Luci gave him the smallest smile when he watched him grasp the phone number with a shaky hand. He guessed that Evan did not receive such kindness often. It saddened Luci in a way. He chuckled when Evan seemed too eager. "Just send me a message whenever you get the chance so that I may have your number on my phone as well." He responded as he looked at him. He picked up his spellbook and left the coffee shop as well, turning and heading back to his own place of work.

Evan rushed his way home from the coffee shop that day, a little more of a spring in his step than usual, phone feeling just a little too heavy in his jacket pocket. By the time he got home it was pretty much all he could think about, and, pushing aside worries that he might look at all too desperate, he brought up Luci's number the moment he was settled back in his little apartment and tapped out a quick text, just a small: hello.
Pushing the phone aside, he sat down onto his sofa, finding his cat curled up closely by his side, and closed his eyes for just a moment, relaxing for the first time in a while.

Luci yawned as he walked down the stairs into his workplace in the funeral home. He worked in the basement as it was colder and had enough space for his office and workspaces as a mortician. He pulled out his files and folders and placed them on the table. He put his lab coat and tied his hair back just in time for his phone to ding, indicating he had a message. He looked down at it and smiled.

Hello, this is Evan I presume?

yes, hello

Evan sent back the quick text with a smile, having moved up by now to pace the apartment, and a hand absent-mindedly resting on the leaves of a plant of his windowsill, gently easing life back into the yellowing edges of it. The plants were easy for him to understand, simple and humble, the perfect companions, every inch of his apartment filled with them, paths left between gathered plant pots for him and the cat to traverse their way between the rooms. He watched the cat slip her way towards the kitchen for a moment as his fingers lingered on the keyboard of his phone, thinking of any words to say. Finding none, he pulled his sketchbook out from his bag instead and pulled out a loose leaf of paper from between the pages, smoothing it out over the table to look at the loose sketches on it. Plants were easier than human interaction, and so he watched them carefully, hoping Luci would know what to say instead.

Luci smiled at the simple response Evan sent back to him. He paced his workplace a little bit as he tried to think of what to respond back to him, overthinking. He wanted to send him the perfect reply yet the perfect reply did not come easy to him at this point. He didn't know why he was so nervous, Evan was just a stranger after all. He turned back to his phone with a soft sigh and picked it up again, the metal cold to the touch.

"What are you up to?"

He groaned as that sounded lame but he sent it to Evan anyways. It was better than nothing after all, or just sending something more stupid or heaven forbid just a simple little emoji. He sat back down at his desk, waiting for his response.
