CAI "LEI" LANLEI !
𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 𝐌𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏 𝐌𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐌𝐘 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃
slow motion by florindentNOTHING truly prepared lei for that day, and perhaps it was meant to be. not that lei truly believed in fate, or the impending nature of destiny. what he did believe when he exited his apartment that morning was he needed something to wake him up. like all other mornings.
indentand nothing truly changed in lei's day to day life, all seven days of the week blurred into one— minus saturday, where he didn't work or attend lectures at the university. even then, all he did was sit on the couch of his newly bought apartment and swipe through shows he'd already seen (and hated!) at least three times. lei truly craved for something more than what he had, something that he'd never seen before.
indenttoo bad lei'd thought he'd seen it all, in fact, he saw the impossible. every day, every moment of his life, he could see otherworldly creatures. animals that normal humans couldn't fathom to see. lions with angel's wings and wolves made from water vapour. sometimes lei thought he was lucid dreaming when he placed foot in front of foot walking to the bus station or to work. he enjoyed seeing the creatures amble around the town as if they belonged there, and as if the people around them could see these mythical beings. lei thought they all looked beautiful in one way or another.
indentthe worse part of lei's mondays were the morning shifts at his job. his job paid part time, let lei get by without having to bother his foster parents too much. perhaps he shouldn't have moved out, but then he wouldn't be able to attend the university that was still worlds away from lei's house. he trudged through streets, finding his way into the teen's retail shop. which really shouldn't be open until twelve, because that was when people actually started to come into the store.
indentthe shop itself was fairly modest, but had a modern touch to accentuate the feeling being a teenager. the floor was made out of cold cement, and the thin boards of wood camouflaged with dark grey iron frames to create shelves. the walls were also raw concrete, but neon lights and wall plants made it look less bare. lei shouldn't be stealing a part time job from a teenager, he supposed, and he probably looked ages too old to be working there. he should be really be getting sleep before his seminars started.
indentclocking in, lei started to restock some empty shelves, careful not to tip everything over. the shop wasn't his most desired part-time career, but it beat working at mcdonalds, flipping fries or something along those lines. no one came into the shop during the mornings, that's how it always was. lei liked it that way, if he was honest. time just passed slower, and that was the bigger problem.
indenthe sat at the register, alone without his coworker-slash-mutual to keep him company. lei looked up to the wall across from him, staring at the minimalist's iron clock. time passed painstakingly slow on monday morning shifts.
indenta flicker of something outside the door caught lei's eyes, making him sit up straighter in his swivel chair at the register, and he stared intently through the window. and he saw it once again. something dark, but somehow translucent, something mythical. lei'd seen nothing like it before, and that was when he realised something terribly wrong was about to unfold.
indentthe shadow-figure came closer to lei, and his heart started pounding in his chest. it seemed to stare into his soul, clenching his heart, which burned so fiercely, the male was scared that it would burst.
indentcautious, lei stepped out to the parking lot behind the shop, asking the other worker to step back inside to man the register for a few minutes, as he needed to "catch some fresh air". the other agreed, letting lei figure out what was going on. the shadow-figure seemed to exude evil, and that was the last thing that lei needed in that moment. but before he could decide what to do, the shadow figure appeared behind a parked sedan in front of lei, an ominous smirk seeminly snarling at him.

fly..fly me to the moon.....
Let me play among the stars
xxxx SU Yuqing tilted his head slightly, watching the ghost struggle on the dirty floor, it's dreadfully battered humanoid figure flashing in opacity. Slowly, he walked towards it before squatting in front of it. His hands carelessly swiping the bangs out of his eyes, revealing the disdain and disgust flashing through them. At the same time as he moved closer, the figure, somehow finding the strength in it's gruesome near disappearing state, thrashed more violently, with what can be perceived as pure fear and hate seen on it's barely complete face covered in blackened ooze.
xxxx"tsk, you little thing, so excited to see me coming?" Yuqing chuckled, reaching his hand out in front of its face. The figure froze, and within a few seconds, the repulsing figure was no more. As it vanished, a flicker of pleasure lit in Yuqing's eyes, perfectly blended through the disdain. He took a deep breath, slightly lolling his head backward, before breaking his squat. He staggered a little, before reaching the wall of the alleyway for support. If anyone were there at that moment, they would've seen that he was shaking ever so slightly. Yuqing closed his eyes, his dark brows furrowing before suddenly punching the cement wall with his gloved hand over and over again until his gloves were tattered and covered in his blood.
xxxx"ayo, su~ you coming? what's taking you so long?" A sweet voice singed out from around the corner, breaking the silence in the empty alley.
xxxxYuqing separated from the wall, pulling off his glove, glancing at it as it disintegrated. He cracked his neck, combed his hair back with his hands, and put on a charming smile. "aish, be patient, im coming!"
