      ─── ( reggie bakewell

every single morning felt like an entire odyssey. reggie wanted out, and he needed out badly. every single day he had to deal with the annoyances a couple of folks dropped onto him, more specifically, the locksmiths. when reggie first came to the wayward sons, he had a couple of run-ins with them. for no particular reason, they felt like he had don’t something wrong. of course, reggie can’t do no wrong! he’s the pacifist in every situation and story. perhaps it was the vintage key lock he had lost? and insisted he brought it back despite claiming he had misplaced them - oh! and too the same person too. reggie could only ever think about how much torment and wasted time they consumed. that was only the tip of the iceberg. it felt like everybody was out to get the poor guy. reggie would try his hardest to dig a way out of the hole he buried himself in; but his efforts only sunk him in deeper.

a loud groan rasped out of the young man’s lips, sunlight illuminated the room and warmed reggie’s skin to the touch. a loud bump ran up the corner of a wall, it’s the neighbor. reggie moaned in annoyance and proceeded to lift himself off the bed. a sense of dread balled in the pit of his stomach while reggie brushed his teeth. a second knock proceeded at the door; sending reggie out of his seat.

despite the irritating start of the day, reggie was determined to makes this one good; he was going to put aside the differences. reggie shoved his hands in the pockets of his pants and cowardly simpered his head. maybe this is it? a voice echoed through his mind; thoughts of escaping this hell camp sparked a chain reaction. not many civilians were out, this is perfect! lights were flickering on and off in some houses, the generators kicking in throughout the night to save resources could be heard in the distance along with a chorus of frogs and crickets. it was somewhat early in the dawn, not many were awake.

he should be up by now,” a loud, benevolent voice boomed. it almost sounded like a cartoon villain, obviously husk! reggie’s insides twisted with pity. pity for himself, that is! “speak of the devil.” a feminine voice murmured; he often felt like the weird one of the group. outcasted from everything, he was made a joke if it benefited the locksmiths. why must i go through this? reggie took every step with half of himself knowing something was bound to happen; just unsure of what exactly. he had heard rumors in the past about the group leaders: there were multiple. eugene jergens was the overseer, he ruled almost everything; trade, communications, military, everything. he allegedly had been outed for “illegal” trading with opposing groups, but reggie didn’t know what to believe. it didn’t matter when his life was endangered.

as the man turned around the brick corner, a pale but big arm suddenly swung out from the wall. he was suddenly immersed in the smell of another man; reggie caught a wiff of burnt wood. he knew exactly who it was.

cliff johnston murmured in reggie’s ear. he began to tug at cliff’s arm in distress, “reginald,” he could hear the saliva in the man’s mouth. “yes?” a small voice grumbled against the man’s arms, reggie wouldn’t lie, he had a strong grip on him. “if i see you one more time,” cliff paused, his voice was filled with annoyance. “yes?” reggie began to see stars. he couldn’t make out what the man was saying, his grip began to loosen on cliff’s arm. slowly losing oxygen. “you’ll be dead.

a suddenly gush of oxygen sent reggie off and on his feet once more, “you’re funny!” he said breathlessly, a couple of feet spaced away from cliff. cliff looked like he was about to roast the man alive. “bold of you to think that i’d actually want to stay here!” he howled, cliff lunged forward after him. reggie scraped the edges of his finger tips trying to recover from dodging him; zooming across the town square. left and right he was dodging everybody as if they were a nuisance to him. yelling exchanges were made, everybody was after him.

Ꮥeraphine was laying on her back atop the cot in her closet-sized bedroom, the heels of her bare feet propped up against the wall on one side of her with her ankles crossed over one another. Her bright red hair was sprawled out all around her like a web, and she stared up at the ceiling deep in thought. The safehaven had been very kind when they took her in and patched her up after a particularly bad encounter with the undead, but Seraphine had never intended for her stay in the little town to become permanent. You see, before she had been injured, Seraphine was looking for her family. She was living on campus at her college a few hours away from home when the undead had suddenly taken over. Her whole journey up until this point had been a search for her family. She had a mother, a father, and a little sister who were out there somewhere, undead or alive, and Seraphine would suffer until she could finally get some closure once she knew what had become of them. And if they had joined the ranks of the walking dead, Seraphine wanted to be the one to put them out of their misery.

The town here was very strict about who they let in and out of their settlement, understandably so considering the zombification disease was easily spread through contact. Not to mention they needed people to keep things running. The stronger and healthier the better. Seraphine just so happened to be in the age range most wanted because young adults her age were by far the most useful, especially when defending against a horde attack. Healthy, strong, and agile were the three most coveted traits in a person nowadays. Life in the town was nice and all, they didn't work her too hard, but it wasn't by any means a life Seraphine was happy to be living, especially without knowing where her parents and sister were. Maybe if she found them dead or killed them herself, she might come back to one of these groups and stay just for the sake of safety and survival. As long as there was a chance her family was still alive and healthy, Seraphine would always have an urge to go out and search for them. If she found them safe, maybe she could even bring them back here.. that is, if they were to let her back in, which would be unlikely if she actually escaped from the town sometime soon. She would probably have to find a different group, or perhaps even establish one of her own.

She was trying to figure out the best time to leave. She figured she could get out through the main gate if she was fast enough, if she tricked a guard, or if she just bribed or convinced them somehow to let her pass. She just had to figure out when the biggest pushovers would be tasked with guarding the gates so she would have the best chance of being able to leave. Seraphine had already prepared a camping backpack of supplies and weapons and kept it stashed beneath her bed. She was ready to go at a moments notice, if the right time were to arise. For now though, it would be best to blend in and continue about her days as usual. Sliding her feet down from the wall, Seraphine rose up from her bed and rubbed the back of her head with a yawn. Reaching out both arms, she stretched for a moment and headed to the dresser, pulling open the top drawer and fumbling around the small collection of clothing to find something cleaner to wear. She dressed herself in plain blue jeans and a white t-shirt with some kind of faded text across the front, slipping on her worn out sneakers and heading out the door. Seraphine always went to get her sets of rations when she woke up each day, so she made her way to the dining building for her "breakfast".
