- indenthe didn't say anything to her whisper, hearing only a sliver of it. was this life so cruel that nobody wanted to stay? that unless you're the top dog, you'll never truly feel like anything will go your way? "i think i will," he responded. he was silent for a few more moments before he spoke again. "no man should live like this. no sane person should." perhaps he was hypocritical, spitting on the mob life when he's been involved for so long, but there's a certain moment in time when you begin to realize things about your life and this was anthony's moment. no sane person should want to live this way. "there's the fame from the media, fortune from the crimes, lovers who'll be glad to jump into your arms but it all comes at this heavy price that, sooner or later, catches up to you." this was the type of life where, once you're in, it's extremely hard to get out of. some never do; they can't find a way out. some know no different than the life of crime. some don't get the option, like his cousin, who was born a heir and expected to take over the empire his father created. but romeo didn't think the same way anthony did. he knew his cousin liked the power associated with being a mob boss, the power of having hundreds if not thousands of individuals at your control. romeo could kill anyone he wanted, get anything he wanted, buy anything he wanted and he liked that. anthony has known him since they were children; he knew how he worked. it annoyed him when he spat on other mob bosses like richie alonso for their brutal ways when in reality, he was no different. he knew how upset his cousin had been when hosea went behind his back and ordered the execution of his old capo roberto and his family but romeo has slaughtered families like sheep before who threatened the bianchi family so why was that different? had it been anger because hosea simply went behind his back and he didn't like subordination? it didn't make sense. romeo acted like his father in so many ways that anthony hoped he wouldn't turn out to be a carbon copy so he didn't inherit that damn crazy gene. but anthony supposed he couldn't talk because he's also done horrible things that no man should do and still sleep soundly at night.