Let me see what spring is like
xxxxA loud crash rang through the little coffee shop, breaking Yuqing from his daze. His muscles tightened, warily glancing away from his laptop screen towards the direction of the sound, before relaxing and giving a quick nod to the coffee shop worker who was apologizing to everyone she disturbed by knocking over a coffee mug. He took a sip of his bitter coffee, before going back to his laptop. The ticking sound of the clock above his head clear and precise, every tick becoming a drum in his heart. tick. tock. tick. tock.
xxxxSuddenly, his phone ringed, and Yuqing's whole body stiffened. He glanced at it, reading the caller information. Seeing who it is, he groaned before picking it up, an eyebrow raised. "what does that old man want this time? Wait, no, stop, I don't want to hear it. I'm on break. " Yuqing grunted, hanging up on the call. After hanging up, he smiled, sitting straight and sipping his coffee again. The ticking sound of the clock was suddenly not so pressing, and his coffee tasted so much richer and sweeter. Thank god it was only 304. He closed his eyes, letting out a sigh, enjoying the heavenly aroma that's circulating in the small cafe- a mix of the bitter coffee and the sweet and salty baked goods, as well as the light music in the background. This must be heaven, no job, no life, no work, no annoying old man.
xxxxAt least, it was heaven until he opened up his eyes again, as this time, there was a man sitting in the chair across from him with his elbows propped up on the table, staring with amusement. The man looked to be around thirty years of age, dressed weirdly in a blend of european and asian old fashioned clothing. Yuqing's blissful expression froze, his right eye twitching.
xxxx"why look so dead all of a sudden? I thought you were enjoying yourself. please, continue." The man laughed, leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed. Yuqing looked at him, a million phrases running through his mind. They made eye contact, and Yuqing, suppressing the urge to beat him up, did what only intellectuals could do. He stared emotionlessly into the man's eyes, held eye contact while packing his laptop at lightning speed, before grabbing his backpack and bolting. The man, seemingly completely expecting this reaction, was only caught off guard by a second before jumping over the table and chasing after him.
xxxxYuqing jumped on the tables, running across the less obstructed paths and throwing the occasional chair in front of the man. Oddly, with this much commotion, the customers seemed to have not noticed their presence. As he got to the door, yuqing opened it, panting, before turning around and throwing a talisman at the incoming man's face, along with the free gift of an erect middle finger. "i f-ing said I was on break, you bastards"
xxxxJust as Yusqing turned to leave, he was met face to face with another man, this time, a classier one, dressed in a black suit. Cussing under his breath, Yuqing grunted. "alright, alright alright, i get it, what is it this time? must be important, or else they wouldn't have sent both you and 304"
xxxx"su, we apologize for taking away from your break, but we really do need you for this mission. It is an emergency."
xxxxYuqing's brows furrowed, his finger tapping the table in frustration. "This is such a big thing, why have we only just heard of it!?" The man in the suit, more commonly known as bing, flinched slightly at the anger in yuqing's eyes. "it was a moderation mistake in the west region, the patrol leader in that region stated that he was caught off guard."
xxxx"More than ten people missing, with it being by a level 5 ghoul, and headquarters are only notified now? a moderation mistake?! What the hell is the patrol over there on!?" Yuqing spat out.
xxxx "ha, off guard my ass, i will give you my head if he hasn't already known" 304 scoffed, "that son of a lizard will cover anything to make his record pretty. told him so many times to not f- with these things, look now how that turned out for 'm"
xxxx Yuqing massaged his temples, trying to relieve himself of this headache to no avail. "Which city is it? tell the old man i'll see to it."

𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 𝐌𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏 𝐌𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐌𝐘 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃
slow motion by florindentSTARTLED by the monster in front of his face, lei screamed a shrill note, eyes widening in surprise as the shadow's bright eyes bore holes into his face. "is everything... okay?" his coworker asked, opening the door ever so slightly. lei must've looked like a madman, his eyes wide, and hands covering his mouth. "um.. yeah, everything's okay. the condo lady must've screamed." he replied, giving a lopsided smile. the other gave an unsure smile before closing the door.
indentwith the little conversation, the shadow creature slinked away, and lei sighed a breath of relief, sitting on the kerb in the back of the parking lot, his head in his hands as he massaged his temples. almost nothing phased the male, and seeing the unfamiliar face of evil scared him. lei didn't know who to ask about the mysterious creature, they'd all think he was insane. it made him shrink in fear. what if the shadow was true evil? and if so, what did it want? he didn't know himself, but he knew it was no good.
indentlei felt himself shrinking further into his own world, his head throbbing in pain from the amount of worry and confusion that he felt in his heart. the male felt helpless, and he didn't know why it hurt to even conjure a single thought. the creatures never hurt him, they lived in their own lives and ignored the humans around them completely. lei knew they were all harmless, and they were engrossed in their own worlds, one where humans didn't affect them. so why was there an other-worldly creature that seemingly harmed lei? he didn't know himself.
indentbefore he could figure out an at-least-plausible answer, his heartstrings felt as if they were about to break again. lei took his hands off his eyes, his vision completely blackened. he wasn't sure what was happening to him, but a voice in the back of his head screamed garbled words of panic, and the pang in his chest only throbbed more and more, as if it was exponential. lei tried to shout another cry for help, but his words too, were muddled, and he was sure no one could hear him.
