what on earth had gotten this cat's fur in such a bunch!, batpaw wondered, forcing himself to keep his ears from pinning against his head. "well, if you cared to ask, i'd tell ya' that totemclan's frozen over more often than not, and i don't think any herbs can keep'a cat from gettin' hypothermia, now can they?" batpaw's nub of a tail twitched pointedly as he concluded. "an' no, i wasn't guided by anycat in the sky. i don't believe'n that nonsense. i decided to be a healer all by myself, i don't need a ghost to tell me what ta' do." he shrugged, his indifference reflected in the gesture. he'd always thought starclan to be an elders' tale.

paintpaw shrugged at the inquiry. "it just makes it all the better when the sun does come out. you ought to see it; every cat in totemclan is out and about!" they had watched totemclan grow in size even in their small pawful of moons living there. paintpaw liked the clan well enough; there were plenty of apprentices to befriend, and paintpaw had known tinypaw before they'd been found by the totemclan patrol, so they weren't completely alone in the clan. paintpaw listened to laurelpaw's description of her siblings with wide eyes - they could not imagine growing up alongside so many siblings! harespring looked to be a strong warrior, paintpaw noted as they followed laurelpaw's gesture towards her mentor. "wow, he looks tough! my mentor is chiaseed, over there - the small molly, with the stripes and the white feet." they twitched their ears in their mentor's direction. "i like her a lot. some of the other apprentices have much stricter mentors. like kiyipaw, his mentor is ficusfrown, and he barely talks!" paintpaw looked incredulous at the idea of learning under a cat who spoke few words. "i've only been an apprentice for a moon, but chiaseed already taught me all the best stalking techniques! she's quiet as a mouse when she hunts." paintpaw beamed with pride as they spoke of their mentor. "oh! oops, i thought i cleaned it all off before we left," paintpaw looked sheepish as they realized they were still smattered with their art medium. "it's my paints - the red is mostly raspberries and poppy leaves, the green is mostly a grass poultice. i make the paint out of stuff i find, and then i turn them into artworks. totemclan has a really big lake right next to it and a lot of flat stones wash up - that's what i paint on!" they were lively as they chattered about their hobby, gesturing as they spoke.
"oh, no, no interruption!" baldstar reassured pinefoot hastily, settling down in the sand and tucking his tail close to his body to avoid being stomped on by stray paws. "none of that 'sir' stuff, please, just baldstar is enough," he smiled gently, hoping to reassure this nervous tomcat. "you were just made deputy? you must have spent many moons serving for your clan then?" he was aware of pinefoot's greying face, but would never outright ask him if he'd rather be retired. "totemclan's camp has a cliffside to the west; that's where our nursery, elders, and healers reside. i find it to be the safest part of the camp."

sealfisher's eyes grew marginally wider with every additional kit failnaughtfire named. "oh, yes, this is my first," he nodded. "i have two daughters and even they are a pawful - how do you do it with so many!?" the tomcat looked impressed by failnaughtfire's ability to father so many without being overwhelmed. even just with the pair of kits he had now, sealfisher sometimes found himself in over his head.
wizard; healer; tom; 35m; tagged: swanflight of tundraclan
wizard beamed at swanflight's praise; it was not often that another cat thought his bizarre way of living and teaching was cool, so he would take compliments where they were given. "oh, how delightful! i don't believe i've made duke's acquaintance, though if his fashion sense has anything to say, i'm sure we'd be wonderful friends," he purred with a chuff of laughter. "how does tundraclan fare? i hope greenleaf is treating you well?"

chiaseed listened to nectarinesplash's tale with interest, her ears perked towards the hairless molly and her eyes perpetually on the other's. "oh, my," chiaseed murmured after the story had concluded, eyes wide. "that does sound terrible; i understand why many cats would be eager to leave." her fur felt like it was tingling where nectarinesplash was touching her. "and you? how did you find your clan?" she pictured her own long journey to finding totemclan, with the head-high piles of snow that made the journey all the more difficult.
scrapbeak; warrior; molly; 23m; tagged: pebblepaw of spruceclan
scrapbeak blinked at the eight-and-a-half-moon apprentice before her, looking as if she'd just been bonked in the head with a rock or something equally heavy and undesirable. she had not expected so many questions to barrage out of pebblepaw's mouth. "slow your roll, kid," she placated the multitude of questions, giving herself a moment to actually process the words. "i'm scrapbeak, from totemclan, and i've never... measured myself? and i'm taller than you, sure, but i'm not that tall. you should see some of the other cats... like there - " she pointed with her nose at a particularly lanky oriental who padded by who towered over herself. "and the weather's the same. don't believe that old myth," she chuckled, eyeballing this molly who - despite scrapbeak's better wishes - was honestly quite endearing. "you wanna be friends with me? don't you want to, i don't know, talk to the apprentices or something?"
tinypaw; apprentice; demiboy (he/they); 8m; tagged: verglaspaw of evergreen park
"twolegs are weird," tinypaw agreed, nodding vigorously. "fires? dogs!?" the last word came out as more of a squeak, and their eyes widened with the thought of living so close to canines. "they'd eat me right up! i wouldn't be fast enough to outrun them" he wiggled a small leg solemnly. "but i can climb like nobodies' business!" they looked reassured at the idea they'd be able to climb away from the vicious creatures, but they definitely didn't want to ever come nose to nose with a pack of dogs.
