He pulled the book out again and got on his computer, checking his messages. Nothing new. The book took its place on the shelf once more, and he got a drink of water from downstairs. His mother was at the stove, cooking something. “Hey, Mom. I was thinking, how can you hate someone you’ve never met? We should all go out for coffee. Blame me for that B, Mom, not her. I let myself get distracted.” She nodded. “And that girl was the distraction. But, your grades haven’t dropped since then. So let’s have some coffee together, fine. I’ll talk to your father and convince him.” He smiled. “Really?” She laughed softly. “You make a good point.”