indentthe shadow wrapped around lei's body, swirling and morphing, tightening around lei's body. the black substance felt metallic, yet... soft, and malleable when lei bit into it, trying to shock it, as his limbs felt numb. the male knew he was ultimately doomed, but it didn't hurt to give a fight. the pounding in lei's ears started to turn into something more, a cacophony of pots and pans, screams and cries. lei didn't know what came over him, perhaps it was the sleepless nights he spent working overtime, or the ones where he spent furiously typing out a credible thesis for a paper he didn't give a single crap about.
indentas soon as he tried to struggle, the shadow-morpher shot a shadow into his left rib, the almost-metal substance piercing his skin, creating a blooming pain in his abdomen. lei gibberish-screamed again, wanting to throw up, but as someone with common sense, he knew that was probably not the best outcome. he instead brought his numbed hand, and smashed it into the shadow, feeling the object in his rib crack.
indentthe shadow roared in anger, or perhaps it was only lei's eardrums and the adrenaline pulsing through his veins. it shrieked into lei's ears, a cry so shrill, lei felt his eyes burning slightly. lei blinked away the pain, and instead of the same black vision he'd seen for the past three minutes or so, he saw the stark colour of the monster's eyes. it seemed to snarl, or even worse, smirk again, laughing at lei's expense and the growing pain in his ribcage.
indentlei tried screaming again, his voice coming clear, but fell short. his throat felt hoarse and used, as if he had screamed fifty times more. the shadow's eyes flickered, burning into lei's own as lei screamed again in pain.
indenthe knew better to blink, but once lei closed his eyes, the feeling of pain dissipated, and the male felt alone, lulled into false protection, as if the dissonance in his ears faded away, and everything was okay again.
indentalthough his eyes were shut, a hazy memory fluttered into his gaze. a swing on a tree on the top of a lush green hill. lei stood in front of said swing, and he saw himself, a younger, more carefree, happier version of himself. the child sat on the swing, his eyes seemingly empty— lei wasn't sure if they were or not, but he somehow could feel it. the child swung himself into the air, legs kicking in the air, a smile on his face, but his eyes held a blank stare. before lei could do anything, the younger version of himself started swinging himself higher and higher, and wings sprouted from his back. he gasped, watching the kid fly higher and higher into the air on the swing before he let go of the rope, the wings fluttering on the child's back. and only then, lei realised it wasn't a memory, but a figment of his imagination. he tried to open his eyes, but they stayed shut as the child's wings dematerialised into thin air and a few memento feathers. the older male screamed, trying to catch the small one, but his arms missed, and the younger lei fell down the hill, which suddenly seemed like a cliff into an abyss. lei shouted for the child, his younger self stayed silent, and the older peered over the cliff only to see the same black colour as the shadow.
indentas soon as the vignette ended, lei's eyes were forced open, and the shadow's cold bright eyes once again smiled, this time crueler than the last. the male didn't know what he'd just experienced, but he knew it meant no good for him. he was no longer in pain, and his ribcage hurt far less than a minute ago. lei just wanted answers, and he had an inkling that the shadow knew them.

BANG!
xxxxA loud crash from inside the room caused the devils trying to listen in through the doors to jerk their heads away.
xxxx"that has to be the third time in the last hour!" A short, sweet-looking girl whispered, shaking a bit in fear as she paced along the hallway. "He is super angry. You think Su is alright?"
xxxxBing loosened his tie a bit before pulling it back up, his eyes glancing uneasily at the closed wooden doors. "He's alright." He concluded after staying silent for a few seconds.
xxxx"Oh please, you guys worry too much!" 304 scoffed, "Old man is just throwing the stuff around to save his face. Also, Su didn't do anything wrong, did he? He is just here to accept the mission, so why the hell would that old man be mad at Su? If he had to be enraged, it would be at those good for nothings."
xxxxThe little girl seemed to be relieved for a while, before biting her nails again. "He didn't do anything wrong yet, but Su's mouth..."
xxxxThe three of them looked at each other in silence.
xxxx"He'll be fine."
xxxxInside the room, a man stood in the core of shattered china and scattered papers. The man looked to be about fifty in age, his back straight and eyes sharp. At this moment, the man's keen, intimidating eyes locked angrily onto the handsome man who sat on the couch.
xxxxYuqing leaned forward, grabbing the almost translucent jadeite teacup on the coffee table in front of him, before leaning back, crossing his legs. He fiddled with the teacup with one hand while he glanced at the man panting behind the antique desk, his eyes full of amusement. Yuqing took a sip of it before grinning, slowly pouring it onto the plant on the table. His hand was carefreely held high, yet the tea hit the center of the plant with great accuracy. The reddish-green leaves of the plant recoiled under the hot tea, before seemingly sensing something and returning to its original state. Yuqing chuckled, putting the cup, now empty, down on the coffee table again with a thump. It wasn't a loud noise, yet in the near-silent room with the only other sound being the elaborated breathing from the man behind the desk, it seemed to pierce through the air.
xxxxHe looked at the man, one of his dark eyebrows raised. "Hey, old man. Are you finished releasing your anger? Can we have a regular conversation now?"
