any sign of life.
(( you’re absolutely fine! I hope this was ok too c:
