Santiago might look human when he puts his mind to it, but when he was first summoned he was a cat--a witch's familiar to be exact. Having materialized in the world fully formed with no memory of what came before he can be somewhat naive, even though he appears to be in his mid-twenties. He's only been on this plane of existence for about five years. If questioned about his origin he will likely change the subject, as that's not something even he understands. He's pretty sure that he is derived from the fae, owing this to legends of feline shape shifters, but it seems like the myths got it mostly wrong. He's relatively confident he can't steal souls, at least. What he is sure of is that it takes more work to look human, so he usually avoids it. Cats have all the best fun, anyway.

While he is capable of changing his human appearance to some degree, he finds it simpler to choose the same form each time he transforms: a generally unassuming man (only 5'7" and not overly muscular) of indeterminate race, with freckled cheeks and a scar across his face--the one thing he definitely can't change, a souvenir of something he can't remember that stays with him in both forms. His vision is that of a cat's even when he is human, making him overly sensitive to bright lights and farsighted, with deficiencies in his color vision. The easiest color for him to see is blue, which is why he chooses that hair color.

Sameer Bryant, the powerful witch who summoned him, uses him as a focus for his work. It's not terribly interesting from Santiago's end, but it clearly increases the witch's power and influence. He's more cunning than he lets on, and he has heard much about his master's rival, Blaise, which is to say he hates the man. His life is fine, and he figures he might as well continue on eating fresh fish and lazying about while the getting is good.