xxxx"You----" The man started before pausing and sighing. He waved it off, now taking on the role of a caring elder. "Yuqing, I need you on this mission, you know the right thing to do."
xxxxYuqing scoffed, "I know you need me on this mission, Mr. Grazie, but I also know that I need to see those bastards punished."
xxxxGrazie furrowed his brows, thinking for a moment before sighing again, shaking his head, helpless. "I've already told you before, his father is--"
xxxx"And I have told you that I don't give a damn about who his father is." Yuqing interrupted, "Punish him, or if it's too much trouble for you to do so publically, give me the thing, I'll do it myself." He glanced at Grazie, satisfaction flashing through his eyes as he sees that the man's expression was wavering. "It won't trace back to here." he paused, smiling for a bit as he turned his head to meet Grazie's gaze. "You know how I deal with things."
xxxxThe man clenched the report in his hand before throwing it onto the table. He looked down one last time at the name at the top of the now scrunched up paper before finally looking back at Yuqing. "I'll give you the badge. Like always, 300. Take it and leave."
xxxxYuqing laughed, the clean, charming sound resonating within the room. "Look how serious you are! You need to smile more often." He picked up the shining teacup again, admiring it's glow as the sunlight hit its surface. "It's all for the people, isn't it?"
xxxxSeeing Grazie's bitter face, he chuckled again as he walked towards the closed wooden doors, his jacket draped over his shoulder. Just as Yuqing was about to push it open, he turned back and grinned at the man who now sat in the chair behind the desk.
xxxx"Have a nice week, be sure to carry an umbrella with you, as it is going to be a tad... rainy."
xxxxThe jadeite teacup on the coffee table toppled around on its base unbalanced after being set down. The sun's rays shone through the intricately carved wooden window splitting with its movement. The man looked up from his desk, alertly focusing on the teacups movement. It's opaque, gleaming figure swiveling once, twice, almost toppling the third time. Grazie held his breath, his eyes locked onto the teacup.
xxxxIt regained its balance, sitting perfectly still in the sunlight.
xxxxYuqing squinted at the bright sunlight, trying to make out the name on the tattered green street sign. After a few seconds of nearly going blind, he finally sees it.
xxxx"Fourth Avenue," He muttered, a gleam appearing in his eyes as he saw the name. "Death avenue, huh?" Yuqing chucked under his breath before making some signs with his right hand that previously rested within his spacious jacket pocket. Immediately a cloud, like mist and fog yet somehow different, formed surrounding Yuqing's face.
xxxxLater asking the people on Fourth Avenue that day, everyone seemed to agree that they vaguely remember a man that fits the description. However, for some peculiar reason, there was not one person who can describe his features.
xxxxHe checked his watch. Reading that it was only noon, he sighed in relief. He glanced at the sky, at the sun shining directly above their heads. Yuqing looked behind, at the busy crowds, the cars coming and going on the road, the smell and sounds of life. The sidewalk he stood on tattered and chipped - marks eroded into its being through the many years of busy city life.
xxxx"Death avenue, huh?"
In other words
xxxxYuqing knocked on the green garbage disposal in the alley behind a quiet restaurant. There was no response the first two times, but there was no sign of annoyance on Yuqing's face at all. The third time Yuqing's knuckles made contact with the metal, a gruff voice sounded.
xxxx"damnit, I swear, I will kill all of you one day."
xxxx"Hello," he stated, staring at the center of the garbage disposal. After a few seconds of silence, the garbage disposal suddenly opened from the center, a small man waddling out on his short, stubby legs.
xxxx"I hope you are doing well," Yuqing stated, waving off the man's bow, giving one in return before handing him the jade plaque badge that Grazie had previously given him.
xxxx"If it isn't too much of a bother, thank you."
xxxxAlthough Yuqing stated it as if the man had any choice, they both knew that the only option that the man had was to obey his commands. Sham, but society does need to be covered by a film of hypocrisy.
xxxx"Of course, of course, no bother at all, it is my honor to aide you, sir."
xxxxYuqing smiled, his eyes crinkling into shining crescents.
xxxxThe small man held a bow, his eyes slightly looking up, nervously following the handsome figure as it slowly moved out of his line of sight. He waited a minute or so after the bright pink wrinkled t-shirt was out of sight before daring to stand up straight, letting out a deep breath that he didn't dare to breathe beforehand.
xxxxThe garbage disposal closed with a clank. The quiet ally returned to its original tranquil state as if no one has never stepped foot there ever before.
xxxxYuqing slid his glove over his right hand, his brows furrowed at the dark, sour-smelling fog that swallowed the space. He closed his eyes for a split second, and by the next time he had his eyes open, his gloved hand shot out, and with it, the dark fog recoiled, hissing as it tried to overpower the invisible force that was driving it away. Yuqing twisted his body, flipping to the left before forcing out his right hand again. This time, the black fog took shape, a humanoid, eery figure, radiating disgusting stench that causes Yuqing to wrinkle his nose. Its dark eyes glared at him before shooting a shadow spike in his direction.
