As the small team made their way down the road, she would occasionally catch glimpses of Haruto weaving in between people, but Jinpa had to glance over her shoulder from time to time to make sure Mako could still see them. Jinpa knew she didn't need to worry about him. He was a talented bender, a hard worker and had good enough sense to handle himself. Though, that didn't stop her from looking back several more times to pick out his face, his hair, or his clothes in the sea of people behind her. For some reason, the reassurance that he was still there, made her smile and helped calm her excited nerves. Haruto caught her eyes a few minutes later and she glanced over towards a tall, dead tree. It was clear that Haruto wanted to investigate. She nodded and angled towards the tree, resisting the urge to look back towards Mako. Taking advantage of the emptier pathways, Jinpa picked up the pace a little bit to a light jog. They were less than a block away from the tree when Jinpa slowed her pace. There was almost no one around which meant they had more room to work and fewer eyes watching them, but the airbender also knew that that meant they would be easier to see. All of a sudden, she felt very obvious in her clothing and with her staff.
The tree was large, taller than her (not that impressive), but the most striking thing about it was its bare branches and brittle bark. Why would plant life not bloom? Judging by the other plants and greenery they had seen, it was an isolated incident. Just the one tree, which made this all the more strange. They were losing the last remnants of sunlight and Jinpa glanced over to Mako with a puzzled expression and then met Haruto's gaze. "Why is it dead? Nothing else around here seems to have a hard time growing and blossoming."
