indentThe young woman had been helping around the camp, impatiently brushing her long, chestnut brown hair behind her ears whenever it got in the way of what she was doing, all the while keeping careful watch of her younger brother, Kavi. Somehow, her brother had caught the eye of a Grounder, Locryn─and if she didn’t keep an eye on him, who knows what kind of trouble he could get into. Since their mother sacrificed herself on the Ark so Kavi could take her place, she’s been incredibly protective of him. The last thing she, or he needed, was to be involved with a Grounder, no matter if there is currently peace between them or not. Besides, when they had first landed on the ground it was the Grounders who had tried to kill them.
indentSatisfied with her work of fortifying the wall around the camp which housed the survivors of the Ark─or, the Sky People/Skairu as the Grounders called them─she stepped back, wiping her hands on her pants, glancing over the camp and searching for Kavi. He was an adult, yes, as was she, but she cared about him and don’t want him to get hurt. ”Have you seen Kavi?” She asks her friend Tallie, who had been working beside her. The blonde shook her head. “No, but the last time I saw him he went into the forest.” Great. With an exasperated sigh Ajay put away her tools before heading out of the camp to search for her brother, hoping he hadn’t gotten himself into a mess or gotten hurt.
indentThe leaves and branches scattered around the forest floor crackled underfoot as she walked, calling Kavi’s name ever so often. She wouldn't panic, not yet, anyway, as he was probably somewhere around here. He couldn’t have gone far, after all, and he probably wouldn’t anyways. It had been a few minutes of wandering through the forest when (not looking where she was going, as she was intent of finding her brother) she almost ran into someone, but was able to stop before she did.
indentLooking closer, she realized it was the Commander of the twelve Grounder clans─and, not to mention, they had history. The other woman is beautiful, one of the things she’d first noticed about her. And over time, Ajay had, admittedly fallen for her, and fallen hard. The two had acknowledged that there were in fact those feelings between them, but had decided against acting upon them. Clearing her throat Ajay wouldn’t meet Celeste’s eyes, instead looking anywhere but at the Commander.
indent”I’m sorry. I was just looking for my brother. Do you. . .do you have any idea where he might be?” She hoped it wasn’t awkward, as she quite liked the other female in general, apart from romantically.
indentHe’d fallen in love. And not with one of his own people. He couldn’t help it. The younger male had caught his eye to the point where he couldn’t stop thinking of him. From that point onward, they had had a habit of sneaking away from their people to meet by the river, and he’d gotten to know him well. He’d never admitted, or spoken about what he felt aloud. Because he’s a Grounder who had learned underneath Celeste as her second, the current Commander of the twelve clans. And Kavi is a Skairu who the clans have had problems with since they stepped on the ground, despite there being peace between them at the moment.
indentHe has, however, told the Commander. The two had become friends since he had become her second. But love is weakness, or so they’ve always believed. Still, Locryn could not help seeing him again, multiple times. Kavi is just someone he’s drawn to, because of his charisma, and how he’s so compassionate. Whenever he needed to think, or really needed just to see Kavi, he went to the river. It had become their spot, of sorts.
indentSo that’s where he was now, sitting at the edge of the blue water and watching the waves ripple across the surface, deep in thought. And he was thinking of telling him, once and for all. To keep it all held inside was something he didn’t like to do. It would only make it worse, really. When he heard someone approaching, he stood, turning to face them─it was Kavi. The sight of the other male sent warmth coursing through his veins.
indent”Kavi,” He says, extending a hand, palm upward, for him. ”There is something I think you should know.”

xxxpolis and most of the lands of the coalition had been peaceful lately. they had made peace with the sky people, for now. the only thing that wasn't sitting well with the commander at the moment was her former second's relationships with one of the sky people. celeste had told him time and time again that it wasn't safe to find love, especially at this time. the bond between the clans seemed strong but at any moment it could break and he would be forced to choose between his clan and the clan of his love. that was why she said that it was weak to love, it left you open to being manipulated and torn apart. that was why celeste didn't love. she saw what happened when warrior fell for each other. they loved for a period of time and then they were killed and extorted with that weakness in mind. their lovers would be tortured or killed and then the warriors could no longer fight on, they would submit like cowards. this was especially true with the commanders. heda krisa kom trikru, the commander who she had been second to, had been killed by her lover from azgeda, the commander before her had been shot with arrows after trying to rescue her lover. celeste could never let anything like that happen to her because she was the key the held the clans together. she had united them and she would have to struggle her whole life to keep them united.
xxx"heda." celeste jumped when a voice spoke to her. when she turned she saw it was just her flamekeeper. "what is it osiris?" she asked him. "it is time for the hunt, the ambassadors have arrived," he said before bowing to her and then walking out of her room. the commander had completely forgotten that there was suppose to be a hunt today. she had invited the ambassadors from each clan to go on a hunt with her near the territory of the sky people. she quickly changed into her robes, put on her face paint and the commander's cog in between her eyebrows. her hair was braided and her blade was stripped to her before slipping a quiver of arrows around her.
xxxthe ride to the forest was smooth and all of the ambassadors were anxious to start hunting. the commander dismounted from her mare and as soon as she did, one of the ambassadors warned, "heda! duan plan kom skaikru*." she looked and saw that the woman they were talking about was ajay. they had a relationship with each other at one time but decided to break it off. the commander raised her hand to show them she was no threat. "skaikru liak lukot**," celeste reminded them in a sure voice. the commander turned to ajay. "your brother? well ive been seeing a sky person hanging around my former second near the border river, i could be him," she said to ajay. "ill join you on your search," she said to the woman.
* "commander! that woman is from skycrew."
** "skycrew are friends."
xxxkavi had carried a bucket out of the gates of the camp, trying not draw attention to himself. he made it look like he was going out to fetch water from the near by river. he was going to the river, but not defiantly not to get water. he was going out to meet locryn. he knew his sister would be furious when he found out that kavi had snuck out of camp because she had warned him not to. she hated the idea of him being together with a grounder, even though they were in a time of peace. he rolled his eyes at her anger because he knew that his sister had fallen in love with the commander, who had quickly stopped the relationship because she thought love was weakness, blah blah blah. kavi didn't care about their relationship and he didnt care about grounder ideas on love, all he wanted was to be left alone and be allowed to love who he loved, not having to worry about what his sister or the commander thoughts about it. he hoped that they would just leave them be eventually.
xxxthe walk to the river was fairly short and easy and while he walked, he took a break for a moment to bend down by the river and dip his bucket into the water smooth water. he had to have some proof that this was the reason he had gone out. he pulled out his bucket and sat it down on the bank of the river. he would come back for the bucket later because he didn't really care to carry it anymore. kavi pulled his long hair up into a bun and continued to walk until he saw locryn sitting on the edge of the river. "locryn," he said back to the other man with a warm smile. he took his hand and helped him up. "and what it is it you want to tell me, love?" he asked with a grin. "please dont say something about the commander forbidding us for meeting or something," he joked.

indentThere was no doubt at all that she had loved Celeste greatly, or that they had loved each other deeply. Anyone, when they were together, would have been able to see that. So it was no surprise that Ajay had been heartbroken when they decided to separate and go down different paths. She hadn’t taken another lover since the day they parted, and focused mainly on her brother since then. So there was a part of her that understood why Kavi was seeing the Grounder, and in the way that he was, romantically. But the other part of her knew that he’d only get his heart broken if something were to happen between them, and she didn’t want that to happen, as she is his sister.
indentWhen Celeste said she’d help her find her brother, Ajay immediately brightened with relief. ”Thank you, Commander.” She says respectfully, as she figured it would be better to use her title rather than her name in front of the ambassadors, most likely whom were from the clans, accompanying her on the hunt. She gave a respectful, polite nod to the ambassadors as well, even if they appeared to distrust her. The two of them parted from the ambassadors, Ajay letting the other woman take the lead (as she would be the one to know her former second best). The walk was quiet apart from their footsteps, until Ajay broke the silence. ”Celeste, I know we. . .I know we decided to break off our relationship. But even if you believe that love is weakness. . .you were one of the best things that had ever happened to me.” Afterward she fell silent, hoping that her words hadn’t made things more awkward between the two.
indentA soft, affectionate smile crossed his usually stern, stoic features. Often, he dislikes letting his guard down, believing it would only hurt him if he did. But he was only ever able to do so in front of Kavi. His hands find the younger male’s waist, pulling him gently against him as he pressed a kiss to his forehead, his cheeks. ”No, it’s nothing like that.” He murmurs in between kisses, fondly. ”It’s just that I wanted to remind you how much I love you.” Leaning back to look at him, one hand moves from Kavi’s waist to his cheek, thumb lightly brushing against his cheekbone. ”You are the love of my life.” He leans forward again, lightly pecking the tip of his nose, before smiling sweetly at him.
indentCeleste has taught him a multitude of things as her second. One, that love was weakness. It was no secret that the Commander had been in a long-lasting relationship with a Skairu─Kavi’s sibling, Ajay, in fact. Their love had run fast and deep. They had been inseparable. When they parted Celeste had never taken another lover, but taken strength in the idea that love only weakened you. However, falling so madly in love with Kavi had indeed changed Locryn’s views on love. He didn’t really agree with Celeste as much anymore, believing love to be powerful and true. Believing the love he felt for Kavi is powerful and great and strengthening, not weakening. He had a purpose apart from the clans─and that purpose is Kavi.