xxxxYuqing chucked, raising his eyebrows, not even moving or flinching an inch at the attack. "Oh~ it's a shadow morpher. No wonder they sent me." As the spurt of fog shot closer to his face, Yuqing finally raised his hand. As he did, the near-invisible beam stopped immediately - as well as the figure controlling it. The fury in its stark eyes oozing out as it struggled to move under an unseen force. At this, Yuqing smirked, his eyes sly and full of disdain, like a proud fox looking at his prey.
xxxxSuddenly, Yuqing's pupils trembled, as, at this time, he spotted a figure encased within the shadows. He immediately prodded out two fingers into the air, a talisman forming in the air amidst his fingers' movements, before pulling his hand back and pushing it at the ghoul. Within seconds, the dark fog was broken and expelled, disintegrating into the night. The ghoul, meanwhile, had the talisman stuck on it with a hiss. The shadow figure glared in Yuqing's direction one last time, before escaping into the background. Through all this commotion, however, all of Yuqing's attention was on the boy in his arms. Feeling his pulse and body heat, Yuqing let out a breath of relief.
xxxx"Thank the f-ing gods I didn't come any later," he muttered, his hands roaming around on the young man's body, checking for serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. Yuqing's brows furrowed as his hand reached the boy's ribs, pausing before quickly tearing away the material covering the area. It was almost pitch dark, yet Yuqing's hand found the wound with surprising accuracy. He pulled off his glove before covering the area with his hand, slowly feeding his energy into the boy, feeling the hot flow of blood underneath his skin.
xxxxYuqing could tell he was in pain, and out of nowhere, maybe because of how small and fragile the boy felt, maybe because he reminded him of someone, as he urged the flow of energy into the boy's body, his eyes softened.
xxxx"shh... it's all ok now," he whispered gently, repetitively, "it won't hurt anymore, you're safe now."

𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 𝐌𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏 𝐌𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐌𝐘 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃
slow motion by florindentMONSTERS and demons never appeared in the world that lei was only aware of— and he realised, perhaps this whole time, the schizophrenia that everyone he knew assumed he had was not true, but it was the cruel reality of the world. after all, he truly felt the pain in his rib, and he'd always been able to reach out to the animals that no one else could see. lei gasped in pain as he touched his wound, seeing the blackish-red blood flowing from the stab wound. he didn't take the shadowy material out of the wound and instead shouted a pained "why?!"
indentthe shadow-monster never responded, and its bright-yet-evil eyes glared at lei as if to tell him to shut up. the male tried to move his limbs once again but the monster created a snarling noise and he stopped squirming in the uncomfortable position. "at... at least tell me what that was." lei huffed, almost annoyed at the shadow-monster for dragging him into this situation. if it wasn't for the shadow, lei's rib would still be fine, and it would just be another day at the store.
indent"in time, you shall know. your destiny is already chosen for you," the monster replied stiffly. its voice was gruff and gravelled as if it hadn't been used for centuries or millenniums. the words it spoke didn't click with lei, and he felt his head turning on itself. he neither understood what this meant or liked what it inferred, but seemed as if lei would be doomed to an undeniably horrible fate. or maybe his past had already granted said fate. he'd never know.
indentbefore he could conjure another thought or a conclusion, the monster spoke once more, "i have spoken enough. you shall soon meet your fate."
indentand in the blink of an eye, lei had somehow transported from the insides of a shadow monster to the arms of a stranger. said stranger somehow untangled lei from the grasps of the monster, and lei felt as if he was being ripped away from a great burden, and said burden had left his body. he exhaled slowly, a raggedy breath too shallow to fill his lungs that in turn hurt lei's ribs.
indenttheir words were soothing, but almost strained. lei didn't dare to open his eyes, his whole body felt sore and heavy, as if a great boulder had struck him down and hit his left rib. which on further inspection, hurt much less, as if some force was healing it.
indentlei, exhausted, went back to sleep in the arms of the mysterious stranger and somehow forgot about the whole incident, too tired and confused to understand what had happened to him. the man never had a good memory anyway.
indenthe woke up in a bed with ruffled linen sheets and sunshine in his eyes. lei exhaled, feeling the cold air of an aircon machine hitting his bare chest. lei didn't know how he ended up at a hotel, but he knew that nothing bad must've happened, yet his rib felt as if it was on fire. lei scrambled to his feet, trying to find his belongings, his phone— anything.
indentthe noise of a shower faucet turning off caught the male off guard, and he realised that he should put on his shirt, if someone else was already in the other room. he found a crisp white button-up shirt in one of the drawers of the hotel's dressers. he deemed it complementary, and shrugged the fabric on. he buttoned his clothes and waited for the other person to get out of the shower first before they could speak.
indent"hey," lei said, sitting on the side of the bed that faced the window, glancing at the other person. "sorry for yesterday. or whatever," he continued, unsure of what to say. the man across the room gave him a strange look, something along the lines of 'are you doing okay?' or 'what is wrong with this man?' lei decided on the latter, and instead shut his mouth, unsure of what to say. he had short black hair and piercing eyes with chiselled features. something about the mystery man made lei even more curious than he was before, and he wanted to unravel all of the other's mysteries.
indentthe male came to the conclusion the other didn't want to speak about what had happened, and lei instead frowned and fiddled with his thumbs. an awkward silence fell over the two, blanketing lei's many thoughts and worries for himself. he opened his mouth and then closed it, trying to start a conversation, anything to know what he'd gotten himself into.
indent"so what happened to my rib?" he finally settled on, trying not to upset the other. he placed a hand over the gaping hole in his stomach. lei wasn't good with reading emotions all too much, but he knew that the other must've known something, as lei didn't remember what had happened during what he assumed was 'yesterday' and in the current time.
indentlei hit his head against the wooden headboard of the bed, maybe a little too hard. something clicked in his head, and it twisted his brain, and it suddenly hit him. how could he be so... reckless as to pick a fight with what seemed like a whole demon. but on second thought, lei remembered he had only seen the shadow monster twice before it attacked, and came to the conclusion that it wasn't his fault. upon this realisation, lei's face bloomed a deep red, relieved but yet embarrassed.
indent"anyways! would you think it's possible to take off this... double vision? i think i've seen enough." lei tried for a smile, which probably looked more like a grimace, which also would've fit lei. he'd always assumed that what he'd seen was all going to be harmless, and the monsters were nonexistent. he hadn't realised that even in the fantasy world, there would be discord amongst the creatures, and lei wanted no part of said discord. the only plausible fix to this in his naive eyes was to get rid of it completely.

loved ones. xxxx
Fill...my heart with song....
..and let me sing... for ever more.....
xxxxYUQING closed his eyes, holding his forehead on the cold stone wall of the hotel shower. The water above him pouring down, trickling along with his wet hair into his eyes - obstructing his nose from breathing the air that he so desires. Suffocating, but he did not want to - nor had the strength to - leave.
xxxxFinally, after sensing movement in the hotel room, he opened his eyes.
xxxxYuqing stared in a daze, seeming a little confused, before tilting his head and glancing towards the bathroom door. He let out a small sigh, slightly opening his mouth, feeling the oxygen fighting to enter his system.
xxxxTurning off the water, he stepped out of the shower after running his hair back with his fingers, grabbing the towel from the wall. Wrapping the towel around his waist, he discovered that he left his clothes outside in the room.
xxxxdamnit.
xxxxYuqing's brows furrowed slightly, seriously considering hanging out in the warm bathroom for a bit longer. Without a glance of the other boy, he headed directly for his clothes, not wanting to stand the feeling of humid coldness any longer. As he grabbed his clothes, he heard the boy behind him say something. He turned his head a bit, sparing a glance at the boy through his wet bangs out of the corner of his eye - raising his eyebrow slightly before turning back and pulling his shirt over his head.
xxxxJust as he was going back into the bathroom to dress completely, he heard the boy ask something. Without stopping his tracks, Yuqing responded. "I healed it already. It's not going to affect you in the long run." However, before he stepped into the bathroom, the boy emitted another question. This time, Yuqing paused and spun around to face the boy, giving him a good look-over for the first time.
xxxxIn the dark atmosphere of the hotel room, the boy like a fine jadeite sculpture. Jadite is different from soft jade. Its beauty intricate and delicate - yet holds an aura that you can not ignore. A powerful, strong feeling - as if born to be royal.
All I worship ... and adore
xxxxYuqing looked at him for a while, not inquisitively; nor challengingly - his eyes were meeting the boy's hopeful ones as if assessing something within them.
xxxxHe somehow knew what was going to happen - they both knew. Somewhere in their subconscious, the sound of destination clicked softly, chiming deep within themselves. The moment his eyes met the boy's gaze, a string in his brain tugged. It was like a lock that had lost its key, finally embracing its counterpart after many years.
xxxxYuqing went into a daze again for a second but recovered quickly to his ordinary self, shaking off the weird, subtle feeling that buried deep within his sea of memory and thoughts.
xxxx"Oh? " Putting on a smile, Yuqing approached the bed. "What do you want me to do?"
xxxxThe boy seemed a little nervous - his eyes alertly following Yuqing's movements. After noticing this, his dark eyes flashed in the dim lamplight, smiling even brighter.
xxxxHe shook his head, chuckling slightly. Come on - I'm not THAT suspicious.
xxxxYuqing looked down at the boy, and seeing he avoided eye contact, he laughed, reaching out and tilting his chin up to face him.
xxxx"What do you want me to do?" he repeated, his eyes waning into shining crescents. The boy seemed startled, crawling backward, trying to get as far away from Yuqing as possible. Alas, the hotel bed is only so big. As the boy backed up to the headboard, Yuqing had the boy trapped in a makeshift cage - an arm on either side of the boy's head, preventing him from escaping further. His eyelashes fluttered - their heads were so close they were almost touching, the feeling of the boy's hot, jagged breath distinct against his own.
xxxxThe boy was shocked, but that shocked state did not last long. He heard the boy repeat the question, following up with a ton of others, causing Yuqing to purse his lips slightly. Just as the boy was going to ask more, Yuqing let go of his position, freeing the boy from his arms. He sat straight on the edge of the bed, his face squeezing like a lemon as he stretched his sore back.
xxxxLetting out a satisfied grunt as he heard his back crack, Yuqing bounced up, patting off the non-existent dust on his pants - before remembering that he was not wearing any. His eyebrows furrowed slightly, seeming a bit confused, before nonchalantly tightening and pulling up his towel in one smooth motion.
xxxxHe picked up his clothes off the nightstand, heading towards the bathroom again. Yuqing did not make it this time either, as the boy finally snapped, desperate.
xxxx"You have to know some answers! I know what you can do! You got rid of that monster so easily - you have to know something!" The boy yelled after Yuqing's back. Yuqing didn't respond, only letting out a small chuckle before resuming his pace. The boy, frustrated to the maximum, snapped at him just as he closed the door. "So you're a coward? Is that what this is? I bet it's not that you can't - it's that you are scared?"
xxxxBehind the door, Yuqing's face shone in disbelief and confusion. What is the kid even saying? Did he not just save his life? Did they even know each other?
xxxx"Little entitled bastard." He mumbled, nose wrinkling in mild disgust, disdain evident in his eyes that he does not need to hide in the private space. Dressing completely, Yuqing sighed, carelessly combing his bangs back with his fingers. However much he didn't want to, he knew that he couldn't just leave the boy. The ghoul marked the boy before Yuqing got there, meaning it could come back any time. Plus, the boy could see through the sight barriers that obstructed normal humans from seeing the supernatural. He had to take him back to get checked in headquarters, as he could be an unregistered devil.
xxxxGrabbing his backpack and jacket from the musty hotel closet, Yuqing looked back at the boy out of the corner of his eye.
xxxx"I can't help you, but i'll take you to a place. As for your other questions, you can ask them when you're there." He turned his head completely, looking at the boy with a smile on his face.
xxxx"Before that, I need to take care of something first."
xxxxYuqing stood outside the building, one hand on his hip and one trying to block the bright sun rays that burned from overhead. The city museum was huge, stretching across almost two entire streets, it's white grey stone walls and pillars gleaning in the sunlight - making it look less like a museum, instead but a palace. Yuqing frowned, his dark eyebrows knitting together.
xxxx"Something's not right..." He mumbled under his breath, half-closing his eyelids. A second later, he opened them again. Something was not right. One high-level warding talisman should be enough to protect a regular building from mid-level ghouls ever entering- yet he detected that the museum's front entrance embedded at least twenty or so of these talismans in the door and pillars. What would a city museum hold that would need such elaborate protection? Secondly, Yuqing had made a makeshift mark on the shadow-morpher the night before, allowing him to be able to trace where it goes. Yuqing can still detect it's eery presence through his energy field, meaning that the ghoul and the taken citizens must be in the museum. However, the talismans were still fully intact and valid - no one has attempted to break in, nor have they been altered. Entering the museum for a ghoul at the level of the shadow-morpher is already nearly impossible, and at the same time, it had to bring the many captured citizens inside with it. How did it do it without triggering any of the talismans?
xxxxSuddenly, Yuqing looked up from his thoughts, a sharp gleam in his eyes. Of course the talismans would not activate- the shadow-morpher would not get warded by them, as it never entered the museum in the first place.
xxxxClosing his eyes and concentrating, Yuqing brought his hands in front of him before pushing them upwards at the sky. Abruptly, an invisible force seemed to scatter and plant in all four corners of the museum. Whispering something under his breath, Yuqing quickly drew a talisman in front of him with his middle and index finger before opening his eyes.
xxxxThe museum was the same as before, with its stone grey walls and majestic look. However, the feeling completely changed, as it now radiated dangerous energy from the inside out - and without checking, Yuqing knows that it's entrance embedded no talismans.
xxxx"I knew that the old man wouldn't let me off easy with a normal mission." He grinned, glints of emotions flashing through his dark eyes too fast to catch.
xxxxYuqing looked at the stunned boy beside him and ruffled his hair, layering an invisible protection layer over the boy in the process.
xxxx"These will help you protect yourself." Yuqing addressed, reaching up and producing a stack of talismans from thin air. Seeing that he did not take them immediately, he folded the stack in half before stuffing them the boy's pocket before walking towards the entrance. Looking back, he winked, flashing a bright, warm smile. "It's quite dangerous here- make sure to stay close to me at all times."
xxxxYuqing chuckled, his eyes shining through his untamed bangs as he pulled open the door, the thick black energy rolling out like an uncontrollable tsunami.
xxxx"Let's go to work~"

CAI "LEI" LANLEI !
𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 𝐌𝐄 𝐈𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏 𝐌𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐌𝐘 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃
slow motion by florindentSOMETIMES lei felt as if he'd needed an adventure in his life, something to make himself an outstanding member of society, but in the very moment, he realised it was just a naive dream. some things were better left as one, anyways.
indentthe faucet in the other room seemed to stop, and a squeak of the shower handle stopped the flow of the water. lei waited patiently on the bed, nervously trying to figure out what he'd say and what he'd do. minutes passed and nothing came to mind, just the click of a clock on the night stand and lei's rings occasionally clinking against each other as he fiddled with them. the male started to get worried, as if the person in the other room suddenly became unconscious, but he patiently waited.
indentsaid stranger seemed confused, confused at his questions, confused at his mere existence.
indent"thanks for that, then," he replied. the other seemed to know more than lei did about the world they could see and... perhaps everything about it, judging from his ability to heal the broken rib. the man touched the cloth over his healed rib, feeling the completeness. so he asked the other his second question.
indenthis eyes seemed to search lei, dark eyes judging his soul from right to wrong. "well? don't just stare." lei scoffed, arms crossed.
indentthen it went downhill. the stranger maintained lei's eye contact, shifting closer to lei until the space between them became so small that the smaller felt uncomfortable if he didn't scoot backwards in the large bed. his words seemed to taunt lei, a dangerous question that lei took as rhetorical. his own eyes darted away from the other's and he felt himself cracking into two pieces again.
indentstrange-man-who-saved-lei's-life backed up after a few moments, allowing lei to properly breathe. if he'd sat there for longer, the male was sure to have kicked him in the face or died from lack of oxygen. the other asked the same question again, and lei realised it wasn't rhetorical at all, a maybe-genuine-maybe-amused question. "just take me to someone who can fix this." lei paused. "or if you could just fix it here that would be fine." he shrugged. "or wait, just take me to your boss," he said.
indentthe other seemed to turn a deaf ear, or just flat out ignore lei, which in turn pissed him off. "come on, you have to know at least some answers. you can get rid of a monster. you can at least answer my question!" he snapped, barely surprised at his own words.
indentyet again, lei was met with the other's back turned away and this time lei knew he was just being an nuance about the whole situation. "so— you're just a coward huh? that's how you're going to act? i bet— no i know you can do this. you're really just scared, huh?" lei sneered, the bitter words flying from his mouth. the door shut on him.
indentlei suddenly felt... ashamed, almost for the way he'd lashed out at the other for not being able to help lei— which in fact, he might not be able to. in any case, the stranger didn't owe lei anything ( lei was the one who was in debt ) and he'd might as well apologise to him. without much thought, lei slid off of the bed, still unsure where any of his belongings were— his phone was probably broken and discarded, but his wallet was still in his pocket, the leather a little blood soaked, but the contents of it were fine.
indentby the time lei was about to leave, life-saving-stranger appeared again, a wane smile on his face. "thank you... i guess i owe you quite a bit now." lei weakly smiled back. the two left the old hotel, lei making a mental note not to ever follow strangers after this whole ordeal was over.
indentthe museum they stood in front of was extremely familiar to lei, he'd been there for university before, but he'd never seem such evil energy exuding from it. perhaps lei had, but he'd just blocked it out. such things weren't pretty in his eyes.
indentthe taller handed a stack of yellowed papers in front of lei, and for a moment, just a moment, he saw a glimpse of something in his eyes, a memory, something for him to grasp for. a lady— who's eyes were the same as lei's— his mother, perhaps, and a man next to her. they held a paper charm, the strokes
indenta forced shove of the talismans jolted lei back to his reality and for a moment, he wanted to snap at the stranger again for interrupting the memory, but it wouldn't help either of them anyways. he stayed quiet.
indentas the doors opened, lei saw yet another monster. the spirit beckoned the duo to come closer, an invitation to become one of them. it was the building, a morphing creature, he realised. it was almost a mirage, something so unreal, but the world as he knew it had already turned upside down on its head. lei clenched the tips of the paper talisman in his hand, tracing the intricate words written. he didn't know what they meant, but he knew that they were to protect him from evils. how he knew this? lei wasn't sure himself, but it felt like instinct, instinct to hold onto the talismans for dear life.
indentlei tried not to crumple the talismans in his hands, knowing they were probably created with care, but the anxiety in his chest bundled together, making him feel weak and ill at ease. the feeling of vulnerability in his chest almost never bothered lei simply because it was never there, but in the moment it made him feel even more uncomfortable before.
indentthe male felt claustrophobic, almost bumping into the stranger's back multiple times as the two walked together inside the museum. lei felt extremely out of place, creeping around the museum during closed hours with a stranger he'd met only a few hours ago. however, these feelings dissipated with the yellowed paper in his hand, reminding him that he would be safe.
indentthe two walked in silence towards the the dark aura in the museum. soon the energy became more and more apparent, starker and starker against the pale marble columns. the silence didn't bother lei, but it definitely made the museum seem twenty times more eerie with their quiet footsteps echoing throughout the whole place.
indentsoon they came face to face with the shadowy creature and lei felt almost terrified of it. "holy crap— is that its core?" he hissed, eyes turning to the taller man. it seemed to turn towards them, suddenly noticing their presence. if the other said anything, lei didn't hear it. the other signalled for the shorter to stand back, probably not to get into the crossfire of the shadow and the stranger.
indenthe wasn't sure what lifesaver-stranger was about to do, but lei knew he was powerful— his energy overflowed from his core and into the dark abyss. the male stood behind a marble pillar, head turned to see how the other would get rid of the monster.
